21、Experts used to believe that people assess risk like actuaries (精算师), figuring out cost-benefit analyses every time a car came too close or local crime rates rose. But a wave of psychological experiments in the 1980s denied this thinking.
Researchers found that people use a set of mental shortcuts for measuring danger. And they tend to do it unconsciously, meaning that instinct (直觉) can play a much larger role than they realize. Ideally, these shortcuts help people figure out which ones to worry about and which to disregard. But they can be imperfect.
When you encounter a potential risk, your brain does a quick search for past experiences with it. If it can easily pull up multiple alarming memories, then your brain concludes the danger is high. But it often fails to assess whether those memories are truly representative.
A classic example is airplane crashes. If two happen continuously, flying suddenly feels scarier—even if your conscious mind knows that those crashes are a statistical aberration (统计异常)with little influence on the safety of your next flight. But if you then take a few flights and nothing goes wrong, your brain will most likely start telling you again that flying is safe.
That tendency can cut in both directions, leading to either alarm or complacency (自大). Though flu kills tens of thousands of Americans every year, most peoples’ experiences with it are relatively ordinary. “We’re conditioned by our experiences,” said Paul Slovic, a University of Oregon psychologist. “But experience can mislead us to be too comfortable with things. We are also conditioned to focus heavily on new threats, looking for any cause for alarm.”
Maybe the most powerful shortcut of all is emotion. Our brains translate emotional reactions into what we believe are reasoned conclusions, even if hard data tells us otherwise. The world in our heads is not a precise copy of reality. Our expectations about frequency of events are misinterpreted by the popularity and emotional intensity of the messages to which we are exposed.

22、It's never been easier to find vacant(空缺的)jobs or to apply for them nowadays.“With technology,it's much easier,”says Dennis Masel, chief operating officer of a US staffing agency.Mr. Masel says PDF files, mobile devices and fast Internet have changed the way he works.“I used to personally send my resumes (简历) to a client's(客户) office,”he says.“Now I can send an application to a client within seconds via the Internet.”
Some companies have developed their own mobile apps to simplify the process.Job seekers can post their resumes online and apply for posts with a single mouse click. And it is not only computers but also mobile phones. However, some employers do not trace the applications they receive. It results in candidates becoming disillusioned and less unlikely to get new jobs. Dennis Masel says three steps can help you stand out.
First,he advises candidates to reach out to online networking connections at the company where you want to work.“By making a personal connection, you could essentially make your application stand out and get noticed by people.”
Second, he says, you must react quickly when you see a job you want.“For every position that you are interested in,you have to imagine that thousands of jobseekers are all coming after the same position. You have to be quick.Sometimes positions are filled within the span of hours.”
Third, use email notices on job listing sites and choose to get only the ones you want.
“I absolutely love email notices because I can get exactly the jobs that interest me, and it's really easy for me to basically in,”he says.“Put keywords in,such as the location you want to search and your experience, and get exactly what you want.”

24、 The future of space exploration may depend on an art form from the past: origami (折纸艺术), the ancient art of paper folding.
Researchers from Washington State University (WSU), US, have used origami to possibly solve the problem of storing and moving fuel to rocket engines, a key challenge in space travel, according to Newswise. They’ve developed a foldable plastic fuel “bladder (囊状物)” resistant to super cold temperatures, which could be used to store and pump fuel in spacecrafts of the future. Their findings have recently been published in the journal Cryogenics.
“Folks have been trying to make bags for rocket fuel for a long time,” said Jake Leachman, one of the lead researchers. “We currently don’t do large, long-duration trips because we can’t store fuel long enough in space.”
Meanwhile, NASA is also looking to paper folding to help observe distant planets. The agency is currently developing Starshade, a foldable, sunflower-shaped piece of hardware that would help block starlight and enable telescopes to view distant objects more clearly in space.
“A huge part of my job is looking at something on paper and asking, ‘Can we fly this?’” Manan Arya, a technologist in California, said. “Once I realized this is how you fold spacecraft structures, I became interested in origami. I realized I was good at it and enjoyed it. Now, I fold constantly. ”
Using origami for space purposes isn’t new, however. Solar arrays (太阳能阵列), experimental wings for space shuttle programs and an inflatable (可充气的) satellite were also inspired by origami in both past and present space projects.
“With most origami, the magic comes from the folding,” Robert Salazar, who helped design the Starshade and now works on the Transformers project. said in a statement. “There are so many patterns to still be explored.”
