二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In recent years, the amount of reading materials pouring off the international presses is large. Not only do we have to handle information in the printed form but we also have to deal with it in the digital form. At the same time, it's becoming increasingly necessary for us to read for study and work. The conclusion: something needs to be done to meet this rising flood.

Speed reading is one of the techniques put forward as a possible solution to the problem. Speed reading grew from information developed by the US Air Force. Air Force technicians had noticed that while in flight, some pilots were unable to recognize planes seen at a distance. During war, this could mean the difference between life and death. So they developed a machine called a tachistoscope(速示器)to help with this disability.

The tachistoscope is simply a machine that flashes pictures for different periods of time onto a large screen. They started by flashing large pictures of friendly and enemy planes slowly and then gradually shortened the flash of time while decreasing the size of the picture seen. Surprisingly, they found that with training, the average person was able to tell tiny pictures of different planes when the pictures had been flashed on the screen for only one five- hundredth of a second.

They later decided to apply this discovery to reading. Using the same machine and process, they first flashed one large word at a time for as long as five seconds on a screen, gradually reducing the size of the word and shortening the time of the flash until they were flashing four words simultaneously on a screen for one five-hundredth of a second, and were still able to obtain recognition. Speed reading was thus born and to this day, many courses teaching it still have some contents of tachistoscopic training.

With regular tachistoscopic training, almost all readers can increase their reading speed from an average of 200 words per minute to an average of 400 words per minute. However, when they stopped the training, most of these fast-readers disappointingly returned to their previous levels within only a few weeks.

Reading fast is pointless unless you understand what you read. However, research shows reading far below your normal speed is similarly harmful, for at such slow speeds, one tends to think a lot about the individual words and misses the general meaning altogether.

1What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.The need for speed reading.

    B.The quality of reading materials.

    C.The development of digital technology.

D.The characteristics of the Information Age.

    2Why was the tachistoscope developed?

A.To help people born with reading disabilities.

B.To help pilots send information more accurately.

C.To help pilots recognize planes quickly in the sky.

D.To improve the health of pilots with physical disabilities.

3What does the underlined word “simultaneously” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.With great care. B.One after another.

C.All of a sudden. D.At the same time.

4What can we infer from the text?

A.People need constant tachistoscopic training to remain fast-readers.

B.The more slowly you read, the better understanding you can achieve.

C.Tachistoscopic training can help everyone double their reading speed.

D.Speed reading courses today are almost the same as tachistoscopic training.

  • 22、We have a family tradition where each year, on New Year’s Eve, we sit down and go through old albums. This year, when we were doing this annual routine, I noticed my grandmother looked shorter now than in pictures from when she was younger.

Our height decreases with age. The height that most of us boosts during our teens and twenties suddenly decides to leave us behind as we get increasingly older. So we see our parents and grandparents “shrinking”.

This loss in height is observed in both males and females and across continents. Aging is universal; so too is our gradual reduction in height. People typically begin losing their height around the age of 30 years. Every ten years after this age, humans lose almost one centimeter, which roughly translates to about one half of an inch. This decrease in height also accelerates with age. Men and women lose height differently. Women lose more inches compared to males of the same age. Also, interestingly enough, the rate of height loss depends on their initial height, with the taller ones losing more height.

The length of leg bones and the spine determine the height of a person. These normally attain their maximum length by the end of adolescence, after which one’s height does not increase. During our “adult phase”, the length of the leg bones remains pretty much the same, but the spinal bones tend to play a key role in the reduction of height. Besides, the ligaments of the foot start degenerating with age. This arches our foot down. Thus, our height may reduce slightly. In addition, the body loses its lean mass muscle with age due to, in part, loss of muscle tissues. This condition is age-related loss of muscle. The muscle fibers shrink and are replaced at a slower rate. This muscle loss makes us look shorter.

Nothing can really push the stop button, but it can lose some speed through appropriate diet, regular exercise, and general avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine.

【1】Why does the author mention his family tradition?

A.To indicate the value of family.

    B.To analyze a complicated issue.

C.To introduce the topic of the text.

    D.To share his interesting experiences.

【2】Who probably loses height the most?

    A.A tall 70-year-old man.

    B.A short 50-year-old woman.

    C.A tall eighty-year-old woman.

    D.A mid-height eighty-year-old man.

【3】What changes will mainly determine the height decrease?

