二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I have the bad habit of skipping to the last pages of a book to see how it ends while I am still in the middle of it. 【1】

Often my impatience wouldn’t be limited just to the books I read but also to what they were reading as well. Finally one day my daughter told me in anger, “Dad please just read a book one page at a time like everyone else!”

【2】 I have also tried to skip ahead in my own life and figure out what to do months and even years from now instead of embracing each day as God intended. I knew that the book of my life wasn’t done yet and that I had many pages left to go. Still, that didn’t stop me from trying to write the ending half-way through.

Time and again, I would foolishly jump ahead and try to solve every imaginable problem before it happened so I could reach that storybook happily ever after ending. 【3】 God loves to surprise us, and you never know what new problem, change, or opportunity each new day will bring.

Recently when I found myself returning to that bad habit of rushing ahead and living in the future again, something unexpected struck into my heart. 【4】 When I realized it I smiled, turned the book of my life back to the right page, and thanked God for today.

【5】 Each of us has to live it one page and one day at a time. Each of us has to have faith in God to help us to write it line by line and moment by moment. Each of us has to trust that our Heavenly Father will bring our story to its perfect end.

A.Life, however, doesn’t work like that.

B.I realized life is always going like this.

C.There is no skipping ahead in the book of life.

D.Nevertheless, her words didn’t have much influence on me.

E.At times I haven’t limited this bad habit to just books either.

F.I heard a special soul gently telling me I needed to live one day at a time.

G.This annoyed first my Mom, then my friends, and finally even my own daughter.

  • 22、   When my father was getting ready for work, our house was ruled by knocks and words. He used to come downstairs to breakfast.

The morning paper lay beside his plate. He always read the “Deaths” first, and then he knocked once on the table. One of my sisters brought his bread, already buttered for him. Usually he said nothing, but once I heard him say, “I love you very much, Edith. I would love more if you buttered my bread on both sides.” He read the paper all through breakfast.

Two knocks on the table meant “I am ready for my tea. “If a single knock followed that meant, “More bread, please.”

After breakfast he said, “Boots.” The paper was spread for him over the back of an armchair. Yesterday’s paper was put on the chair for his feet, and his boots were brought to him, freshly cleaned. He read standing at the same time putting on his boots. With one boot finished he said, “Bus.” At that point one of the girls went outside to the garden gate and waited there. Her job was to stop a bus when it came. It came early sometimes and it had to wait for my father. “Overcoat, hat.” One of my sisters had already brushed his overcoat. Now she held it open for him. Another girl came with his hat, nicely brushed. “Handkerchief, pipe.” They were brought and put, with his tobacco, into his pocket. He looked out of the window and said either “Walking stick” or “Umbrella”. It was handed to him. Ready now, he was still reading the paper. He didn’t put it down until he heard the shout “Bus coming!” Then he kissed my mother and went out. The girls breathed freely.

How lucky a man was to have a wife and five daughters at home!

【1】When the father made the first knock, he meant ________.

A.he had begun to read the morning newspaper.

B.he was made to feel sad by the “Deaths” news.

C.he would start to read the other parts of the paper.

    D.his breakfast should begin.

    【2】What does “Edith” refer to?

    A.A kind of bread.

    B.One of the writer’s sisters.

    C.The writer.

    D.The writer’s mother.

【3】All the daughters were quite busy in the morning because ________.

    A.their father never helped them.

B.their father always gave different instructions at the same time.

C.each of them had to start and finish her job just on time.

D.they were not clever or quick enough to do their jobs.

【4】From the story we may see that ________.

A.the father was so lazy that he hardly did anything.

B.the father was the “centre” of the family.

C.every girl in the family was afraid to do wrong because they didn’t know clearly enough what to do.

D.the father was hated by all his daughters.

  • 23、   You won't have to look far to find some natural peculiarity(特性)for which science sometimes offer a theory. However, many places are complete unimaginable

Some places attract people more than others. The incapability to understand the real story behind some of these phenomena draws many people. They are just so mysterious that there is no explaining it.

    1. Blood Falls, Antarctica

How is it that the coldest and driest place on the planet has a blood-red waterfall pouring down slowly into the McMurdo Dry Valleys, some of the most extreme desert lands on Earth? What causes the mysterious flow was only recently “discovered” in a study. Scientists believed for many years red algae(红藻)gave the unusual color. But now research has shown that iron oxide(氧化物)is responsible for the hue. The waterfall even contains strange bacterial lifeforms.

    2. Magnetic Hill, Moncton, New Brunswick

Be very careful if you choose to drive to the bottom of this hill. Stories about what happens there have been around since early 1900s. As impossible as it sounds, your car will start to “roll” uphill. “And it doesn't just work on cars—vans, trucks and even tour buses roll upward in total defiance(蔑视)of natural law,” according to Tourism New Brunswick.

    3. Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, California

Located in a remote valley between the Cottonwood and Last Chance Ranges, Racetrack Playa is a place of really beauty and mystery. The Racetrack is a dry lakebed, best known for its strange moving rocks. It looks like they “sailed” through the valley. Although no one has actually seen the rocks move, the long moving tracks left behind in the mud surface of the Playa prove their activity. The most logical explanation so far is that ice forms covering the stones, causing them to move.

1What's the meaning of the underlined word “hue” in the second paragraph?

    A.Duty. B.Color.

    C.Thing. D.People.

2What will happen if you drive your car at the bottom of Magnetic Hill, Moncton, New Brunswick?

A.The car will run in unusual way.

B.The car will run down the hill.

    C.The car will run backward.

D.The car won't work at all.

3What's the distinctive characteristic of Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, California?

A.The rocks in its valley can turn red.

B.The rocks in its valley can roll uphill.

C.The rocks in its valley can change their places.

D.The rocks in its valley can sing beautiful songs.
