21、 On 29 May, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and his guide, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, claimed their place in the history books. The pair succeeded in reaching the top of the 8,850-metre Mount Everest at 11:30 am for the first time in history.
Years later, they recalled(回忆),“At this altitude, the air is thin and the lack of oxygen makes every step taxing. The temperature is a pleasant 20^C in the sunshine but can be 15 degrees cooler in the shade. On a clear night, lows of- 6C are common, and even in late May snowfall sometimes occurs.
“To simulate(模拟) high-altitude conditions in order to give the body a head start before climbing the mountain, we rented an altitude tent for our home- a clear plastic frame connected to a machine that would reduce the amount of oxygen inside. Sleeping in this tent for two weeks helps the body to produce more red blood cells, which help send more blood to the body and increase our strength. We also adjusted our diet to include more pumpkin seeds for iron and vitamin B-both red blood cell-promoting nutrients," recalled Sir Edmund Hillary.
Two weeks later, they began climbing Everest. “Two thirds into the race, we hit a wall. Even with a small gradual progress, we suffered from severe altitude sickness. We were worried we would have passed out. We felt really down," he said during an interview.
“Both Tenzing and I thought that once we'd climbed the mountain, it was unlikely anyone would ever make another attempt," Sir Edmund said years later.“We couldn't have been more wrong. Each year, hundreds of people from around the world apply for climbing permits from Nepal's Ministry of Tourism, and hundreds more participate in one of the most challenging races on the planet: the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, which was first held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their historic adventure and is held annually on 29 May,

22、The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem (生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat (栖息地).
It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

【4】The passage is developed mainly by______.

23、Free Museums in London
With free museums, families can visit more than once. For big museums, e.g. British Museum, don’t try to see everything in one go. First visit, take a couple of hours to explore with kids, get familiar with the museum layout, and then return another day to see another part of the museum.
British Museum
The British Museum has on display fabulous goodies from the ancient world—Assyria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, plus prehistoric Europe. The “biggies” from ancient Greece are Parthenon sculptures—marble of horsemen, musicians, animals, elders, Greek gods. Don’t miss Assyrian reliefs and winged bulls, Sutton Hoo treasure with golden helmets and swords of 7th century Anglo-Saxon kings, and Egyptian mummies and colossal statues.
Science Museum
Explore galleries chock full of British airplanes, lunar spacecraft and full-size rockets, and early 19th century steam locomotives(车头) built in England—Stephenson’s Rocket and Puffing Billy. Little kids will have fun with water play and hands-on activities in the Garden. Movies in IMAX theater, flight simulators, and special exhibitions have fees.
National Galley
In the National Galley, kids will see famous paintings from all over Europe—Sunflowers by Van Gogh, The Virgin of the Rocks by Leonardo da Vinci, works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Raphael, Botticelli, Velasquez, French Impressionists. Also look for paintings by British artists—Thomas Gainsborough (super family portraits), J.M.W. Turner, George Stubbs (famous for his horse paintings).
Natural History Museum
The British are famous for their nature explorers—Charles Darwin, David Livingstone, Robert Scott, Captain Cook. This is a wide-ranging museum of the natural world including gold nuggets from Australia, emeralds, meteorites, fossils from Britain, extinct birds such as the dodo bird and saber-tooth cat, and large dinosaur gallery.
