22、Last year, Wolf Cukier, who is 17 years old, spent his summer vacation as few other rising seniors have:he helped discover a planet-TOI 1338b, the newly identified world orbiting two stars which are more than 1, 300 light years away.
Last July, just after he finished his junior year at Scarsdale High school in Scarsdale, New York, Wolf started an internship(实习期) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
During the first week of the internship, as be combed through data that had been flagged by citizen-scientists. he fixed attention on s system that included two orbiting stars. He identified a body in that system that was later proved as a planet about 6.9 times as large as Earth. while knowing this inspiring discovery, his colleagues immediately gave the system a name, TOI 1338b.
According to scientific research, any dip in the brightness of a single star is a good indication that a planet has crossed in front of it. However, TOI 1338b was particularly complicated because it involved two stars-a large star ere the planers track was easy to detect, and a smaller one where the planet's track was so small that it was not observable.
Many people think that wolf is a lucky dog, but as a matter of fact, it is not just a coincidence. When he studied in Junior High School, he had shown great passion on astronomy and was devoted to studying it. Wolf plans to study astrophysics(天体物理学) when he starts college in September. When it came to his contribution to the discovery of the new world. he emphasized it was the team work in the verification process rather than his own effort that counted.

23、Would it surprise you to learn that the vast majority of adults—around 75 per cent—tell up to two lies every day? That’s according to a recent US study. What this suggests then is that you’ve probably told a lie or two in the past 24 hours and chances are you’ve also been lied to.
Before you start protesting your innocence or confronting loved ones and colleagues, though, it’s worth noting that the bulk of these lies fall into the “hardly worth mentioning” category. Think little white lies such as attempting to spare someone’s feelings or gently twisting the facts to avoid looking bad.
People tell lies for a variety of reasons, say the US researchers. Just over 20 percent are told in a bid to avoid other people; a further 20 percent are jokes; 14 percent are told in self-protection; 13 percent are attempts to make a good impression; 11 percent are told to protect others; and 9 percent are for personal gain. Still, less than 12 percent of lies can be categorized as “big lies”— and these are usually the ones that really matter. An example of a big lie, according to the study’s authors, would be saying “I love you” without being sincere.
So, are there any body language giveaways that can help “out” someone who’s lying? Back in 2015, University of Michigan researchers identified some common behaviors among liars, including frowning or grimacing (扮怪相), looking directly at the questioner in a bid to appear trustworthy, and overcompensating by gesturing with both hands. A more recent study, from Erasmus University in Rotterdam, found that liars may unconsciously mimic the body language of those around them while their brains are otherwise engaged in telling lies. It’s also worth looking out for the “eye dart”: when we glance to the left, we’re attempting to recall facts and events; when we look to the right, we’re thinking more creatively.
Vocal factors can offer a good clue, too. People who are being deliberately dishonest — or who lack certainty in what they’re saying — tend to speak slower and place less emphasis on the middle of words, according to a study at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Interestingly, the researchers also found that listeners automatically registered these voice changes as a sign of dishonesty, even when they weren’t being asked to do so.
Earlier studies have suggested that we may know intuitively when someone is lying. It’s important to remember though that none of these pointers offer undeniable evidence that you’re dealing with a liar. After all, some people just grimace more or speak slower than others.
【1】Which of the following lies are not categorized as “hardly worth mentioning”?
A.“I love your new haircut.”
B.“Relax. It makes no difference to me.”
C.“I am so into you.”
D.“My train was cancelled” instead of “I overslept and missed my train”.
【2】How does a liar’s body language give away himself?
A.He looks directly at the questioner to show his trust in him.
B.He unintentionally repeats the gesture made by the person he talks to.
C.He keeps glancing to the left from time to time when he talks.
D.He speaks slower and emphasizes the middle of the words less.
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.On average, all of us are lied to once or twice a day.
B.Most of the lies are told for the benefit of others.
C.A liar tends to gesture too much with both hands when he lies.
D.A dishonest man lacks certainty in what he’s saying.
【4】Which of the following statements does the author agree with?
A.We should rely on our intuition when spotting a liar.
B.Body language alone can serve as a sign of dishonesty.
C.Those who grimace more while speaking must be a liar.
D.There is no reliable pointer to identify a liar.
24、Slowing down was the last thing on Elaine Schaefer's mind when she turned 70 last year. She'd enjoyed an ambitious travel schedule for the previous decade. She didn't feel too old to travel.
Yet many people are asking that slightly embarrassing question: Can you be too old to travel? The travel industry has already responded. Try renting a car in Europe, for example. In Croatia, Schaefer wouldn't be able to this year, because the maximum age is 70. Insurance companies require higher rates; tour operators limit certain activities. That feels like a " no" for many travelers.
Definitely some folks should think twice before traveling, but not only based on their age. It's their level of fitness, says Kirsten Veldman, a former tour guide who now edits a retirement blog. She recalls a 93-year-old who was disabled and traveling alone on a Caribbean tour. "You can't expect to ask a tour leader to be there for you 24/7 for medical care. " she says. "Tour guides don't have the time, skills, and knowledge for it. So, in this case, my advice is: he shouldn't have traveled with us in this situation. "
But some tour operators serve older travelers. For example, Grand Circle Travel started in 1958 to serve senior members. “We have travelers into their 80s and even 90s. Some travel as a couple and some alone,” says company spokeswoman Ann Shannon. “We have no age limit.”
If you ask travel experts, they'll tell you that age is just a number. It's a question of physical, and to a certain extent, mental ability. "Many of our travelers are retired, focused on keeping their good health, and are experienced travelers who have a good idea of what to expect, "says Sara Baer-Sinnott, president of Oldways, a food and nutrition nonprofit that operates tours. "Someone in their 40's may struggle more than someone in their 80s. "

A.She can rent a car to go around.
B.She has to pay more insurance fees.

A.His old age.
B.His lack of money.
C.His poor health.
D.His in sociable personality.
【3】What do we know about Grand Circle Travel?
A.It is a non-profit traveling organization.
B.It offers service to a wide range of travelers.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For years, I posted pictures of my grandson, cute animals and delicious dishes, and video clips of people’s funy behaviour and the like on Facebook. Moreover, I played a farm game or two on this popular social media site. I thought Facebook was for fun, but I never expected a post I saw on Facebook could have a significant impact on my life.
On November 12th, 2010, I was on my way to a conference by plane. Suddenly, I suffered a heart attack. Luckily, there were three doctors on board. In less than a minute, I was given first aid. I survived, but months later, I was still trying to come to terms with what had happened. So I began to record how I survived this incident as well as my ideas about life on Facebook daily, and started to care about Facebook posts that had nothing to do with fun.
One morning on March, 2011, I looked through my Facebook feed and saw a friend’s post. She wrote, “Let go of anything unrealistic and all activities that do not mirror your brightest intentions for yourself.” The words touched me greatly. That night, I copied them onto a clean piece of paper and taped it to my laptop.
Actually, I was crazy about farm games then. I, along with many of my friends, played FarmVille. But one little farm game was not enough for me. I thought I needed more farms, more crops, and more livestock. All were in virtual form,of course. I had five different farms in five different games. And I spent hours on my farms every day. While attending to my virtual farms one day I looked out of the window and noticed the empty land in our backyard.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150 左右;
