21、The story of the most sustainable pair of jeans is also the story of a family whose members have dedicated their lives to denim innovation. It is the great-great-grandson of the family business founder who has brought Candiani and whole fashion industry to new heights by creating the first fully biodegradable stretch denim.
Alberto Candiani, the current owner of Candiani, created the first fully biodegradable jeans using a plant-based yarn obtained from natural rubber. Once the innovative denim came to life, a brand new pair of jeans was put to the test by being buried in forest land for six months. At the end of that period, Candiani’s team discovered the fibers had almost fully broken down. The new technology is called Coreva. “These garments are extremely durable, but at the end of their life, you could send them back to us and we recycle them, or you could fertilize your vegetables with them,” Alberto Candiani said.
Jeans generate an environmental impact that has become a real global challenge. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, it takes around 2000 gallons of water to make a typical pair of jeans. And during production, around 71 pounds of carbon dioxide are released. What’s more, most jeans are manufactured with stretch denim made with plastic, which can take hundreds of years to degrade.
But by creating a circular model in which fabrics are biodegradable at the end of their lifecycle, tons of garments can be prevented from ending up in landfills. Candiani has not only achieved this by going plastic-free, but the manufacturer has also reduced water use by 75 percent and the use of chemicals by 65 percent. Although Candiani creates a product that is about double the price of traditional denim due to the higher labor and more manufacturing costs involved, business is booming. Not only has the company tripled its production, but its motto of “the greenest mill in the blue world” is credible.

22、When I read that we spend almost three hours every day checking our smartphones, I was shocked. What was I missing in the real world when walking down the street, lost in a virtual world of social media updates and videos of dogs on bicycles? I promised myself I would use my smartphone less, but it didn’t happen. Then one day my phone died and I had to wait a week for a new one.【1】I thought it would be hard, but in fact it was quite easy—and surprising in a good way for a number of reasons!
The first consequence was quite amazing—On the first day in the office without my phone, I was thinking more deeply and concentrating more. I rediscovered my brain!【2】Another consequence was that I actually talked to people more and felt more connected to them. I realized I was being more responsive to their news and sympathetic to their problems because I wasn’t constantly checking my phone. 【3】Their kindness made me feel welcome, and I discovered my brain has very good GPS!
At the very beginning, I was worried that I would be bored without my phone, but actually I enjoyed it—I’d forgotten how much I love books and newspapers.【4】And I also sensed that I slept so much better and felt more awake in the morning.
At times it was inconvenient to have no mobile internet connection, but all in all, there were a lot of benefits from not being connected 24/7. So, if you think you use your smartphone too much, put it away for a few days and see what happens.【5】

23、 Staying up late doing homework is always tiring. And perhaps when we become tired, we feel the need to eat unhealthy snack food. Recently scientists have been investigating tiredness and snack food.
According to a study in The Journal of Neuroscience, people are more likely to take snacks when they don't get enough sleep.
For the study, researchers from University of Cologne in Germany gave the same dinner to 32 healthy men aged between 19 and 33. Half of the men were then sent home to bed, and the other half were kept awake in the laboratory all night.
The next morning, the participants were asked to consider how much they would be willing to pay for snack food items shown to them in pictures.
According to the researchers, all were similarly hungry in the morning, and had similar levels of most hormones(荷尔蒙)and blood sugar.
However, brain scans showed that when the sleep-deprived(缺少睡眠的)participants looked at the pictures of junk food, they released more of the "hunger hormone". This is the hormone responsible for increasing the appetite, and making us consume more.
Asked about how much they would pay for snacks, "Participants with sleep deprivation were more willing to overspend on food items than those with a good night's sleep," researchers told Science Daily.
Researchers also observed that among the people who hadn't slept, there was greater activity in the part of the brain where food rewards are processed.
The scientists think that sleep-deprived people experience changes to the hunger hormone and the brain's reward system that then leads to a stronger desire to eat snacks with high fat and calories.
"This brings us a little closer to understanding the mechanism(机制)behind how sleep deprivation changes food valuation," Professor Jan Peters, a co-author of the study from the University of Cologne, told The Independent.
Some tips on this:
* Listen to some soft music to relieve your tiredness.
* Do some slight exercise for a short time when you're tired.
* Eat yogurt or fruits to replace snacks with high fat and calories.
* Distance yourself from snacks.
【1】What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Less sleep leads to more snacks.

A.Blood sugar.
B.Food items.

【3】Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.People who lack sleep usually spend less on food items.
B.Listening to soft music helps people feel relaxed.
C.Exercise as much as you can when you are tired.
D.People who sleep well can get food rewards.
【4】What's the author's attitude towards snacks?
A.Positive.

24、 Mistake is an act or judgement that is misguided or wrong. As long as we exist, we make mistakes consciously or unconsciously. Some mistakes are made because of the lack of knowledge or experience. 【1】 We name it as a habit or laziness.
Mistakes do not mean Failure.
It is not always a mistake if you fail at something. Sometimes failure happens when we do things for the first time to get out of our comfort zone. This is how we learn. It is important to make such experiments to move forward in life. When we try something new and fail, we face a lot of criticism. 【2】 But never be discouraged from these mistakes in life. Never quit. The important is to learn from the mistakes so that you can do it better next time.
Do you learn from mistakes?
【3】 This is the reason we keep repeating them. Each mistake offers a lesson if we are ready to grab it. Check yourself. List the things that you want to do differently but repeat them every day. It could be something related to your relationship. It hurts when you fight with your loved ones. You know that you have your own share of mistake. Then you decide to take care next time. However, it happens again next day.
What did you learn from yesterday? You cannot always blame the other one. What have you learned? Do not give me excuse of habit. 【4】 See mistakes as a part of life. See them as an event from which you can always learn something. 【5】 How beautiful our life will be if we stop regretting the past mistakes and lay them down to serve as a path for a better future!
A.We can not change what has happened
B.They just exist to make us strong with time.
