二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It’s an attractive idea: by playing online problem-solving, matching and other games for a few minutes a day, people can improve such mental abilities as reasoning, verbal skills (语言能力) and memory. But whether these games deliver on those promises is up for debate. “For every study that finds some evidence, there’s an equal number of papers that find no evidence,” says Bobby Stojanoski, a cognitive (认知的) psychologist at Western University in Ontario.

Recently, in perhaps the biggest real-world study of these programs, Stojanoski and his team found 8,563 volunteers. First, participants filled out an online questionnaire about their training habits and which, if any, program they used. Some 1,009 participants reported using brain training programs for about eight months on average, though durations ranged from two weeks to more than five years. Next, the volunteers completed 12 cognitive tests assessing memory, reasoning and verbal skills. They faced memory exercises, spatial reasoning tasks, pattern-finding puzzles and strategy challenges.

When researchers looked at the results, they saw that brain trainers on average had no mental edge over the other group in memory, verbal skills and reasoning. Even among those who had used training programs for at least 18 months, brain training didn’t boost thinking abilities above the level of people who didn’t use the programs.

“No matter how we sliced the data, we were unable to find any testimony that brain training was associated with cognitive abilities,” says Stojanoski. That held true whether the team analyzed participants by age, program used, education or socioeconomic status (地位)—all were cognitively similar to the group who didn’t use the programs.

“Brain training may be beneficial in specific situations, but real world may be the best brain trainer,” says Elizabeth Stine-Morrow, a cognitive aging scientist at the University of Illinois. While it’s possible to improve mental abilities, Stine-Morrow advocates practicing those skills in different real-life situations, “That’s a much better use of one’s time than sitting at a computer and doing little tasks.”

【1】What is the recent study mainly about?

    A.The importance of memory.

B.The dark side of online games.

C.The effect of brain training games.

D.The way to improve mental abilities.

【2】What were the volunteers asked to do in the first part of the study?

    A.Report their daily habits.

    B.Take some memory tests.

    C.Receive some online training.

    D.Complete a questionnaire.

【3】What does the underlined word “testimony” mean in Paragraph 4?

    A.Enhancement.

    B.Evidence.

    C.Solution.

    D.Trouble.

【4】What does Stine Morrow say about mental abilities?

A.They need to be trained regularly.

B.They’ll be harmed by using computers.

C.They may change in different situations.

D.They’ll be improved through real-life tasks.

  • 22、AI could help us deconstruct the magic of music

We all know that music is a powerful influencer. 【1】 Fitness without a warm-blooded song would be boring. But is there a way to quantify these reactions? And if so, could they be reverse-engineered and put to use?

In a new paper, researchers at the University of Southern California mapped out how things like tone, rhythm, and harmony cause different types of brain activity, physiological reactions (heat, sweat, and changes in electrical response), and emotions(happiness or sadness), and how machine learning could use those relationships to predict how people might respond to a new piece of music. The results, presented at a conference on the intersections of computer science and art, show how we may one day be able to engineer targeted musical experiences for purposes ranging from therapy to movies.

【2】 “Once we understand how media can affect our various emotions, then we can try to productively use it for actually supporting or enhancing human experiences,” says Shrikanth Narayanan, a professor at USC and the principal investigator in the lab.

The researchers first searched music streaming sites for songs with very few plays, tagged either “happy” or “sad.” 【3】 Two reliably caused sadness and one reliably caused happiness. One hundred participants who hadn’t heard the songs before split into two groups, listened to all three pieces, and either took a special scan or wore pulse, heat, and electricity sensors on their skin and rated the intensity of their emotions on a scale of 0 to 10. The researchers then fed the data, along with 74 features for each song, into several machine-learning mathematical steps and examined which features were the strongest predictors of responses. They found, for example, that the brightness of a song (the level of its medium and high frequencies) and the strength of its beat were both among the best predictors of how a song would affect a listener’s heart rate and brain activity.

The research is still in very early stages, and it will be a while before more powerful machine-learning models will be able to predict your mental and physical reactions to a song with any precision. But the researchers are excited about how such models could be applied: to design music for specific individuals, to create movie soundtracks easily arousing sympathy, or to help patients with mental health problems stimulate specific parts of their brain. 【4】 They want to start trying music-based therapies as well.

A.The research focuses on whether machine can learn to predict people’s preference of music.

B.The lab is already working with addiction treatment clinics to see how other forms of media could help patients.

C.A movie without a soundtrack doesn’t stimulate the same emotional journey.

