  • 21、Sustainable tourism focuses on reducing tourism’s negative impacts and on maximizing its positive benefits for communities, cultures, ecosystems, and the planet. There’s never been a better time to rethink past habits and reshape the way we travel. 【1】 As you read, think about which practices you can adopt.

Use efficient means of transportation. In general, planes and cars tend to be the least efficient means of transportation. When vacationing to closer destinations, travel by train or coach to cut your carbon footprint. Once you’re in your destination, consider taking the bus, or cycling around town. 【2】.

Conserve water and energy. Beyond transportation, tourism also relies on energy for heating, lighting, and centricity. This along with intensive water use by tourists can put great pressure on local water supplies and energy services. 【3】 Therefore, when you’re on vacation, do what you can to conserve local resources.

Slow down and stay awhile. Once you’ve reached your destination, you’ll likely spend the majority of your vacation rushing from one place to another. 【4】 Instead, you’d better slow down and park yourself in an area for a while. It will allow you to build deeper connections with local people and get to know the unique culture.

【5】 Travel offers tourists an opportunity to experience other traditions, beliefs and ways of life. Wherever you go, remember that the destination you are visiting is someone else’s home. Be considerate of local people and treat them with dignity. Do your best to leave places like you found them so that future generations of travelers and residents can enjoy them too!

    A.Respect local communities.

    B.Experience more about local life.

C.Many destinations struggle to keep up with the demand.

D.There are still plenty of businesses that don’t see the value.

E.That’s why we’ve rounded up our tips for sustainable travel.

F.Then you’ll miss out on actually getting to know the destination.

G.Actually, there’s no one-size-fits-all guideline for which method to use.

This was her last major achievement, for soon after, Hattie died of cancer on June 24, 1968.

  • 23、   On Hoxton Street in East London there is a very special children’s writing and mentoring(辅导) center called the Ministry of Stories, which is fronted by its shop , Hoxton Street Monster(怪兽) Supplies, where you can expect to find monster food. The store raises funds for this very special program that fires children’s imagination.

The youth aged 8 to 18 enter the Ministry, through a secret door that is designed to open a world of opportunity by encouraging a love for writing. The organization believes that, “Writing increases self-respect, improves communication and can change lives.” That’s because writing allows children’s voices to be heard.

This year, the workshop is celebrating 10 years of helping children discover a love for writing through creative programs. Founded by Lucy Macnab, Ben Payne and best-selling author Nick Hornby, the organization works with around 1,000 children per year participating in schools, and community programs across Hackney, Islington, and Tower Hamlets. It now has over 400 volunteers and runs its program free of charge for the youth of the areas.

“Through a range of creative writing programs, and one-to-one mentoring, we aim to help young people find their own qualities that can be developed,” Macnab told The Telegraph. “We build confidence, self-respect, and communication skills in both workshops for schools and out of school writing clubs.”

One 10-year participant, Nmeso, said that the weekly after-school club he attends at the Ministry has helped him grow his imagination and improve his academic performance. In fact, he was able to move up a grade in school. What’s even more remarkable is that Nmeso has had a story he wrote published ── along with other writers in the program ──titled Andre Has a Hard Time .This is Nmeso’s success story.

  • 24、A diet to save humankind

When I was a child my family would always sit down together for meals. My favourite was among the simplest: pasta in tomato sauce. We ate fresh vegetables and fruit, and, starting in our teenage years, sipped a glass of red wine. We ate together. I indulged with a few slices of prosciutto and practised a wide variety of outdoor sports. This centuries-old Mediterranean diet kept me fit and trim - and turned out to be good not just for my personal well-being, but for the planet's health too.

In 2021 we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of UNESCO's designation of this Mediterranean diet as a “Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. 【1】 We have started to eat more fast food and have increased our portions. Fewer Italians enjoy social meals with family and friends. Italian children were among the most overweight in a recent study of 30 countries.

Poor nutrition is a global problem, not just an Italian one. The fact that it's hitting Italy, the land where the Mediterranean diet originated, represents a dangerous paradox — one of many afflicting the world of food. After years of decline, hunger is back on the rise. Globally, some 821m people still do not have enough to eat. Yet while the poor south starves, the rich north gorges: some 2bn people are overweight or obese. We waste one-third of global food production. 【2】

【3】 The world's population is expected to increase by 2.3bn people by 2050, fuelling demand for meat. Since the end of the second world war the global food system has focused on producing more food for more people — but then wastes huge amounts of it. A paradigm shift is needed. Production must concentrate on delivering better, more nutritious food. The UN's Sustainable Development Goals can show us the way. They aim to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”. These goals are ambitious but achievable.

Governments must provide incentives to support sustainable agriculture, slash food waste and meet nutritional challenges. This does not just mean taxing unhealthy foods. 【4】 Companies must not be short-sighted, either. They should support legislation requiring them to embrace sustainability.

We must change our diet. A food and environment pyramid which highlights the close links between food's nutritional value and environmental impact has been devised. This “double pyramid” is based on the traditional Mediterranean diet of my childhood. Everyone can and must continue to have fun at the dinner table — while eating what is good for our health and our planet.

A.Without a change in our diets, this disastrous cycle will worsen.

B.Farmers should use fertilizers more efficiently and reduce costs.

C.It is a diet lull of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, with only occasional meat.

D.Livestock consume an estimated two-thirds of all the land dedicated to agriculture and contribute about half of farming-related greenhouse-gas emissions.

E.Unfortunately, Italians have been turning away from their traditional healthy diet.

F.A more effective policy is to make healthy food, accessible and affordable for consumers and profitable for farmers.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、It was last February. Noel, a 28-year-old marketing manager was heading from Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport to the capital city Reykjavik with the modern traveler’s two essentials: a dream and a GPSunit. What could go wrong?

The dream had been with him since April 14, 2010 when he watched TV news report of the volcano eruption in Iceland. Dark-haired, with a youthful face and thick eyebrows, he had never travelled beyond the United States and his native Mexico. “I want to see this through my own eyes,” he thought as he watched the news on his couch.

Four months later, on a cold winter morning, he was driving from Keflavik Airport in a rented car towards a hotel in Reykjavik, excited that his one-week journey was beginning. As the pink sun rose over the ocean and shone light on the snow-covered lava rocks along the shore, he dutifully followed the commands of the GPS that came with the car, a calm female voice directing him to an address—a left here, a right there.

But after stopping on a deserted road, he got a feeling that the voice might be steering (引导) him wrong. He had been driving for nearly an hour, yet the GPS put his arrival time at around eight hours later. He entered his destination again and got the same result. Though he sensed that something was off, he made a choice to trust the machine.

The farther he drove, the fewer cars he saw. The roads became icier. He was sleepy, cold and hungry. He hadn’t set up his phone for international use, so that was no help. Another three hours passed. As his tires skidded (打滑) along a narrow mountain road that skirted a steep cliff.he knew that the device had failed him.

He was lost. He didn’t know where else to go. There was no one else on the road, and there was nothing else to do but follow the line on the screen to its mysterious end.

    Paragraph 1

The directions ended at a small blue house in a tiny town.

    Paragraph 2:

Knowing what had happened, the woman offered to help him.
