22、AI that Sees like Humans
For most of the past 30 years computer-vision technologies have struggled to perform well, even in tasks as boring as accurately recognizing faces in photographs. 【1】. Companies are already selling products that exploit the technology, which is likely to take over or assist in a wide range of jobs that people now perform.
Recent progress in a deep- learning approach known as a convolutional neural network(CNN) is key to the latest progress. 【2】 While human can easily distinguish between a cat and a dog, CNNS allow machines to categorize specific breeds more successfully than people can.
CNNS do not need to be programmed to recognized specific features in images--- for example, the shape and size of an animal’s ears. 【3】 To train a CNN to separate an English springer spaniel (斯柏林格斯班尼犬) from a Welsh one, for instance , you start with thousands of images of animals, including examples of both breeds. Like most deep-learning networks, CNNS are organized in layers. In the lower layers, they learn simple shapes and edges from the images. In the higher layers, they learn complex and abstract concepts--- in this case, the more detailed aspects of ears, tails, tongues, fur textures, and so on.
CNNS were made possible by the tremendous progress in graphic processing units and parallel processing in the past decade. But the Internet has made a big difference as well by feeding CNNs’ appetite for digitized images. 【4】 The technology is making self-driving cars safer by enhancing the ability to recognize pedestrians. Insurers are starting to apply these tools to assess damage to cars. In the security camera industry, CNNS are making it possible to understanding crowd behavior, which will make public places and airport safer.
A. Once trained, a CNN can easily decide whether a new image of an animal shows a breed of interest.
B. Instead, they are taught to spot features such as these on their own.
C. Recently, though, breakthroughs in deep learning have finally enabled computers to interpret many kinds of images as successfully as , or better than , people do.
D. To give a simple example of its power, consider image of animals.
E. Computers-vision systems powered by deep learning are being developed for range of applications.
F. It excels because it is better able to learn, and draw inferences from telling patterns in the images
23、 As the saying goes,’ time waits for no man’. Time is always against us, and we just can’t stop it. Maybe that’s why some of us are always running late for appointments, But if timekeeping is not what you’re good at, don’t stress. There might be a good reason for your lack of punctuality.
People’s attitudes to being on time vary. Some clock-watch and make sure they’re exactly on time for a meeting. It is, after all, rude to be late, and if you can make it on time, why can’t everyone else? But if, like me,you want to make every second count, you might try to squeeze as much as you can into the time you have available. However, when your schedule doesn’t run to plan, your punctuality inevitably slips.
People who lack promptness have been described as ‘time benders’. Author Grace Pacie told the BBC that “they’re the people who don’t want t0 be late, but they have a strange resistance to being early, and they don’t allow enough time.” They assume their journey to an appointment will always go smoothly, and the train will always be on time!
Perceptions of unpunctual people are almost always negative — even if sometimes wrong. Writing for the BBC, Laura Clarke says: Being consistently late might not be your fault. It could be your type. The punctually-challenged often share personality characteristics, such as optimism, low levels of self-control, anxiety, or a preference for thrill-seeking, experts say. It is also possible that people are late so as not to be noticeable and to avoid the anxious wait for others to turn up.
Maybe we latecomers should make more of an effort and follow the advice I heard to no ‘try’ to be on time but ‘decide’ to be on time. But I know if a meeting or a deadline really matters, then I’ll be there. Otherwise relax, even if others are blaming you!
【1】The text is meant to _____.
A.tell us to avoid being late B.tell us why we are late

【2】“Time benders” refer to those _____.
A.who don’t want to he late
B.who don’t allow enough time
C.who have a strange resistance to being early
D.who lack punctuality
【3】According to experts, it is typical of time benders to _____.
A.be pessimistic B.be negative
C.make every second count D.have low levels of self-control
【4】It is quite possible that the writer is one of those _____.
A.punctual people B.unpunctual people
C.trying to be on time D.deciding to be on time
24、 Hedy Lamarr was used to being admired for her looks. As a Hollywood film star, she was called “the most beautiful woman” in the world. What she was less known for was her scientific thinking ability. During World War II, Lamarr quietly co-invented the technology that would be the precursor (前身) to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other systems we rely on today.
She had a natural curiosity about the world around her. As young as 5, she would spend time taking apart and rebuilding her music box to understand how it worked. At 16, she got her first Him role and quickly became an international icon (偶像). As her acting career continued to take off, World War II broke out. Lamarr became restless, feeling that she should do more to contribute to the Allies’ war efforts. “Lamarr said that she did not feel very comfortable, sitting there in Hollywood and making lots of money when things were in such a state,” says George Antheil
Together with Antheil, Lamarr came up with a groundbreaking new form of wireless communication known as Spread Spectrum (频谱). The concept was to create a wireless signal that could travel quickly from frequency to frequency. But the military refused to use it in their war efforts. The technology sat unused for years, until one day in the 1960s, the military accepted it and called the system “Spread like Wildfire”.
Hedy Lamarr played the role she was expected to play in Hollywood - a beautiful star on the big screen. And without her, communication could look completely different today. Lamarr’s experience can serve as a reminder: Pursue your talents and passions. Not only will the world be better for it, but every pioneer who challenges the old will pave the way for others to follow.
【1】Which of the following best describes Lamarr?
A.She became an international star in her childhood.
B.She was popular for her extraordinary beauty.
C.She invented the technology completely by her own.
D.She had to do more to gain success in her career.
【2】What motivated Lamarr to invent “Spread Spectrum”?
A.Making lots of money.
B.Becoming more popular.
C.Showing off her ability.
D.Helping the Allies’ war efforts.
【3】What can we know from Paragraph 3?
A.A fast-frequently-spreading signal was created in Spread Spectrum.
B.The name “Spread like Wildfire” showed the hidden danger.
C.Showing off her ability.
D.Helping the Allies’ war efforts.
【4】Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A Film Star With A Great Contribution
B.An International Icon
C.A Woman And The Allies, War Efforts
D.A Wireless Communication