    A.Spinal bones.

    B.Muscle tissues.

    C.Leg bones.

    D.Foot ligaments.

【4】What can be known about the height reduction?

    A.It can be stopped.

    B.It can affect health.

    C.It can change lifestyle.

    D.It can be slowed down.

  • 23、Sustainable tourism focuses on reducing tourism’s negative impacts and on maximizing its positive benefits for communities, cultures, ecosystems, and the planet. There’s never been a better time to rethink past habits and reshape the way we travel. 【1】 As you read, think about which practices you can adopt.

Use efficient means of transportation. In general, planes and cars tend to be the least efficient means of transportation. When vacationing to closer destinations, travel by train or coach to cut your carbon footprint. Once you’re in your destination, consider taking the bus, or cycling around town. 【2】.

Conserve water and energy. Beyond transportation, tourism also relies on energy for heating, lighting, and centricity. This along with intensive water use by tourists can put great pressure on local water supplies and energy services. 【3】 Therefore, when you’re on vacation, do what you can to conserve local resources.

Slow down and stay awhile. Once you’ve reached your destination, you’ll likely spend the majority of your vacation rushing from one place to another. 【4】 Instead, you’d better slow down and park yourself in an area for a while. It will allow you to build deeper connections with local people and get to know the unique culture.

【5】 Travel offers tourists an opportunity to experience other traditions, beliefs and ways of life. Wherever you go, remember that the destination you are visiting is someone else’s home. Be considerate of local people and treat them with dignity. Do your best to leave places like you found them so that future generations of travelers and residents can enjoy them too!

    A.Respect local communities.

    B.Experience more about local life.

C.Many destinations struggle to keep up with the demand.

D.There are still plenty of businesses that don’t see the value.

E.That’s why we’ve rounded up our tips for sustainable travel.

F.Then you’ll miss out on actually getting to know the destination.

G.Actually, there’s no one-size-fits-all guideline for which method to use.

  • 24、Young children from poor families are more likely to consume junk food and fizzy drinks(汽水) than their richer companions. A study of 1,800 four- and five-year-olds found more than half of those from poor backgrounds drank at least one a week, compared to just four in ten oofy kids. They also drank less milk and consumed more fruit juice which is also linked to child obesity (肥胖) caused by high sugar intake(摄取量).

The phenomenon also relates to children who spend more than two hours a day in front of a TV or playing computer games—whatever their social circumstances. A companion study also found children from poor families were more likely to eat chips, sweets and chocolate. Professor Kate Storey said, “when you are looking at that age group, and such a large percentage of very young kids in the study are consuming a large amount of soda(苏打汽水),it is quite concerning.

The researchers carried out the study by surveying the parents of their participants to find out their dietary habits. Professor Storey said, “If you are drinking a lot of soda and fruit juice, they can displace(取代)consumption of water and milk, which are important not just for ending thirst, but for developing healthy bones and teeth, and health and wellness in general.”

Co-researcher Dr John Spence said, “Dietary behavior and intake patterns are influenced heavily by what happens in the first few years with children, and they maintain those patterns throughout childhood and into adolescence(青少年时期).” In addition to basic health education, this study identifies a need in how we are dealing with poverty and recognizing there is more to poverty than simply the number of dollars people have.

Professor Storey said that shows how education can make a difference and lead to healthier eating habits, regardless of what is happening at home. “Many families live in places that might not be very healthy for them and, as a result, they make unhealthy food choices. You can start making a difference in different places. It calls for action in multiple settings, schools and communities, for example. That light-bulb moment can happen in a variety of places,” Professor Storey added.

【1】What does the underlined word “oofy” mean in Para.1?

    A. Wealthy.  B. Healthy.    C. Fat    D. Weak.

【2】According to the passage, Professor Storey thinks it helpful for children ______.

    A. to drink more coffee  B. to drink more milk

    C. to drink more soda   D. to drink more fruit juice

【3】 According to Dr John Spence, children’s habits in the early stage of life can even affect _____.

    A. their attitude towards life

    B. their living patterns of youth

    C. health in their old age

    D. living quality of all their life

【4】Professor Storey considers that healthier eating habits can be _____.

    A. finally determined by parents’ life habits

    B. gently changed by parents’ life habits

    C. suddenly changed by family situation

    D. gradually changed by education

【5】What’s the main idea of the passage?
