THE REMARKABLE ROCKS area must-see on Kangaroo Island

accessible by air and ferry from the Australian mainland

Hop on new Kangaroo Island trail

    for five-day adventure

It sounds like an amusement park.Or a portion of a zoo reserved for marsupials(有袋动物). But Kangaroo Island(KI), 30 minutes by air from Adelaide in South Australia, is just the opposite. Much of the island remained inaccessible to visitors until this year.Opened to the public in May, the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, a nearly 38-mile, fie-day hike, ushers adventurous trekkers on a botanically distinctive immersion into the islands' south-west side.

Footers can expect to walk roughly four to seven hours a day, passing colorful flower, splendid sugar gum tees and massive native plant life. In this timeless setting, they'll likely sport kangaroos, goanna lizards and spiny echidna. From cliff rims, they'll overlook the Southern Ocean, where sharks lurk and schools of salmon cluster in flower like, protective formations.

The trial includes 4 camping areas, each outfitted with 24 tent platforms :12 for self-guided walkers and 12 for tour operators, who also can arrange options off the trail.

Independent trekkers pay about$124to do the walk; the cost includes the parking at the Flinders Chase visitor center ,and a trail guide and map.

KI is accessible both by air and by ferry ;www.tourkangarooisland. com.au

  • 22、 “Is it possible for Brownie not to be glad to be back after a happy stay at my uncle's?”Miss Gauss asked Dad.“It'll be all right.  Give her a bit more to eat,” he said in a low voice, without tearing his eyes  from Brownie while his wife was busy packing Brownie's belongings, saying,“Brownie is not so cute as her younger brother, Spotty.  Take care of the little thing when walking him.”

It happened on the night of July 10th, 2013 before the Gausses took a trip to Hawaii. They entrusted their pet to me  because they thought I was the first person they'd confide in. And another intention of theirs was that I had already trained Spotty into a wellknown pet in my community, which can act many tricks, such as “Sit down!”  “Stand up!”  “Give me your right hand!” “Turn around!”  She can even sing,  and,  of course,  that's just a strange sharp noise.  Having seen them off, I took beautiful Brownie home in my arms, for fear that he would slip away.

Brownie_was_the_kind_of_gogo_but_unsocial_baby,_so I tried many ways to be his friend, which made Spotty rather unhappy. They often fought a battle, seemingly to break my roof loose. Soon, Brownie turned out to be an agreeable family member. He was an endearing pet, often begging for comforts in my arms. I seized the chance to train him and he achieved a lot, which I texted Mr.Gauss. They were so overjoyed and decided to fly home ahead of time to see Brownie's qualitative change.

But,all this was thoroughly destroyed because of Brownie's death in a traffic accident.  What a poor little creature! He was really dogged(紧随) by bad luck,  and he was saved from death shortly after his birth.  For whatever reason, therefore, I was overwhelmed by feelings of guilt, which seemed to run most deeply in me.

The best way to cheer ourselves up is to try first to cheer somebody else up. That will be an everlasting pain in my heart, a wound that does not heal.

  • 23、   Researchers have watched Asian honey bees hunt for animal feces(粪便), carry it home, and then apply it around the entrance to their nests. Their findings document the behavior for the first time.

"It turns out that by applying animal feces around colony entrances, Asian honey bees are able to stop giant hornets(大黄蜂)from their nest entrances. The hornets are less likely to try to break into the colonies by landing and chewing at their entrances in a multiple-hornet attack, which is the most deadly kind of hornet attack that honey bees experience," lead researcher Heather Mattila said.

Called "fecal spotting", what the bees are doing is using a tool, researchers suggest. "Tool use is a controversial topic and the criteria to identify it have been defined and redefined many times over," Mattila says. "Across the majority of definitions, we look for an animal holding something, placing it with intentionality, and using it in a way that improves the function of the thing that the tool was applied to. This behavior of honey bees meets all of these criteria.”

