  • 21、How to Order Coffee at Starbucks

Learning how to order coffee at Starbucks can be tricky, and if you think that ordering coffee at Starbucks is confusing, you are not alone.

1Things move quickly as their employees try to serve customers as efficiently as possible. Orders are generally taken at one of the cash registers. You will be asked for your first name, which you should state clearly. 2. Don't be offended if they spell your name incorrectly. People who have unique or hard — to — spell names will sometimes use an easy 'Starbucks' name when ordering, like Mike or Amy.

3 Their terms for size areTall, Grande, Venti, and Trenta. Although if you order a small, medium, large, or extra-large drink they will still understand you.

For ordering basic coffee, beyond specifying the size you want, you will need to tell the server whether you want regular or decaffeinated (脱去咖啡因的)coffee.4  If you intend to add cream or milk to your coffee, say with room for cream, or simply, with room. If you want a full cup, say no room. Read the list above the counter ahead of time, because they may not ask you which you would like. 5.

When you order, say the size you want first, then give the name of the drink, and finally add the special instructions last.

A.Starbucks is often a very busy place

B.Starbucks offers all kinds of coffee

C.Otherwisethey will assume that you want regular

D.Sometimes they will write your name in short forms

E.The ordering process is complicated because they use terms to describe drink size

F.Finally, if you are very particular about the freshness of your coffee, ask in advance

G.Your name will immediately be written on your cup and called out when, your drink is ready

  • 22、Indiana might soon have wireless charging roads where drivers can charge their EVs (electric vehicles) while driving.

Two major obstacles when it comes to the popularity of EVs are its range and charging time. And while every year there is a considerable improvement in both the factors-the Indiana Department of Transportation decided to jet-speed the process and promote EVs by developing wireless charging roads.

Electrified charging coils (线圈) will be buried under the concrete roads that will create a magnetic (磁性的) field on the surface of the road. This technology is similar to the technology used for developing wireless charging stations for tablets and phones. Cars will be fitted with a receiver coil that will pick up the charge on the way and become magnetized, drawing electricity from the coil itself.

The project will start in late summer. It is given to Magment -- a German firm responsible for designing and installing the technology. A company spokesperson called this project “a step forward towards the future of dynamic wireless charging”, adding this will pave the way for affordable and sustainable transportation electrification.

Seeing the rising price of the copper wires, the firm decided to desert copper and go with recycled ferrite (铁氧体). This achieves up to 95% of the efficiency at a standard cost of road-building installations. Given the cost savings, the project may start production soon after the two planned lab tests.

If successful, the Indiana model would represent the best in the field. While it will be the first such electrified charging road in the U. S. , Sweden has electric rails on some highways. These electric rails allow trains to charge by an electric arm on their undercarriage (底盘). Germany is not behind this trial of electric roads-and is building a structure of cables and wires that will allow cars to charge like city trams.

【1】Which factor may mainly discourage people from buying EVs according to the text?

    A.Unaffordable price.

    B.Wireless charging roads.

    C.Limited driving distance.

    D.Inconvenient charging stations.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Why EVs need charging on the road.

B.What EVs and phones have in common.

C.Where electrified charging coils will be buried.

D.How cars will get charged wirelessly on the road.

【3】What can be inferred from the text?

A.The price of recycled ferrite is on the decline.

B.The project can increase the popularity of EVs.

C.EVs can charge on electric roads very soon.

D.Indiana is the first to have electrified charging roads.

【4】What is the author’s attitude to the project?

    A.Objective.

    B.Critical.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 23、Researchers have just completed the first worldwide record of lake color. Roughly one-third of them are blue but that number may drop if global temperatures rise. If average air temperatures in summer rose just a few degrees warmer, some of those crystal blue waters could turn green or brown.

Lake color offers clues to the stability of lake ecosystems. Factors such as water depth and how the nearby land is used also matter. Lake color depends in part, too, on what’s in the water. Compared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more algae (水藻) and organic matter. That’s according to Xiao Yang, a hydrologist who works at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Changing lake colors, he says, could also change how people use those waters.

Yang was part of a team that analyzed the color of more than 85,000 lakes around the world. They used satellite photos from 2013 to 2020. Storms and seasons can temporarily affect a lake’s color. So the researchers focused on the most frequent color observed for each lake over the seven-year period. The scientists then looked at local climates during the same time period. They wanted to see how climate might be linked to lake color.

