二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It was a winter afternoon when, rushing to attend the final show of my art school degree, I caught the heel of my boot on the edge of a pavement. Suddenly, I was flying through the air. If the past two years studying photography had taught me anything, it was an appreciation of how things can change in a thousandth of a second. Light, shadow, colours, all are in a constant state of flux (不断的变动) — as is life. And since crash-landing onto my left shoulder, I have been living through the truth of this wisdom.

That day, doctors diagnosed a cracked bone. It was only the next morning when, instinctively, I tried to capture some spectacular sunlight streaming into my kitchen, that I had to face the harsh reality: I could no longer lift my camera, let alone us it. Latch that week, a hospital appointment confirmed my worst scar — the arm needed total rest.

Soon, I became cantankerous and impatient. I couldn’t travel, I could’t go anywhere much. Surfing online, I came across the concept of gratitude inter vent ions and their role in boosting mood and well being. A Californian psychologist, Sonja Lyubomirsky, has pioneered research into using a daily photography practice as a tool for enhanced gratitude. Her instructions are simple, but not necessarily cask. Take photographs throughout the day of things that are central to who you are. Take at least five photos a day. Initially, it felt like a demanding task. But reading how participants assigned to the gratitude interventions had experienced enhanced positive emotions, I decided to persevere.

Pain forced me to slow down, because capturing a single iPhone photo was painful. And, yet, the struggle to find anything to feel grateful about, and then to record it, started to dramatically improve both my mood and my images. I began to photograph the most boring details of my days, from my breakfast cup to a red pepper reflected in the window. Despite everything, I found I could find magic in the ordinary. “Life seems repetitive and boring when you don’t notice the uniqueness of each moment and the constant subtle changes that are going on all around you,” write Andy Karr in a wonderful book on photography. I agree, but don’t just take my word for it — experience it for yourself.

    A.suspicious of the hospital diagnosis

B.desperate to have my injury treated

    C.enthusiastic about boosting wellbeing

【3】The writer photographed the boring life routine because______.

A.underlying magic consisted in daily affairs

  • 22、Arizona’s Best Outdoor Dining

For office workers, they may want to hide somewhere to enjoy their own free time. Places combining good food with great weather and remarkable views may be their top choice. Here are four of the best restaurants in Arizona that serve up a side of the great outdoors with every meal

    Pizzeria Bocce Patio Bar

This pizza bar shows the city’s rising scene. Chef Michelle Jurisin traveled to Italy to become certified by Verace Pizza Napoletana. Pizzas are made in the traditional way. The most popular dish is the Cire’s with homemade Italian sausage, mushrooms and fresh cheese.

Address: 1060 N. Main St., Cottonwood. Tel: 928-202-3597.

    Burgers By the Bridge

Located at the base of London Bridge, this open-air restaurant serves as Lake Havasu City’s room. Sitting right at the water’s edge, diners enjoy beautiful views of the boats, the bridge and palm trees from their tables. The juicy Black Angus burgers are tasty; the lightly salted fish and chips may be the best in the town.

Address: 401 English Village, Lake Havasu City. Tel: 928-302-6780.

    Mariposa Latin-Inspired Grill

Natural stones, rusted metal panels (镶板) and window walls, which is unlike anywhere else in Sedona. Sitting outside, Mariposa provides red-rock views to accompany the excellent South American- inspired food. It is especially impressive at sunset.

Address: 700 State Route 89A, Sedona. Tel: 928-862-4444.

    The House

Dining at The House feels like hanging out at a friend’s backyard barbecue. The wood-framed building is simple inside. There’s a big garden with picnic tables outside. The menu is a mix of salads, sandwiches, chili and some burgers. Try the House Burger, cheese and fried onion strings. They are served with homemade chips.

  • 23、When officials from Brazil’s Indigenous (原住民) protection agency approached the hut in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, their fears were confirmed: They were witnessing the first recorded dying out of an uncontacted tribe in the country’s history.

The man lying there, the last member of his tribe, had died, and with him an entire culture and answers to a thousand questions.