Mattila and her fellows have been studying Asian honey bees in Vietnam since 2013. They’ve done fieldwork watching colonies in wooden hives(蜂房)managed by local beekeepers. They cleaned the front of the hives and then tracked how the bees looked for animal feces to build up defenses against their hornet enemies.

They found that giant hornets were much less likely to land on hive entrances or chew their way into the hives when there were more fecal spots around the entrances.

Attacks by groups of giant hornets can sometimes wipe out entire colonies of honey bees so protective measures like these are key to survival. Interestingly, the animal feces keeps away the hornets, but the bees don't have a problem picking it up or toting it around.

"At this point, we don't know why animal feces disgusts hornets but is attractive to bees," Matilla says. "It is definitely something that needs to be studied further.”

【1】Why do Asian honey bees take animal feces home?

    A.To build their nests.

    B.To defend their nests.

    C.To shelter nest entrances.

D.To set a trap for enemies.

【2】What is the purpose of paragraph 3?

A.To show tool use is a controversial topic.

B.To show the concept of tool use is hard to define

C.To show there are many definitions about tool use.

D.To show "fecal spotting" is a tool using phenomenon.

【3】What puzzles researchers in the study?

A.How honey bees find animal feces.

B.Why giant hornets attack honey bees.

C.What is the key to honey bees’ survival.

D.Why giant hornets hate feces while bees don't.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

A.Honey Bees Are Cleverer than Giant Hornets

B.Tool Using Skills Make Honey Bees Stand Out

C.Honey Bees Employ Tools to Fight Giant Hornets

D.Honey Bees Use Various Ways to Defend Hornets

  • 24、   Déjà vu the strange feeling of having been to this very place or done this very thing before when you know you haven't happens to most people at some point in their lives. The expression comes from the French meaning "already seen".

My friend Shannon knew that she was going to marry her husband the day they met. She had dated a lot of men following her divorce but none of them felt right. Then she met Bob. There was something about the way he smiled his voice and the shape of his hands that made her think that they had known each other before. After talking it was clear that their paths had never crossed but after their first lunch date they became inseparable. What Shannon and Bob immediately felt for each other was more than just physical chemistry. It was a natural understanding and a depth of closeness that usually arises after couples are together for many years. They were married two months after they met and have been together now for ten years.

I'm often asked how to tell the difference between a feeling of déjà vu when we first meet someone and all attraction stemming from an addictive obsession (痴迷).

There is a strong tendency among addicts to try to "fix" themselves with love rushing prematurely into relationships inspired only by strong physical attraction. They often have nothing to do with déjà vu but stem rather from a basic emptiness that longs to be filled. There is no true bond between the people involvedthey hardly know each other and these partnership attempts fail miserably when the pink glow of newness wears off. Howevermostly déjà vu experiences convey a quality that is quiet and solid. The possibility of having a déjà vu is existing in partnerships of all kindsparticularly the more intimate ones. It can occur in business friendships and family often leading to outcomes that can impact the direction of our life.

Déjà vus can take place anywhere at any time and with anyone. Don't let these possibilities pass you by. Summoning the courage to take a chance and act to have faith in what is not yet visible will make the experience your own.

    1What is déjà vu

A.The false belief that one has experienced something before.

B.The fact that one is often cheated by his belief.

C.The wrong idea that couples share everything in life.

D.The feeling that one falls in love at first sight.

2Why does the author mention his friend's love story in Paragraph 2

    A.To introduce the topic.

    B.To entertain the readers.

    C.To support the explanation.

    D.To analyze couple relationship.

3In what way is déjà vu different from physical attraction

    A.It occurs all the time.

    B.It's stable and lasts long.

    C.It involves a previous experience.

    D.It appears only between couples.

4What does the author suggest doing when déjà vu takes place

    A.Practicing before acting.

B.Calming down and letting it go.

C.Regarding it as nothing but imagination.

D.Seizing the opportunity and taking actions.
