  • 21、The confidence people place in science is frequently based not on what it really is, but on what people would like it to be. When I asked my students how they would define science, many of them replied that it’s an objective way of discovering certainties about the world. But science cannot provide certainties.

Actually, doubt and science often go hand in hand. Science, when properly functioning, questions accepted understandings and brings both new knowledge and new questions —not certainty. Doubt does not create trust, nor does it help public understanding. So why should people trust a process that seems to require a troublesome state of uncertainty without always providing solid solutions?

As a historian of science, I would argue that it’s the responsibility of scientists and historians of science to show that the real power of science lies precisely in what is often regarded as its weakness: its drive to question and challenge accepted understandings. Indeed, the scientific approach requires changing our understanding of the natural world whenever new evidence arises from either experimentation or observation. Scientific findings are temporary understandings that involve the state of knowledge at a given moment. In the long run, many of them are challenged and even overturned. Doubt might be troubling, but it pushes us towards a better understanding. Certainties, reassuring as they may seem, prevent the scientific process.

Scientists understand this, but in the dynamic between the public and science, there are two opposite misconceptions (误解). The first is a form of blind scientism — a belief that science is unquestionable and has the capacity to solve all problems. Such an idealized representation actually ignores the universal existence of controversy, conflict and error at the very heart of the scientific world.

【1】What’s the real power of science according to the author?

    A.It provides solid solutions.

    B.It defends accepted understandings.

C.It discovers certainties about the world.

D.It keeps bringing questions and challenges.

【2】What does the underlined word “reassuring” probably mean?

    A.Disappointing.

    B.Surprising.

    C.Comforting.

    D.Challenging.

【3】What may be the belief of the second misconception?

    A.Science is unchallengeable and a cure-all.

B.Science is unreliable and of little use.

    C.Science is objective but impractical.

    D.Science is doubtful but useful.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Why Is Doubt Vital to Science?

    B.Why Should We Trust Scientists?

C.What Is the Weakness of Science?

    D.What Is Scientists’ Responsibility?

  • 22、Even though vaccination (接种疫苗) is a powerful defense against disease, some voices are against it. In a recent letter, the American Medical Association (AMA) urged big social media including Amazon, Facebook and Google to take action to defend medical science on their platforms.

It said that vaccine-preventable diseases that do harm to the public health like measles (麻疹) are on the rise. Measles cases worldwide jumped more than 30% in 2017 compared to 2016, with the largest increases seen among nations in the Americas, Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Vaccine-preventable diseases are increasing largely because many people are unwilling to get vaccinated. And some of these people even encourage others to refuse vaccination. So this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the anti-vaccination movement a top-10 health threat.

“Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways of avoiding disease — it currently prevents 2-3 million deaths a year, and a further 15 million could be avoided if global coverage of vaccinations improved,” WHO said.

A research article published in 1998 in a medical journal suggested a link between a vaccine and the development of autism (自闭症) in young children. Although the research has been suspected and many other studies have proved that vaccinations do not cause autism, the article is still impressing people strongly today. Another reason for the growth in the anti-vaccination movement is widespread misinformation on social media, which can turn people against vaccination. If a concerned parent consistently sees information in their Newsfeed that casts doubt on the safety of vaccines, it could cause them to disregard the advice of their children’s physicians and public health experts and refuse to follow the recommended vaccination schedule. So access to true information about vaccine safety is badly needed.

【1】What does the AMA require social media to do on their platforms?

A.Join hands to develop new vaccines.

    B.Introduce life-threatening diseases.

    C.Give up the anti-vaccination movement.

D.Spread the positive effects of vaccination.

【2】Why does the author mention the measles cases in paragraph 2?

A.To stress the danger of measles.

B.To show the result of anti-vaccination.

C.To prove vaccination doesn’t work well.

D.To explain the reason for anti-vaccination.

【3】Which of the following leads to the anti-vaccination phenomenon?

    A.Parents’ concerns over vaccine safety.

