二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Time magazine’s tradition —“Person of the Year” originated in 1927, when it honored 25-year-old pilot Charles Lindbergh for the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean Though the magazine has recognized several young people for their global influence, it has never given the important honor to a teenager. But its 2019’s “Person of The Year” is the 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

Thunberg’s rise to global reputation is even more surprising given that just over a year ago, she was a shy 15-year-old anxious about the increasing threat of climate change. In August 2018, tired of the “refusal” of world leaders to take action, the young girl started camping out in front of the Swedish Parliament every Friday with a sign that said: “School Strike for Climate.”

The teen’s act of protest soon drew public attention, inspiring kids and adults worldwide to take action. By September 2018, her weekly strike became a global climate change movement called “Fridays for the Future”, with tens of thousands of students skipping school on this day to protest the inaction of the leaders of their respective countries. Her appeal for progress in environment protection also encouraged other young activists to begin their own climate change movements.

Varshini Prakash, co-founder of the US Youth-Led Sunrise Movement, says Thunberg “symbolizes the suffering, the frustration, the desperation, the anger — at some level, the hope — of many young people who won’t even be of age to vote by the time their futures are doomed.”

The teenager, who has single-handedly helped bring climate change to the forefront of the global conversation, owes her success to her Asperger’s syndrome (阿斯佩各综合征). She says, “I see the world in black and white, and I don’t like compromising. If I were like everyone else, I would have continued on and not seen this crisis. Right now, we have entered a new decade — a decade that will define our future. And I’ve seen hope, but it does not come from the governments or companies. It comes from the people.”

1Why did Greta Thunberg camp out in front of Swedish Parliament every Friday?

A.To heighten public awareness of environmental protection.

B.To show her support for school strike for climate.

C.To condemn the government’s inaction on climate change.

D.To win a global reputation as a teenager climate change activist.

2Where can we find the direct influence of Greta Thunberg’s behavior?

    A.In paragraph2. B.In paragraph3.

    C.In paragraph4. D.In paragraph5.

3What kind of girl is Greta Thunberg according to the passage?

A.Positive and sensitive. B.Uncaring but reliable.

C.Selfish but intelligent. D.Brave and determined.

4We can learn from the passage that _____________.

A.Charles Lindbergh is the first adolescent “Person of the Year” of Time magazine

B.on account of Asperger’s syndrome, Greta Thunberg has suffered a lot

C.all governments haven’t already taken effective measures to deal with climate change

D.Varshini Prakash thinks little of Thunberg and her strike for climate change

  • 22、   The British people have just discovered a new country. It’s called the UK! More and more people are choosing to take their holidays in their own country rather than travel abroad.

In the late 1970s, air travel became affordable for the average family in the UK, and more and more British people started travelling abroad for their summer holidays (July-August). After all, the British weather isn’t very good, even in summer, so a lot of Britons leave the UK for a vacation. Particularly popular with families on a budget is the “package holiday”, where the cost of flights and accommodation are offered as one discounted price by travel agents.

In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became more wealthy. As a result, the Club 18-30 holiday became popular. Young people started to go abroad in groups, to places such as Spain and Greece. Once at their destination, they socialised with other groups of young people and had one long party.

British holidaying habits have begun to change, however. Climate change means that the UK now has a warmer climate than before, so people don’t always feel they need to go overseas to find good weather. Also, the world seems a less certain place as interconnected economies rise and fall, which means that the cost of foreign holidays is less predictable than it used to be. As a result, more and more Britons are choosing to spend their summer holidays in the UK.

In recent years, British hotels in areas such as the English Lake District have seen a large increase in bookings. That rise is mainly owing to the British staying in their own country for their holidays. In addition, for some foreign tourists, the UK is a cheaper place to visit than previously because of changes in the value of the British pound.

The UK has always been famous for its international explorers, but now it is starting to discover itself.

1What is the feature of the Club 18-30 holiday?

A.Young people went abroad with their family.

B.Young people got lots of money from their family.

C.Young people took part in social activities abroad.

D.Travel agents offered a better discount to young people.

2Why do British people prefer domestic holidays now?

