二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Autumn Peltier is a youth environmentalist who has inspired thousands of students to walk out of class and demand action on climate change.

When Autumn Peltier was just 8 years old, she attended a ceremony at a reservation where she saw a sign warning that the water was poisonous. Growing up on a freshwater island in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory in Canada, Peltier says she had never experienced poisonous water. The memory of that sign stayed with her.

Two years later, at the age of 10, Peltier is fighting for water conservation and water rights for everybody. She says she was inspired by her great aunt, Josephine Mandamin, a well-known activist who walked the shores of all five Great Lakes to raise awareness for water conservation.

When she was 12 in 2015, Peltier met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, telling him she was unhappy with his policies on debating pipeline projects. Trudeau promised her he would preserve the water. Since 2015, 87 long-term water advisories in Canada have been lifted; 56 water advisories remain.

At middle school, Peltier joined an environmental group at her school and later co-founded the Canadian Youth Water Strike-a Canadian branch of the international movement to conserve water.

Last year, Peltier spoke at the UN about the importance of water conservation and water access, explaining the fundamental role water plays in her culture.

“Many people don’t think water is alive or has a spirit. My people believe this to be true. . . . We believe our water is precious because we are born of water.”

After the speech at the UN, Peltier is joined by a group of teenagers who share similar thoughts. Her friends include Greta Thunberg, a Swedish girl who drew the world attention through the talk at World Economic Forum at Davos, Bruno Rodriguez, an Argentinian boy who joined in the UN Climate Summit, and Mari Copeny, an American girl who is dedicated to the cause of saving water. Peltier and her friends believe that together they can make a big difference.

Undoubtedly, Peltier’s many years of hard work has paid off. She has greatly raised people’s awareness of water conservation and taught people to take specific actions to conserve water.

That’s an impressive list of accomplishments for anyone, let alone a middle schooler.

1How did Peltier feel about the poisonous water when she was 8?

    A.Shocked. B.Interested. C.Excited. D.Bored.

2Who influenced Peltier to start water conservation?

    A.UN officials. B.Trudeau. C.Mandamin. D.Thunberg.

3What does Peltier expect to do in the future?

A.To make more friends. B.To protect more water.

C.To attend more summits. D.To organize more strikes.

4What can we learn from Autumn Peltier’s story?

A.World leaders can contribute to success.

    B.Environment is Canadians’major concern.

C.Fame comes from attending great summits.

    D.Achievements result from continuous effort.

  • 22、You’re out on a hike, snacking on an apple, a banana, or some nuts. When you’re finished, all that’s left is a core, a peel, or a shell. “It’s natural,” you tell yourself, throwing it into the woods.

After all, food waste is biodegradable (可生物降解的). It’s not like you’re littering by throwing away a plastic bottle. 【1】

Food waste doesn’t break down as fast as you think

Most people know food waste is biodegradable. But fewer people are aware that orange and banana peels can take up to two years to break down in the wild, meaning they’re going to be staying in nature for a lot longer than you might think. And even if they eventually biodegrade, they can lead to a lot of serious problems.

    【2】

“ Animals have a super advanced sense of smell compared to us,” says biologist Jeff Marion. All human food can attract animals. This can then cause “attraction behavior”, which refers to human actions that cause animals to overcome their natural wariness(警惕)of people. 【3】

    Attraction can mean aggression

When animals are routinely attracted to humans and their food, they often become habituated to human presence. “Once an animal reaches that point, it’s essentially game over,” Marion says. That’s the origin of the phrase: A fed bear is a dead bear. 【4】 Even if a person is injured by a bear, the human usually recovers. The animal, however, is often relocated or killed to prevent further potentially deadly encounters.

【5】 You should properly store and deal with food waste. Don’t attempt to burn or bury it, as food waste is more difficult to burn than you think. Besides, if you see other food waste in nature, pick it up, even if it’s not yours. Because while negative individual impacts can have a harmful effect outdoors, positive individual impacts do just the opposite!

A.Food waste can appeal to animals.

B.Human actions result from attraction behavior.

C.Keeping your food to yourself is the best solution.

D.However, food left outdoors can have unexpected impacts.