Even his name was a mystery. He was known only as “the Man of the Hole” because of the dozens of holes he had dug over the years in his territory. His age, too, could only be guessed at. He appeared to be about 60, officials said.

It was a sad milestone for a country that in recent years has seen protections for Indigenous groups undermined by an administration that has prioritized development of the Amazon over conservation.

In Rondônia, the only resident of the 8,000-hectare (公顷) area lived in complete isolation for at least 26 years after the rest of his group was killed by ranchers (农场主) advancing the agricultural frontier.

Brazil’s Indigenous protection agency, Funai made direct contact with the last surviving man only in 1996. Marcelo dos Santos, an Indigenous expert, who led the Funai exploit that met the man, said he was found hiding in his hut. “We tried to establish a conversation and offered corn and arrows, but he was terrified and very aggressive. From this moment on, we had to respect his isolation.”

Even with protections in place, the territory suffered widespread deforestation up until about 13 years ago. Attacks on the last surviving man continued, as well, including one by armed gunmen in 2009, according to local news reports.

“For me, he was somehow a miracle: to be able to survive on his own, not speak to anybody and avoid all contact maybe out of grief or determination,” said Fiona Watson, a research director at Survival International, a London-based rights organization.

【1】The death of “the Man of the Hole” __________.

A.was hidden from the public by ranchers

B.symbolized the disappearance of a tribe

C.revealed his name, age and family background

D.was broadcast live by Brazil’s Indigenous protection agency

【2】The underlined word “undermined” (paragraph 4) is closest in meaning to “__________”.

    A.afforded

    B.monitored

    C.sought

    D.weakened

【3】In 1996, “the Man of the Hole” __________.

A.made his last contact with the outside world

B.witnessed the most severe deforestation in history

C.escaped being shot by a group of aggressive gunmen

D.learned more survival skills with arrows offered by Funai

【4】What does Fiona Watson regard “the Man of the Hole” as?

A.An image of fear and isolation.

B.An image of culture and mystery.

C.A symbol of resistance and strength.

D.A symbol of history and struggle.

  • 24、   By the end of the 2020s, almost a quarter of Japan's population will be over 65. So, to help society deal with an ageing population, a Tokyo company has developed an “Ageing Suit”. As a journalist, I went along to try it out.

The few hours I spent at the “Wonderful Ageing Club” were, it has to be said, rather depressing. I, dressed in the club's “ageing suit”, was transformed rather too quickly from a relatively healthy 36-year-old to an 80-year-old.

First, I had to put on restrictive bindings (捆绑) over my knees, elbows, ankles and feet, which made me unable to move normally. The ladies of the Wonderful Ageing Club, however, were still far from finished. Assuring me that their suit had been carefully designed on the basis of scientific research into the exact effects of ageing, they next applied a pair of special gloves to my hands to make grabbing much more difficult. A number of weights were attached to my body to create the sensation of weakened muscles. A pair of earplugs muffled my hearing and my vision grew rather clouded as a result of my special glasses. This completed an imprisonment in a body more than twice my own age. Now I found myself clumsily getting my way through such newly difficult tasks as sitting down on a chair and then standing up again or opening a can of Coke.

But what is the purpose of this ageing suit? The company claims that it gives a very accurate representation of what being old is really like, and that, when it comes to planning for the future, that experience will be of great value. They hope to see whether the products or services they offer really do meet the needs of the elderly.

【1】How did the author feel at the “Wonderful Ageing Club”?

    A.Unhappy.

    B.Curious.

    C.Puzzled.

    D.Cheerful.

【2】What did the ladies of the “Wonderful Ageing Club” tell the author?

A.The suit was far from completed.

    B.The suit was scientifically designed.

C.They had to perform the task carefully.

D.They had to experience the state of aging.

【3】What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.An exhausted condition.

    B.A relaxed atmosphere.

    C.A pleased state.

    D.A restricted situation.

【4】What is the ageing suit intended to do?

A.Reduce the cost of the ageing problem.

B.Make the homes of the old smart.

C.Tailor elderly services to fit their needs.

D.Sell different products to the elderly.