Average summer air temperatures and lake color were linked, the researchers found. Lakes were more likely to be blue in places where summer temperatures averaged less than 19℃. Up to 14 percent of lakes that are blue were near that threshold (门槛), though. That means just a bit more warming might tip them away from blue. Scientists think the planet could average 3 degrees Celsius warmer by 2100. If so, that could turn another 3,800 lakes green or brown.

Green or brown waters could be unappealing for play or it might cost more to clean it for drinking. But in fact, the color changes might not mean the lakes are any less healthy. If you were a certain type of fish species, you might think this is great.

【1】What is a feature of green or brown lakes?

    A.Weak ecosystem.

    B.High mineral content.

    C.Increased organic matter.

    D.Decreased water temperature.

【2】What does the research intend to find?

A.Why the color of most lakes is blue.

B.The consequences of lake color change.

C.How climate change affect creatures living in water.

D.The relationship between air temperature and lake color.

【3】What can be inferred from paragraph 4?

A.14 percent of the world’s lakes are blue.

B.3,800 lakes worldwide are green or brown.

C.Many lakes may experience severe ecological damage.

D.Some lakes are close to the critical point of color change.

【4】In which section of a website can this text be found?

    A.Lifestyle.

    B.Environment.

    C.Technology.

    D.Business.

  • 24、22 March, 2015

Today we celebrate. It’s exactly one month since the last reported case. But it is vital not to take any chances. So, 20 health care workers from almost as many countries raise virtual glasses to each other.

I arrived in Liberia with MSF almost three months ago. When I saw the tragic scenes on the news, I felt it was my duty as a doctor to offer my help, so I put aside my job and set off to go there. Ebola doesn’t respect national boundaries, so there are no borders for doctors, for patients or for anyone else involved in fighting this terrible disease.

My mission was to take the place of Emma, a Canadian specialist, who introduced me to the other staff: Wilton, a local nurse; Maisy, a retired public health official from Australia; Alfonso, an Argentinian doctor, who had previously worked on Ebola outbreaks in Sierra Leone and Guinea. The list went on. I found that I was the only Chinese doctor among people of all ages, colors and beliefs, from every continent except Antarctica. To be caught up in such a crisis creates powerful bonds between people who have come from different parts of the world and joined together in a common cause.

In the few weeks since then, we have worked together, surrounded by blood, pain and death. But, although the death rate is very high, we will never give up on a patient, and our hard work does sometimes end in miracles.

Just after my arrival, a family of six infected were brought here, four of whom soon died, leaving two brothers with little hope, but we did everything we could to save them. Next morning, we were amazed to see that both boys were still alive. They made a full recovery.

Before long someone else will arrive to step into my shoes, and the tireless work that the MSF members do will go on. It is absolutely essential for us all to cooperate to create a global community with a common future of peace and prosperity.

【1】Why did the care workers choose to raise virtual glasses?

    A.To see something clearly.

    B.To celebrate their reunion.

    C.To welcome the author.

    D.To avoid possible infection.

【2】What may MSF be according to the passage?

    A.An international certificate.

    B.A profitable project.

    C.A medical organization.

    D.A professional doctor.

【3】What message does paragraph 5 mainly convey?

A.Life is weak in face of disease.

B.Man will beat nature sooner or later.

    C.Miracles are waiting somewhere.

    D.Effort makes the impossible possible.

    【4】What is this text?

    A.A journal.

    B.A news report.

    C.An essay.

    D.A science fiction.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Eight-year-old Amanda heard Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Hyman, who was very sick and learnt that only a very costly surgery could save him. Being in heavy debt, Dad said to Mom in desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”

Amanda went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jar in the closet. She poured all the change out and counted it carefully. Three times. No chance here for mistakes. Carefully placing the coins back in the jar, she slipped out the back door and made her way six blocks to the pharmacy (药店).

On arriving the pharmacy, she poured her jar on the counter. The pharmacist got annoyed as she was talking to her brother, Dr. Bethune, a neurosurgery (神经外科) surgeon, who happened to be on a visit. Asked what she wanted, Amanda answered back, “My brother’s really, really sick... and I want to buy a miracle.” She explained her brother had something bad growing inside his head and needed an operation, and her Dad said only a miracle could save him. The pharmacist shook her head and said softly, “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you.”

Hearing this, Amanda couldn’t help wailing, tears rolling down like a broken string of beads. Witnessing this, Dr. Bethune leaned down and asked her, “How much do you have?” “One dollar and eleven cents.” Amanda responded proudly. “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled Dr. Bethune, “A dollar and eleven cents-the exact price of a miracle for your little brother.” Overjoyed, Amanda twirled and jumped.

    注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
