21、 Calling someone a “birdbrain” is considered rude. It implies that someone has a small brain and thus is not smart. A new study found that the expression doesn’t do birds justice either. Birds’ brains are much bigger than we thought-at least compared to their small bodies.
An international team of 37 scientists measured the brain volume of hundreds of dinosaurs and extinct birds by scanning fossils of their skulls. The readings were compared to a large database containing the brain sizes of modern birds. These measurements were then analyzed, taking into consideration each bird’s body size-resulting in something called “relative brain size”. The results showed that a dramatic change of birds’ body size happened right after the mass extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
According to the study, published on April 23 in the journal Current Biology, birds and non-avian (非鸟类的) dinosaurs had similar brain sizes before the extinction. After the extinction of the dinosaurs, however, birds had to find a way to survive, so they shrank their bodies-since smaller animals need less food-but they kept their big brains.
“The changed landscape may have caused the rapid evolution of new brain-body scaling patterns (缩放比例) by favoring both larger brains and smaller bodies,” US paleontologist (古生物学家) Daniel Ksepka, who is the lead author of the study, told CNN.
This “evolutionary brain leap”-as scientists call it-also happened very rapidly. Without dinosaurs, birds quickly repopulated. They came in all types and sizes, which contributed to the diverse species of birds we see today.
But among all the bird species, certain ones “show above average rates of brain and body size evolution”, study co-author Adam Smith at Clemson University, US, said in a statement-with crows and parrots being the most evident. In fact, previous studies have already discovered that these birds have an amazing cognitive ability. They are able to use tools, imitate human speech and even remember human faces.
So, in the words of Smith, “calling someone ‘bird-brained’ is actually quite a compliment!”

23、Misfortune is a part of life. Dealing with challenges and overcoming difficulties are something we all encounter, from childhood until old age. People who remain calm in the face of misfortune have what psychologists call resilience. Resilient people experience the same amount of stress as others. 【1】. Resilient people make lemonade when life gives them lemons. They always find alternate solutions to a problem.
Resilience is like a muscle. Even if you consider yourself resilient, you may need to develop and strengthen it. To build resilience, experts suggest the following list:
●Nurture ( 培 育 ) relationships
Set up and maintain a support network before you need it. 【2】, a supportive friend with good listening skills can make a big difference. And if you want your friends and family to support your resilience, remember to support theirs too.
● 【3】
When somebody needs you, you just cope with stress that much better. Your sense of purpose doesn’t have to come from school or work. It can also come from hobbies or volunteer projects, like cleaning up litter in a neighborhood park.
●Don’t try to remove misfortune completely
Resilience usually refers to how we handle serious misfortune, but our reactions to big problems may be informed partly by the many smaller setbacks we face in daily life. 【4】.
【5】. Think about the things that help you deal with stress, which can also help you become more resilient. Healthy habits such as getting good sleep, doing breathing exercises, … these all help us achieve greater mental balance, allowing us to successfully ride out the storms we encounter on the great sea of life.
A.This list is endless
B.Find meaning in stress
C.Find a sense of purpose
D.When misfortune strikes
E.When conflicts between friends exist
F.The only difference is that they are not overcome by it
G.Everyday stress may gradually improve our adaptive systems
24、 Aristotle thought the face was a window onto a person’s mind. Cicero agreed. Two thousand years passed, and facial expressions are still commonly thought to be a universally valid way to judge other people’s feelings, irrespective of age, sex and culture. A raised eyebrow suggests confusion. A smile indicates happiness.
Or do they? An analysis of hundreds of research papers that examined the relationship between facial expressions and underlying ( 潜在的) emotions has uncovered a surprising conclusion: there is no good scientific evidence to suggest that there are such things as recognizable facial expressions for basic emotions which are universal across cultures. Just because a person is not smiling, the researchers found, does not mean that person is unhappy.
This may raise questions about the efforts of information-technology companies to develop artificial-intelligence algorithms (算法) which can recognize facial expressions and work out a person’s underlying emotional state. Microsoft, for example, claims its “Emotion API” is able to detect what people are feeling by examining video footage of them. Another of the study’s authors, however, expressed scepticism. Aleix Martinez, a computer engineer at Ohio State University, said that companies attempting to obtain emotions from images of faces have failed to understand the importance of context.
For a start, facial expression is but one of a number of non-verbal ways, such as body posture, that people use to communicate with each other. Machine recognition of emotion needs to take account of these as well. But context can reach further than that. Dr Martinez mentioned an experiment in which participants were shown a close-up picture of a man’s face, which was bright red with his mouth open in a scream. Based on this alone, most participants said the man was extremely angry. Then the whole picture was shown. It was a football player with his arms outstretched, celebrating a goal. His angry-looking face was, in fact, a show of pure joy.
Given that people cannot guess each other’s emotional states most of the time, Dr Martinez sees no reason computers would be able to. “There are companies right now claiming to be able to do that and apply this to places I find really scary and dangerous, for example, in hiring people,” he says. “Some companies require you to present a video resume, which is analyzed by a machine-learning system. And depending on your facial expressions, they hire you or not, which I find really shocking.”
【1】We can learn from the second paragraph that ______.
A.facial expressions are universal across cultures
B.it is hard to recognize some facial expressions

A.facial expression is an important way to communicate
B.machine recognition of emotion is not reliable at all
C.facial expression is not the only way to detect feelings
D.people may misread facial expressions for lack of context
【4】According to the text, which of the following statements is correct?
A.Facial expressions differ from person to person.
B.People with red face must be feeling extremely angry.
C.Artificial-intelligence algorithms can always work out a person’s inner emotional state.

A.Facial expressions are among the most universal forms of body language.
B.Computers can detect people’s mind by analyzing their facial expressions.
C.Facial expressions may not be the reliable reflection of a person’s emotions.