A.They are wealthier and more social.

B.The global weather is becoming predictable.

C.The UK is famous for its beautiful scenery.

D.The expense on foreign holidays is unsteady.

3How is the text mainly organized?

A.In order of frequency. B.In order of time.

C.In order of space. D.In order of importance.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Holidays and Habits B.Weather and Scenery

C.Travels and Economies D.Package Holiday and Culture

  • 23、   Imagine your mind as a library. As pleasant a room as a reader could wish. Now let me describe different sort of library: The bookcases have fallen, their glass fronts broken, and their contents messed across the floor. This one belongs to the disordered, anorexic(厌食) mind. At the age of 15, 3 was the state of my mind. For 10 years, I suffered the mental and physical pain of anorexia.

A new year usually made me nervous: A time for resolutions. In January 2019, I was 24. Ten years after diagnosis, I was what doctors call a “functioning” anorexic. I would eat enough to get by: never with any flavor. That year, I made a different sort of January resolution: To read all novels Dickens by December. Something changed, I began to be curious about food, wanting to share it, taste it. His scenes, his meals made me hungry. It also turned me into a walker. I wanted to see London as he had seen it: At night, on foot.

Siegfried Sassoon also rescued me.The poet recalls cold mornings before a hunt: “We got up at four o’clock, and fed ourselves with boiled eggs.” Stopping in a bush, he has sandwiches , and on the way home he keeps himself warm with thoughts of poached eggs on toast, tea...All those eggs! All that bread! Hot chocolate! (I hadn’t had a cup of hot chocolate in a decade.) With Sassoon as guide, I learnt, at the age of 25, to boil an egg.

Most helpful to my recovery were the words of the wizard Merlyn in T. H. White’s The Once and future King. “The best thing for being sad,” he tells the boy who will become King Arthur, “is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails. . . ” Too many self-help guides say: Get fit, lose weight, eat right, make friends, find a hobby. . . Better that they should say: Learn something, read something, see something new. Feed your mind.Trigger your appetite for new books, and the other appetites-for food, for friends, for life-will follow.

  • 24、The idea of dressing for success used to be relatively straightforward; wear formal clothes, the smarter the better. In traditional offices, those at the top of the pyramid would invariably be found in a suit.

The rise of the tech sector shifted this fixed idea. Picture Silicon Valley’s most high-profile leaders, and the clothes that spring to mind are jeans, hoodies and black turtlenecks. In 2020, the widespread switch to remote work overturned work dress codes altogether. With so many different dress codes at play across companies, is it possible to ‘dress for the job you want?’

“You’re sending a message about where you position yourself and what you want to,” says career confidence coach Sarah Archer from London. “We might dress similarly to our peers to help us feel like we belong. Or if you’re wanting to move forward in your career, you might dress as you perceive the leaders dress to show that you’re ready to move into this group.”

However, getting the balance wrong by overdressing can send a negative message. An estimated 79% of workplaces in the US now have a casual dress code. Turning up in a suit to signal ambition or promotion hopes could actually damage your reputation. “You’re going to look and feel like a fish out of water,” says Archer. “Overdressing shows that you haven’t read the culture, or you haven’t been observant, and that you don’t necessarily fit in.”

Still, dressing the part can help position you for success — and the key to getting it right is careful observation. The right outfit might look very different in different workplaces, and showing you understand the unspoken rules of dress code could give you an edge.

“Dressing for the job you want is still good advice,” says Joey Price, founder of Jumpstart. “As long as you have to impress somebody on the way up, your appearance really does play a role in that.”

【1】How does the author introduce the topic?

    A.By making comparisons.

    B.By listing examples.

    C.By stating arguments.

    D.By giving descriptions.

【2】What might be the reason behind dressing like the leaders?

    A.To value the job.

    B.To earn peers’ respect.

C.To move up the career ladder.

D.To be a fish out of water.

【3】What matters most about dressing the part?

    A.Dressing more formally.

    B.Dressing as one is told.

    C.Ignoring the unspoken rules.

    D.Watching closely.

【4】What’s Price’s attitude towards “dressing for the job”?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Approving.

    D.Cautious.