    B.The high cost of vaccination.

C.A research relating vaccination to high death rate.

D.Experts’ advice spread on social media.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards vaccination?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Ambiguous.

    C.Positive.

    D.Negative.

  • 23、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

On the first day of the New Year 2013, I made up my mind to go to Thailand to teach English as a volunteer. Fresh out of college with the world at my fingertips, all I cared about was travelling and seeing the world. Little did I know how awesome my life would be in the coming months!

My journey began with the attendance of TESOL certification course in my home state of Florida last February. After 3 weekends of study and another 40 hours’ post-study online, I received my TESOL certificate.

I was put in touch with Philip, who is Program Director of the Teach in Thailand. In close consultation with Philip, I chose my employment school and after many months of excitement, I finally boarded my plane to Thailand in early April, and set off on an adventure!

After a few weeks of single travel, I met up with Philip and the other new teachers in my program in Bangkok. It was great to meet other people who were on the same journey as me, see some cool sights and hang out in Thailand’s cities! Directly after that, I attended the week-long seminar (研讨会), which is included in the Teach in Thailand Program. At the end of the seminar, I was transported to my employment school---Anuban Buriram Primary School.

I truly love my job--- I teach Grades 5 and 6 and I have the cleverest and most motivated kids in the world. It’s a truly fantastic thing that you can see the difference you make in someone else’s life, right in front of you!

The city Buriram is small, surrounded with green rice fields. People here are more friendly than anyone I’ve ever met—I’ve never been anywhere where a smile is so easily received, where everyone you pass is so eager to say “Hello” and “Good morning”. I’ve been taken out to countless dinners, and been lent a guitar, a digital camera, and even a motorbike, and I am constantly given little Thai treats and the most delicious fresh fruits many times a week. I only hope to pay it forward in the future.

  • 24、   Hedy Lamarr was used to being admired for her looks. As a Hollywood film star, she was called “the most beautiful woman” in the world. What she was less known for was her scientific thinking ability. During World War II, Lamarr quietly co-invented the technology that would be the precursor (前身) to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other systems we rely on today.

She had a natural curiosity about the world around her. As young as 5, she would spend time taking apart and rebuilding her music box to understand how it worked. At 16, she got her first Him role and quickly became an international icon (偶像). As her acting career continued to take off, World War II broke out. Lamarr became restless, feeling that she should do more to contribute to the Allies’ war efforts. “Lamarr said that she did not feel very comfortable, sitting there in Hollywood and making lots of money when things were in such a state,” says George Antheil

Together with Antheil, Lamarr came up with a groundbreaking new form of wireless communication known as Spread Spectrum (频谱). The concept was to create a wireless signal that could travel quickly from frequency to frequency. But the military refused to use it in their war efforts. The technology sat unused for years, until one day in the 1960s, the military accepted it and called the system “Spread like Wildfire”.

Hedy Lamarr played the role she was expected to play in Hollywood - a beautiful star on the big screen. And without her, communication could look completely different today. Lamarr’s experience can serve as a reminder: Pursue your talents and passions. Not only will the world be better for it, but every pioneer who challenges the old will pave the way for others to follow.

【1】Which of the following best describes Lamarr?

A.She became an international star in her childhood.

B.She was popular for her extraordinary beauty.

C.She invented the technology completely by her own.

D.She had to do more to gain success in her career.

【2】What motivated Lamarr to invent “Spread Spectrum”?

    A.Making lots of money.

    B.Becoming more popular.

    C.Showing off her ability.

    D.Helping the Allies’ war efforts.

【3】What can we know from Paragraph 3?

A.A fast-frequently-spreading signal was created in Spread Spectrum.

B.The name “Spread like Wildfire” showed the hidden danger.

    C.Showing off her ability.

    D.Helping the Allies’ war efforts.

【4】Which can be the best title for the text?

A.A Film Star With A Great Contribution

    B.An International Icon

C.A Woman And The Allies, War Efforts

    D.A Wireless Communication
