  • 21、Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh

The Centre’s ethos(价值观)is summed up nicely by the old Scottish proverb, “The story is told eye to eye, mind to mind and heart to heart.” The main draw is its programme of spoken- word performances, most of which take place in its 100- seat basement theatre. The storytelling does not just happen on stage, though. The ground floor has a large airy room used for exhibitions, workshops as well as a monthly story session for tots (Tiny Tales for one-to-three-year-olds).

    Exit through the gift shop?

No gift shop! Better than that, the centre has an independent bookshop, which specialises in myths and folk stories. Many are classics passed down from generation to generation , although contemporary material also abounds(大量存在). Kids’ books are plentiful. Contemporary highlights include Lari Don’s Serpents and Werewovles and Janis Mackay’s The Selkie Girl. Also worth a look is Animals, Beasties and Monsters of Scotland by Lea Taylor, which forms part of The History Press’s superb compilation(编纂) of regional Scottish folk stories. There are also Scots’ versions of Harry Potter, as well as Roald Dahl’s The Twins.

    Getting there?

The centre is in the middle of Edinburgh’s Old Town,at the eastern end of the Royal Mile. It is a five- minute walk from Waverley railway station. Driving in the city centre is to be avoided; the nearest bus stops are on the High Street and North Bridge. For more information, visit Lothian Buses.

    Value for money?

Reasonable. Entry to the ground-floor space is free, although all the theatre performances are ticketed. Prices for shows vary, with the average around£8 for adults and£6 for children. Cafe Voices, the centre's monthly storytelling night ,is£5.

  • 23、   Seattle on Sunday became the first major US city to ban drinking straws(吸管), an environmentally friendly move that leaders hope will spark a nationwide conversation about small, everyday changes that people can make to protect the planet.

A decade ago, the city adopted a law requiring that all one-time-use food-service items be compostable(可分解的) or recyclable. But straws were exempted from that law because there were not many good alternatives. So the straws stayed, along with the environmental problems they cause.

Most plastic straws aren’t heavy enough to make it through industrial recycling sorters, and can ruin an otherwise good load of recycling. Or they end up getting blown out of trash cans and car windows and eventually wind up in the oceans, where they can hurt wildlife.

Strawless Ocean estimates that 71 percent of seabirds and 30 percent of turtles have some kind of plastic in their stomachs. The organization says plastic can increase the death rate of marine life by 50 percent.

Now customers at grocery stores, restaurants, food trucks, even institutional cafeterias have to find another way to get liquid into their mouths. Compostable paper straws are allowed under the ban. People who have a medical need to use a straw are not included.

Failure to obey may result in a US$250 fine, although city leaders said that the purpose of the law is more about raising awareness. In September, 150 businesses participated in Strawless in Seattle, an attempt to reduce the use of plastic straws. In that month alone, Strawless Ocean estimates, 2.3 million plastic straws were removed from the city.

“When you get your iced drink, you’re going to get a straw. When you get your wine, you’re probably going to get a straw,” said Dune Ives, executive director of the Lonely Whale Foundation, which led the campaign. “Imagine a world where we could stop consuming 500 million straws a day, just in America!” the campaign says. “Imagine a world that is less dependent on plastic. That’s change we can start today!”

1What does the underlined word “exempted” mean in the second paragraph

A.To make something out of the list. B.To make something better than before.

C.To include something in a special list. D.To forgive someone who makes mistakes.

2What the problem may the drinking straws cause according to the passage?

A.They may make the trash cans dirty. B.They may destroy American recycling system.

C.They may cause much ocean wildlife in danger. D.They may cause many companies get fined.

3What is the attitude of the public towards the ban?

A.Many people are in favor of it. B.Many people pay no attention to it.

C.Some people are strongly against it. D.Only the government workers agree with it.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Seattle becomes first major US city to ban straws.

B.Seattle successfully bans people from using straws.

C.Seattle has been working hard to protect the environment.

D.Imagine a world that is less dependent on plastic.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、Optimism and pessimism are both powerful forces. Each of us must choose which we want to ______ our future and our expectations. We can choose to laugh or cry, bless or ______. It’s our decision: from which perspective do we want to view life? Will we look up in ______or down in desperation?

I believe in the upward look. I choose to ______the positive and skip right over the negative.

An optimistic attitude is not a luxury(奢侈品); it’s a(n) ______. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, how you perform, and how well you will get along with other people. ______, negative thoughts, attitudes, and expectations ______themselves; they become a self-fulfilling prophecy(预言). Pessimism creates a dark place where no one wants to live.

Years ago, I drove into a service station to get some gas. It was a beautiful day, and I was feeling great. As I walked into the station to pay for the gas, the attendant said to me, “ How do you feel?” That seemed like a(n) ______question, but I felt fine and told him so. “You don’t look well,” he replied. This ______me completely by surprise. A little ______confidently, I told him that I had ______felt better. Without hesitation, he continued to tell me how bad I looked and that my skin appeared yellow.

By the time I left the service station, I was feeling a little ______. About a block away, I ______over to the side of the road to look at my face in the mirror. How did I feel? Was I affected with jaundice(黄疸)? Was every all right? By the time I got home, I was beginning to feel a little nauseous(恶心). Did I have a bad liver? Had I ______some rare disease?

On another beautiful day, when I went into that gas station, feeling ______again, I figured out what had happened.  The place had recently been painted a bright, distasteful ______, and the light reflecting ______the walls made everyone inside look as though they had hepatitis(肝炎)! I wondered how many other folks had ______the way I did. I had let one short conversation with a total ______change my attitude for an entire day. He told me I looked sick, and before long, I

was actually feeling sick. That single ______observation had a great effect on the way I felt and acted.

The only thing more powerful than negativism is a word of optimism and hope. When a whole culture adopts an upward look, incredible things can be accomplished.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,便之构成一个完整的故事。

    Yoghurt

It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut down expenses so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.

My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.

I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.

On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then-bare hands holding a piece of cardboard, snot (鼻涕) frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