D.Through a series of human testers, 60 pieces for each emotion were narrowed down to a final list of three.

E.The research is part of the lab’s broader goal to understand how different forms of media affect people’s bodies and brains.

F.The researchers are excited about how AI could be used to enhance the function of music in more fields.

  • 23、   Festivals are about fun in large helpings(一份食物), and science festivals should be no exception There should be plenty of it at the second Edinburgh Science Festival, which runs from 2 April to 16 April, But there really does seem to be something to cater for all tastes in the impressive listing of more than 300 events.

For starters, what about a tour of tropical crops in the Botanical Gardens- tastes and smells included? You can follow that up with a course of lectures and tastings of Italian food and wine given by the finest Italian delicatessen(熟食) in the country. No trip to Scotland would be complete without a trip to a distillery(酿酒厂) to see how the" water of life" is made.

Besides food and drink "practicals", you can try something in the medicine section. There are also plenty of events designed for kids, such as the Discovery Dome and the "hands on"science tent. OK,you might say, but where is the high-tech physics, the computer science and the space technology? Well, it is all in Edinburgh, but room is unavailable here to list the entire programme: including the daily diary and A map of venues. It covers 20 pages! There is also a host of specialist conferences on a range of topics including statistics, computing and urban planning. The idea seems to be to make Edinburgh a focus of science at all levels during the festival.

The programme of the festival is well arranged and subdivided, making it easy to pick out interesting events to suit your tastes, whatever they may be. Venues and the target audience (children, adults or specialists)are all clearly coded and the maps posted along the road should make it easy to get around.

    A.It lasts for 14 days. B.It includes 300 events.

C.It has much fun about food. D.It is the largest festival in Edinburgh.

2What does the author strongly recommend for a trip to Scotland?

A.Tasting the delicious local food. B.Visiting the famous Botanical Gardens.

C.visiting a factory where the wine is made. D.Seeing how the drinking water is made.

3Why can't we find information about the entire high-tech programme?

A.The information is too much to list

    B.There are more important events.

C.The visitors are not interested in it.

D.The information concerned has appeared in the poster.

4What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A.The events suit all the tastes.

B.It is convenient for tourists to visit the festival.

C.Tourists have to buy a map for the festival.

D.The target audience are restricted to certain events.

  • 24、   Most sea turtles, whales and fish may have plastic in their bodies. To determine the various forms and colors of this material in marine animals, Marga Rivas at the University of Almeria in Spain and her team analyzed data from 112 studies published in the past decade. These looked for microplastics and larger macro plastics in marine species globally.

Of the studies, 80 examined the gastrointestinal tracts (胃肠道)of animals to see what they had taken in. The others also looked at wider animal tissues to identify plastics that end up in other parts of the body. After examining all of the data, Rivas and her team concluded that 66 per cent of sea turtles have white-colored macro and microplastics in their systems, while 55 percent have a distinct class of plastic called microfibers, which are shed by some fabrics (织物). The high amount of white plastic in turtles was unsurprising, says Rivas, given that plastic of this color, particularly larger pieces, may resemble jellyfish, a large part of the animals' diets.

Microfibers were also present in 80 percent of whales and dolphins - and white macro and microplastics in 38 percent of them. The researchers also concluded that clear fiber microplastics are probably the most common form of this waste that is taken in by large marine animals globally. Rivas and her colleagues also discovered that the animals with the highest rates of plastic were those in the Mediterranean and the northeast Indian Ocean.

“The Mediterranean is the most contaminated sea in the world, so we expected to find these results,” says Rivas. Marine plastic pollution has increased roughly 10-fbld since 1980, and Rivas says the problem is worsened by inadequate water treatment systems. In parts of India and the southeast Mediterranean, waste water isn’t adequately treated or recycled, she says. This means that microfibers shed by fabrics in washing machines, and larger pieces of rubbish, enter the sea. “It’s possible to introduce management strategies to control these huge threats,” says Rivas.

1How did Rivas and her team conduct the study?

    A.By doing comparative experiments.

B.By analyzing data from previous studies.

C.By determining the forms and colors of plastics.

D.By looking for plastics in global marine animals.

2Why was it unsurprising to find a large amount of white plastic in sea turtles?

A.White plastic looks like the food sea turtles consume.

B.More while plastic was in the sea than that of other colors.

C.White plastic is the most common form of the plastic waste.

D.White microfibers from fabrics were abundant in the oceans.

3What does the underlined word “contaminated” probably mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Researched B.Conserved C.Examined D.Polluted

4In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
