二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Scientists often compare coral reefs (珊瑚礁) to underwater rainforests, yet unlike the leafy plant base of a forest, corals are animals. The soft creatures are naturally half-transparent and get their brilliant color from algae (藻类) living inside them. When corals experience stress from hot temperatures or pollution, they halt the interdependent relationship with algae, typically pushing them out and turning white. Corals are still alive when they are white, but they’re at risk and many eventually die, turning dark brown.

Scientists around the world are looking for means to protect and maybe increase corals. One common option is to create more protected areas — essentially national parks in the ocean. Beyond nature preserves, some conservationists are looking for more hands-on methods. One research center in the Florida Keys is exploring a form of natural selection to keep corals remaining. The reef system in the Keys has been hit hard by climate change and pollution, which is especially tough, because corals there help support fisheries worth $ 100 million every year.

To keep the wild ecosystem alive, Erinn Muller, the center’s director, and her team are harvesting samples of the corals that survived the environmental stress naturally, keeping them to make them reproduce, and then reattaching them to the reef. They have 46,000 corals on plastic frames under the sea. So far, the center has regrown over 70,000 corals from five different species on damaged reefs.

In the Bahamas, Ross Cunning, a research biologist at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, focuses on corals with genes that could make them natural candidates for restoration projects. He published a study of two Bahamian reefs, one that survived an extreme 2015 heat wave, and one that didn’t. “We think their ability to deal with these higher temperatures is built into their genes,” says Cunning. There’s evidence of corals evolving more quickly to resist rapidly warming climate. The big question scientists need to investigate, adds Gunning, is how much more heat corals can adapt to.

【1】What does the underlined word “halt” in the first paragraph mean?

    A.Weaken.

    B.Develop.

    C.Strengthen.

【2】What do Muller and her team do to save corals?

    A.Restore the damaged reefs.

    B.Grow corals underwater.

    C.Create more protected areas.

    D.Move corals to unpolluted areas.

    【3】What do Cunning’s words suggest?

A.Many corals have been genetically improved.

B.Cooling down the waters is the key to rescuing corals.

C.The highest temperature corals can survive is unclear.

D.Reasons for corals surviving heat waves need investigation.

【4】Which is the text mainly about?

A.The efforts made to save corals.

B.The impact of climate warming on corals.

C.The survival crisis faced by coral reefs.

D.The relationship between corals and algae.

  • 22、   For the past 3000 years, when people thought of money, they thought of cash. From buying food to paying bills, day-to-day dealings involved paper or metal money. Over the past decade, however, digital payments have taken off—tapping your credit card on a machine or having the QR Code (二维码) on your smart phone scanned has become normal. Now this revolution is about to turn cash into an endangered species in some rich countries. That will make the economy more efficient, but it also brings new problems.

Countries are getting rid of cash at different speeds. In Sweden the number of retail cash transactions (交易) per person has fallen by 80% in the past ten years. Cash accounts for just 6% of purchases by value in Norway. Britain is probably four or six years behind it. America is perhaps a decade behind. Outside the rich world, cash is still king. However, in China, digital payments rose from 4% of all payments in 2012 to 34% in 2017.

Cash is dying out because of two forces. One is demand—younger consumers want to enjoy their digital lives with payment systems. But equally important, suppliers such as banks and tech firms are developing fast, easy-to-use payment technologies from which they can pull data and pocket fees.

In general, the future of a cashless economy is excellent news. When cash payments disappear, people and shops are less likely to be stolen. Besides, digitalisation greatly expands the playground of small businesses by enabling them to sell beyond their borders. It also creates a credit history, helping consumers borrow. Yet it is not without problems. Electronic payment systems may suffer technical failures, power blackouts and cyber-attacks. What’s more, in a cashless economy the poor, the elderly and country folk may be left behind.

1What do we know about digital payments in paragraph 1?

A.They've been used in daily dealings for 3000 years.

B.They have become popular in the past ten years.

C.They can only be made on the smart phones.

D.They are leading to cash's dying out worldwide.

2Which country is the slowest in getting rid of cash?

    A.America. B.Britain. C.Sweden D.Norway.

3Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?

A.Cash payments are less likely to disappear.

B.Digitalisation enables small businesses to sell nationally.

C.Customers can have their credit history built through digital payments.

D.Digital payments may benefit the poor, the elderly and country folks.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.The future of a cashless society. B.The rising of digital payments.

C.The reasons for cash being endangered. D.The development of payment technologies.

