  • 21、   You most likely have not heard of Jerry Lawson. But there is a good chance that he has an effect on your life! Especially if you've ever played a video game.

Jerry Lawson had a love of science and invention from a very young age. And, with support from his family and teachers, he took that love and helped change the world for billions of people, when he invented the modern video game cartridge.

Both of Jerry's parents supported his love of science and invention. His father, a longshoreman, was a science fan and encouraged Jerry to always experiment with things. Jerry's first-grade teacher helped encourage him to be someone influential similar to George Washington Carver, a great African American inventor.

Jerry earned an amateur radio license at age 13 and built his own radio station in his room. He earned money fixing television sets, visiting people's homes for in-house repair, and also working at local electronics stores. He would use his small allowance and money he earned to buy parts to help fuel his inventions.

When he was a young adult, Jerry joined Fairchild Semiconductor as an engineer. A few years later, Jerry was asked to work on a secret project. Not even his boss was allowed to know what he was doing! What it turned out to be was that he was designing the Fairchild Channel F video game console and leading the team that invented the video game cartridge. This was the first of its kind and enabled kids around the world to affordably play video games at home.

Just like with automobiles, many advances have occurred since the invention of video games. Video games are now one of the biggest forms of entertainment in the world. But all of this would not have been possible without the vision, passion, and skill of Jerry Lawson and his team.

【1】What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.Jerry's father was a great scientist.

B.Jerry's parents were good at teaching.

    C.Jerry's interest was greatly supported.

D.Jerry's teacher enjoyed a good reputation.

【2】Who made video games common at home?

    A.George Washington Carver.

    B.Jerry's boss.

    C.Jerry's teacher.

    D.Jerry Lawson.

【3】What may play a key role in Jerry's success?

    A.Devotion to science and invention.

B.Love from his family and teachers.

    C.Expectation from the game players.

    D.Development of the video games.

【4】What is the best title of the text?

A.Jerry Lawson-an Idol of Game Players

B.Jerry's Father-an Example for All Parents

    C.Jerry's Invention-a Milestone in Science

  • 22、   Gray wolves will no longer be protected under the Endangered Species Act in most of the US, federal officials announced this week.

“After more than 45 years as a listed species, the gray wolf has reached all conservation goals for recovery,” Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said.

This move was criticized by wildlife advocacy groups and environmentalists who decided to challenge the decision.

“Abolishing protections for gray wolves is irresponsible,” said Defenders of Wildlife President and CEO, Jamie Rappaport Clark. “Gray wolves occupy only a small part of their former range and need continued federal protection to fully recover. We will be taking the US Fish and Wildlife Service to court to defend this species.”

The new rule will officially publish next week, and go into effect 60 days after that. Then, states will assume control of gray wolves and accept for Mexican wolves, a subspecies that will remain protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Over the years, there has been a back-and-forth between conservation groups and the Fish and Wildlife Service over whether the gray wolf should be delisted (除名) as an endangered species. The last attempt was under the Obama administration, but was met with fierce opposition and was later withdrawn.

There was also a lot of opposition to the recent delisting of the gray wolf, with more than 837,000 comments noted online. According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the organization submitted more than 1. 8 million comments opposing the rule.

While the federal government is removing protections, at least one state is hoping to add them. There is currently a question on the vote in Colorado about a gray wolf recovery program, which would reintroduce the animal in the state. The proposal would reintroduce and manage gray wolves by the end of 2023.

"Wolves remain absent from about 70% of currently suitable habitat in the lower 48 states, and this rule could have terrible consequences for their future,” Amanda Wight, Program Manager of Wildlife Protection said.

【1】How does Bernhardt feel about the gray wolf recovery?

    A.Urgent.

    B.Worrying.

    C.Successful.

    D.Impossible.

【2】What will environmentalists do to defend gray wolves?

    A.Set more protection rules.

    B.Call on environmentalists to donate.

C.Ask the government to set up more reserves.

D.Accuse the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

【3】What can we know about the delisting of the gray wolf?

A.The related rule has been in effect.

B.It has been under debate for years.

C.Many people vote to support it.

D.Colorado will be the first to carry it out.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.The Endangered Species Act is going into effect

B.The number of gray wolves is largely increasing

C.Gray wolves will lose Endangered Species Act protection

D.The Endangered Species Act will meet great change

  • 23、   21-year-old Jasmine Harrison completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes — a new world record for the youngest female to row alone across the Atlantic.

Harrison, who’s from North Yorkshire, England, didn’t have loads of experience in rowing long distances. In her childhood, she could not even dream of such an ambition. She’d only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua, teaching swimming, and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. “Talking to a family member of a young man that had just completed it, I got to know just how amazing a thing it was. I didn’t say ‘not a chance I would do that,’ but it was more a fact of why not do it?” she said.

Every day, Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 550-pound boat she bought with some money across the ocean, covering roughly 90 kilometers. The journey left her with much time all by herself, which she said she enjoyed. But things got a little harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her music.

She had other company along the way. She saw lots of sea life, including several whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. “I’m in their environment,” she said. “It’s just amazing.”

Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. The second time, she hurt her arm quite badly. Another time, she nearly ran into a ship. When her food ran out, she lived on cookies and chocolate. In the face of great hardship and loneliness, she kept going.

On February 20, 2021, she reached the island of Antigua — the end of the journey. She celebrated her arrival with a burger and fries.

【1】What made Harrison participate in the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge?

    A.Her childhood hobby and dream.

B.Her experience of watching a race.

    C.Her swimming teaching experience.

    D.Her family members’ encouragement.

【2】Which of the following best describes Harrison’s ocean trip?

    A.Adventurous.

    B.Pleasant.

    C.Boring.

    D.Expensive.

【3】When did Harrison begin rowing across the Atlantic Ocean alone?

    A.In November.

    B.In December.

    C.In January.

    D.In February.

【4】What can we learn from Harrison’s story?

A.The early bird catches the worm.

    B.Difficulties strengthen the mind.

C.Behind bad luck comes good luck.

D.No way is impossible to courage.

  • 24、Regarded as one of the English language’s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.

Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing due to tuberculosis (肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.

At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized by a magazine. However, the negative response didn’t stop his pursuit of rhythm (韵律).

John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative-based and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821.

【1】 John Keats’ attitude towards life changed because of _________.

    C. Edmund Spenser’s poetry

    D. the criticism of a magazine

【2】 What is the common thing between John Keats and his mother?

    A. They died of the same disease.

    B. They had a bad childhood

    C. They read many books.

    D. They showed strong interest in poetry

【3】While pursuing his dream of becoming a poet at first, John Keats was _________.

    A. determined  B. experienced C. knowledgeable  D. impatient

【4】 What do we know from the passage?

    A. Keats received little education at school.

    B. Keats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.

    C. In 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem.

    D. Endymion was about a real love story.
