  • 22、We’ve landed on the moon and sent spacecraft to Mars. But how would you like to take a walk around the red planet itself, having a closer look at the rocky Marian surface from all angles? Well, for those who can’t afford a rocket ship, experiences like this are now a “virtual” step closer, thanks to AR (Augmented Reality) technology.

AR refers to the process of displaying digital information on top of the physical world using an electronic device. The device could be a pair of smart glasses, a tablet or even a smart phone. Unlike “virtual reality”, or VR, users can touch objects and move around in this digital world, instead of being restricted to a small area. This is particularly exciting for businesses.

These days, it’s possible to virtually try on or try out a variety of goods before buying via AR apps: Sephora’s app lets you view cosmetics in AR on your face; QUANU offers a chance to “see” furniture in your home; paint brands let you virtually view colors on your walls. These offerings provide a way to enhance in-store experiences or make life much easier for busy shoppers.

In time, AR advocates hope it will allow us to interact with a whole world that is enhanced by multimedia provided by very clever computers-transforming not only business, but also fields like healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, education, and public safely. A doctor could see patients around the world from the comfort of his own home.

Not everyone is convinced that either the technology or the world is ready. Kipman, the creator of the HoloLens, thinks we still have a long way to go before AR reaches its potential. “We will look back at this decade as being like cavemen in terms of technology,” he said.

【1】What is the main feature of AR?

A.Users may be limited to a fixed position.

B.It can be operated on any electronic device.

C.Users can physically explore the digital world.

D.It separates digital information from the physical world.

【2】What can we learn from the examples in the third paragraph?

    A.AR provides high -quality goods.

    B.AR enhances consumer experiences.

    C.AR enjoys enormous popularity.

    D.AR boosts economic development.

【3】What is Alex Kipman’s attitude towards AR?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Intolerant.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Critical.

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.AR has taken the place of VR.

B.AR is widely used in health care.

C.The world is well prepared for AR.

D.AR has a relatively bright prospect.

  • 23、   Calories are a way of keeping track of the body's energy budget. A healthy balance occurs when we put in about as much energy as we lose. If we consistently put more energy into our bodies than we bum, the excess will gradually be stored as fat in our cells, and well gain weight. If we bum off more energy than we replenish, well lose weight. But how many calories do we actually need? Calorie is just the unit we use to measure the energy we take in or bum.

Calories are used in three ways: about 10% enables digestion, about 20% fuels physical activity, and the biggest part, around 70%, supports the basic functions of our organs. That third usage corresponds to your basal metabolic rate (基础代谢率), a number of calories you would need to survive if you weren't eating or moving around.

According to the official guidelines, average person requires each day 2000 calories for women and 2500 for men. Those estimates are based on factors like average weight, physical activity and muscle mass. So does that mean everyone should take in around 2000 calories? Not necessarily. If you're doing an energy consuming activity, like cycling the Tour de France, your body could use up to 9000 calories per day Pregnancy requires slightly more calories than usual, and elderly people typically have a slower metabolic rate, energy is burned more gradually, so less is needed.

And one thing you should also know. The calorie counts on nutrition labels measure how much energy the food contains, not how much energy you can actually get out of it, Fibrous (纤维的) foods like celery and whole wheat take more energy to digest, so you'd actually absorb less energy from 100 calorie serving of celery than a 100 calorie serving of potato chips. Not to mention the fact that some foods offer nutrients like protein and vitamins, while others provide far less nutritional value. Eating too many of those foods could leave you overweight and malnourished. And even with the exact same food, different people might not get the same number of calories.

So a calorie is a useful energy measure, but to work out exactly how many of them each of us requires, we need to factor in things like exercise, food type, and our body's ability to process energy.

【1】What is Calorie according to the passage?

A.A unit of measurement to the energy people get or consume.

B.The food people eat and digest.

C.The unit for people to count weight.

D.The way people to measure nutrition.

    【2】One can lose weight, if________.

A.less food is eaten than before

    B.doing exercise every day

C.more energy is fueled than taken in

    D.one keeps energy balanced

【3】Which fact is true according to the passage?

A.The excess of calories will gradually turn into cells.

B.Most of the calories will help people with digestion.

C.When staying still no calorie will be needed.

D.The biggest amount of energy will go to support body organs.

    【4】The author may agree that________.

A.potato chips are hard to digest

B.the food with more fibers can help keeping slim

C.the foods with protein and vitamins could leave you overweight and malnourished

D.old people's energy is gradually burning fast

【5】The best title of this passage should be?

    A.Calories and Diet

B.Many Factors Contribute to Calorie Count

C.The Relevancy between Calorie Burning and Age

D.Different People, Different Calorie Burning Rate

  • 24、   A shark moving around the coastline is normally a worrying sightbut this waterborne drone(无人机)threatens floating rubbish instead of people.

Developed by Dutch company RanMarine, the WasteShark takes nature as its inspiration with its whale shark-like mouth. Responsible for collecting waste, the drone will begin operations in Dubai Marina in November after a year of trials with local partner Ecocoast.

According to RanMarine, the WasteShark is available in both autonomous and remote-controlled models. Measuring just over five feet by three-and-a-half feet(1.5 meters by 1.1 meter)it can carry up to 352 pounds of rubbish(159.6 kg)and has an operational battery life of 16 hours.

By 2016 there were approximately 150 million tons of plastic in the world's oceans. One paper from December 2014 estimated that over a quarter of a million tons of ocean plastic pollution was afloat.

"WasteShark also has the abilities to gather air and water quality data, remove chemicals out of the water such as oiland heavy metalsand scan the seabed to read its depth and outlines"said Oliver Cunningham, one of the co-founders of RanMarine. "Fitted with a collision-avoidance system, the drone uses laser imaging detection and ranging technology to detect an object in its path and stop or back up if the object approaches."

"Our drones are designed to move through a water system, whether it's around the perimeter(周边) or through the city itself. The drones are that last line of defense between the city and the open ocean," added Cunningham. "WasteSharks are operating in Dubai, South Africa and the Netherlands and cost $ 17,000 for the remote-controlled model and just under $ 23,000 for the autonomous model."

Dubai-based operator Ecocoast has two WasteShark drones. Co-founder Dana Liparts says they will clean waterfronts for clients including hotels and environmental authorities and that Ecocoast' intention is to have the collected rubbish recycled or upcycled. However, Liparts argues that cleaning waterways doesn't have a one-size-fits-all solution and requires a combination of new technology, preventative measures and changing people's attitudes towards littering.

1What do we know about the WasteShark?

    A. It can frighten sharks away. B. It is an ocean explorer.

    C. It is a rubbish collector. D. It can catch fish instead of people.

2What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?

    A. The causes of ocean pollution. B. The dangers of using plastics.

    C. The severity of ocean garbage pollution. D. The importance of ocean protection.

3What will the WasteShark do with an approaching object?

    A. Avoid crashing into it. B. Break it into pieces.

    C. Swallow it. D. Fly over it.

4Which of the following ideas does Liparts agree with?

    A. The WasteShark should be used more widely.

    B. More measures should be taken to make water clean.

    C. The production cost of WasteSharks should be reduced.

    D. People should take a positive attitude to new technology.