  • 23、To the delight of bookworms, anyone who has ever told you burying your head in a book means you’re being unsociable will have to cat their wards. A new study suggests those who regularly read, especially fiction, are actually nicer and more empathetic (善解人意) people.

The study, carried out by Kingston University London, and presented at the British Psychological Society conference in Brighton, UK, last week, also found that those who just watched television seemed to be less kind and understanding of other people.

For the study, the researchers questioned 123 people on their preferences for books, TV shows, and plays. They were also quizzed about the type of entertainment they preferred from comedy or romance to drama. Then they were tested on their interpersonal skills. The researchers asked them about their behavior towards others, whether they understood and respected others’ points of view, and whether they actively helped other people.

Drawing on these responses sheet, the researchers found some mind-boggling results. They discovered that those who read more showed greater positive social behavior and a better ability to empathize with others, while those who preferred watching TV didn’t show the same ability to empathize and were more likely to show unsociable behavior.

They also found the forms of fiction people preferred were linked to their interpersonal skills and behavior. Those who preferred fiction displayed the most positive social skills. Romance and drama lovers showed the ability to see others’ points of view, while comedy fans were particularly, able to relate to others the most.

The researchers concluded that those who read fiction regularly are more well-adapted to see things from other people’s points of view, which makes them better at understanding people. However, they do acknowledge that their study didn’t conclude if the effects are causal — does reading make you nicer and more empathetic, or do more empathetic people tend to read fiction? Even so, picking up a book can’t hurt, and might just make the world a nicer place.

【1】How did the researchers conduct the research?

    A.By making questionnaire surveys.

    B.By comparing experiment statistics.

    C.By observing participants’ behaviors.

D.By referring to previous study reports.

【2】What does the underlined word “mind-boggling” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Embarrassing.

    B.Satisfying.

    C.Amazing.

    D.Disappointing.

【3】What can improve people’s empathetic abilities the most according to the study?

    A.Reading fiction and comedy.

    B.Enjoying romance and drama.

    C.Taking part in social activities.

    D.Watching plays on social media.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.All people support the research result.

B.Further study is needed on this subject.

C.The nicer and kinder people like reading.

D.Reading can help people make more friends.

  • 24、   94-year-old Suttie Economy plans to be buried in what looks like a pack of Juicy Fruit gum (口香糖) when he dies.

Economy’s love affair with Juicy Fruit goes back to his days in the service, when chewing gum producer Wrigley sent its products to troops overseas. Since then, Economy has become something of a self-appointed goodwill ambassador for the brand.

Sammy Oakey, president of Oakey’s Funeral Service and Economy have a friendship that goes back 45 years. After Economy recently suffered heart attacks, he approached his longtime friend with a request: When his time came, he wanted to be buried in a coffin (棺材) painted to resemble his trademark gum. Oakey immediately called Wrigley’s but they gave Oakey’s request a thumbs-down.

Actually, unusual burial requests are nothing new. Comic book author Mark Gruenwald’s ashes were mixed with ink that was used into a first-edition printing of Squadron Supreme. Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes were shot out, while James Doohan, known to fans as Star Trek’s “Scotty”, had his remains sent into space.

Knowing how important the chewing-gum-themed coffin was to Economy, Oakey didn’t give up the fight. He managed to contact Mars Wrigley’s top boss.

Happily for all concerned, Oakey renewed his request to the powers that be and met with success. In an e-mail from the company president, he was told the company would go along with whatever the family wanted to do.

Not only did the gum company give their biggest fan’s final gift, they also sent Economy’s family 250 packs of Juicy Fruit as a thank you for his lifelong brand love.

Economy has actually taken a turn for the better. We don’t know whether his improved condition is due to the “Juicy Fruit” effect, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from this story, it’s if you think outside the box —and ask nicely —sometimes you can take it with you.

【1】How did Wrigley’s respond to Oakey’s request at first?

    A.They agreed to it.

    B.They ignored it.

    C.They turned it down.

    D.They hesitated.

【2】What does the author think of Economy?

    A.Honest.

    B.Faithful.

    C.Brave.

    D.Generous.

【3】What is the purpose of Paragraph 4?

A.To point out green burial has a long history.

B.To prove many people follow Economy’s suit.

C.To explain green burial is becoming a tendency.

D.To show Economy isn’t the first to have a strange burial idea.

    【4】What is the text about?

    A.An unusual wish.

    B.A strange old man.

    C.A lifelong friendship.

    D.A famous gum brand.