E.Here are the measures we should take to prevent food waste.

F.This sort of attraction behavior can quickly become dangerous.

G.Because when it comes to human-animal encounters; animals are often the losers.

  • 23、How to Stay Motivated for the Entire School Year

Every new school year brings the same age-old problem:【1】. What I want to do today is give you four different strategies that you can use to maintain a high level of motivation to do your work, to study diligently all throughout the entire semester.

    Focus on a good start.

From the moment you walk into your very first class this semester,【2】.If you can do this right from the start, you’re going to gain an implicit psychological pressure to keep doing it throughout the entirety of the rest of the semester.

Have a plan for your homework and study time.

If you think about your class time, that is highly regimented. You have a specific place you’re supposed to be and the class is happening at a specific time. 【3】. Maybe at the beginning of every single week, look ahead at your calendar and block out planned spaces of study time.

    【4】.

If you’re realizing that your attention is fragmented or you’ve taken on too many commitments, then it could be a good strategic decision to give up that in order to raise your motivation to tackle the other things on your plate.

Make real fun a priority of the new semester.

You need that cycle of actual rest, which isn’t just sleep, but it’s, you know, respite from your work and actual fun time, and work.【5】.So, make time for real fun this semester and you’re going to find that your motivational reserves maintain themselves throughout the entirety of that semester.

A.make the commitment to sit up front and wring class for all it’s worth.

B.So,apply that logic to your homework and study time.

    C.Learn to avoid some difficulties.

D.your motivation to learn is constantly drained as the semester passes slowly.

E.You need that actual interplay between those two states of being.

F.lack of motivational mantras or mindset hacks to maintain a hardworking attitude.

    G.Know when to quit.

  • 24、   While studying at Jadavpur University, Banerjee wanted to find a creative and socially beneficial alternative to bricks. Along with his classmates, Banerjee created, a social enterprise called Qube in 2017. Its product is the Plastiqube-an alternative brick made from waste plastic.

Banerjee and his team work with waste collectors to gather garbage, including water bottles and abandoned bags. The garbage is then cleaned, cut up and pressed into blocks by hand. “Each Plastiqube brick costs 5 to 6 rupees about 8 cents to makewhile the average clay brick sells for about 10 rupees (14 cents),” Banerjee says. What 's more, unlike traditional bricks, Plastiqubes don' t use any mortar (砂浆). “They are basically like Lego bricks,” explains Banerjee, now aged 22. He adds“There are interlocking designs on the bottom and the top, and they lock between each other.

India is estimated to throw away over 25, 000 tons of plastic waste every day. Around 40% of it is left uncollected. “We’re building something sustainable (可持续的) out of garbage,” Banerjee says. By taking coal and mortar out of the brick making process, Banerjee claims Plastiqubes can reduce energy use by 70 percent, generating a much lower carbon foot-print than traditional bricks.

Each Plastiqube brick contains 1.6 kilograms of waste plastic. They haven't yet been tried out for practical purpose but tests on their fire resistance and long- term steadiness are now in progress. Banerjee believes they will last even longer than traditional clay bricks, while removing waste plastic from the environment for centuries.

Banerjee's innovation has, already won him recognition. He was a regional finalist for the United Nation's 2018 Young Champions of the Earth awards. He is also part of the Yunus and Yunus Global Fellowship. Banerjee will not only encourage young engineers to dream big, but also to think carefully about the environmental impact. “My advice is to start something while keeping a goal that it has to be sustainable in the long term,” he says.

1Why did Banerjee invent Plastiqube ?

A.To reduce the cost of bricks. B.To protect the environment.

C.To control the usage of mortar. D.To raise his company 's reputation.

2Which of the following makes the new bricks join together?

    A.Mortar. B.Lego bricks.

    C.Average clay. D.Interlocking design.

3How does the text describe the characters of Plastiqube?

A.By explaining the process. B.By analyzing some cases.

C.By listing some data. D.By giving examples.

4What can we learn from the text?

A.Banerjee has won lots of national awards.

B.Producing Plastiqube needs little labor force.

C.Plastiqube hasn't been used to build houses.

D.Banerjee likes inspiring teenagers to go for dreams.
