21、Some hearing loss is a common — and nearly unavoidable — effect of aging. A third of people aged 60 and older have lost some of their ability to hear.
But some research suggests a habit that might help offset the effect of aging on hearing. A study found that among middle-aged adults, being a lifelong musician was connected with better hearing later in life.
“The instrument you play does not seem to be important here,” says Nina Kraus, a biologist. “It is really the act of engagement playing the instrument that matters.”
Participants in the study were between ages 45 and 65. Researchers tested 18 musicians who had been playing an instrument since age nine or younger, and 19 non-musicians who had less than three years of music training.
The musicians had statistically better auditory memory scores and tested better at hearing speech in noisy environments. They also showed better auditory processing abilities, which relate to how people interpret speech sounds.
However, the two groups tied when researchers tested visual working memory skills. “It isn’t as though musical training has a volume knob effect that makes all kinds of sensory processing enhanced in the same manner,” Kraus says. “It focuses on auditory skill.”
The latest findings follow earlier research from Kraus that showed musician in a younger age group had better hearing skills. At the same time, some research has shown that musicians who play in large ensembles (合奏) may face an occupational risk when it comes to their hearing.
Does this effect apply to the guy who plays in a community band one night a week? Kraus says no. To be included in the study, musicians were required to have engaged in musical activities-practicing, teaching or performing-at least three times a week.
“What we do with our time and how we engage our senses and our thinking seems to really shape the people we become in very basic ways — in ways that affect how our series work,” she says.
And, Kraus says, a person doesn’t need to be an Itzhak Perlman or a Yo-Yo Ma to experience the effects. Talent, she says, isn’t a factor.
Kraus says that more research needs to be done to see whether receiving music instruction later in life might have the same benefits.

22、When you want advice to achieve something, whom would you rather ask: the top performer in that area or someone barely getting by? Most people would choose the top performer. That person’s advice, however, may not be any more helpful.
“Skillful performance and skillful teaching are not always the same thing, so we shouldn’t expect the best performers to necessarily be the best teachers as well,” said David Levari (Harvard Business School), lead author of a recent Psychological Science article.
Across four studies, he and co-authors found that top performers don’t give better advice than other performers, at least in some domains(领域). Rather, they just give more of it. “Our studies suggest that at least in some instances, people may overvalue advice from top performers,” the researchers wrote.
“In our experiments, people given advice by top performers thought that it helped them more, even though it usually didn’t. Surprisingly, they thought so even though they didn't know anything about the people who wrote their advice,” said Levari. “Top performers didn’t write more helpful advice, but they did write more of it, and people in our experiments mistook quantity for quality,” Levari added.
So, why wasn’t the advice more helpful? Levari and colleagues have a few ideas. First, skilled performers may overlook fundamental advice because natural talent and extensive practice have made conscious thought unnecessary. Second, top performers may not be skilled communicators. Even when an excellent performer does have explicit information to share, they may not be especially good at sharing it. Finally, a large quantity of advice may be more than what can realistically be carried out.
“We spend a lot of time and money looking for good advice, whether from coworkers and coaches, teachers and tutors, or friends and family,” said Levari. “The next time you get advice, you should think less about how much of it there was, and more about how much of it you could actually use.”

23、Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, once told a story of a hummingbird. When a forest fire breaks out, a hummingbird will volunteer to do its best to fight the fire despite its small size and little impact, while larger animals like the elephants just sit by and watch. In many Kenyan people’s eyes, the youth group Komb Green Solutions is such a hummingbird.
Formed in 2017, Komb Green Solutions is a community-based organization in Nairobi. Though it started off with no support at all, it was armed with a passion to change the environment in their slum (贫民窟).
Fredrick Okinda, the group’s founder, said that before the group was formed, some young people in Korogocho were engaged in crime to earn a living. This always resulted in gang fights, with Okinda having lost many friends to crime.
During an upgrading project where a new bridge linking Dandora and Korogocho slums was being built, Okinda and his co-founders saw an opportunity. Having worked as casual laborers and security officers for the project, the youth decided to carry on by restoring the river under the bridge on a voluntary basis.
“When we started, our main focus was the dumpsite (垃圾场) under the bridge,” Okinda said. “It was a hiding place for thieves and a place where drug dealers and users would go to conduct their illegal activities, so we wanted to create a green and safe space for children to play and for young people to relax.”
With limited resources, lack of funds and an enormous task, Komb Green Solutions has slowly but surely started turning the city’s Korogocho slum from an eyesore into a safe space where children can play and adults can live healthy lives.
