二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The Wall Street Journal recently published an excellent article penned by Wendy Bounds on a hot topic here at MNN: the air-purifying qualities of the common houseplant. Given that the air inside your home can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside of it, making it clean with plants like peace lily(百合花)and asparagus fern(芦笋蕨)is an economical, artistically pleasing alternative to air purifiers. So, it's been acknowledged that a bunch of pretty potted houseplants can help you maintain a healthier home, but a smarter home?

That's the question in light of a recent study published by the Journal of Environmental Psychology showing that the presence of plants in a room, particularly in an office environment, can shrink attention span(范围). Struggling directive attention (the kind of attention that takes effort) can be refreshed through exposure to naturalistic environments. Basically, taking a walk through the park can clear one's head. But can a head be refreshed simply by being surrounded by houseplants?

To test their theory, the study's authors rounded up a bunch of participants, put some of them in a room with no plants and put others in a room with four plants placed around a desk, and put them all to the same series of tests. First was a Reading Span Test, which involves reading a series of sentences aloud and remembering the last word in each sentence. This task requires that you fluently switch between attention demanding tasks: from reading and memorizing at one moment, to writing and recalling at the next. Next came a proof-reading task followed by another Reading Span Test.

The results? Participants working in the room with the plants improved their performance from the first Reading Span Test to the second while those working in the room lacking in greenery did not. Consequently, the benefits of working among plants is indeed evident.

1What do we know from the first paragraph?

A.Staying indoors can help avoid the poorer air outdoors.

B.Houseplants can function as beautiful cheap air purifiers.

C.Planting potted flowers as decorations is very interesting.

D.Air purifiers are the most effective to create a healthy home.

2What does the underlined part in paragraph 2 probably refer to?

    A.Focus one's attention. B.Disturb one's attention.

    C.Weaken one's attention. D.Turn one's attention away.

    3What does the test prove?

A.Working in nature helps increase productivity.

B.Houseplants will be in great demand in our life.

C.Greenery creates healthier naturalistic atmosphere indoors.

D.Working among houseplants improves mental functioning.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Flowers: Grand Feast to Eyes B.Greenery: Effective Air-purifier

C.Houseplants: Visual Brain Food D.Potted Plants: Great House-beautifier

  • 22、Look out, Einstein, a robot wants your job! This robot, named Adam, may be the first non-human to ever independently think up and test hypotheses in order to discover new scientific knowledge. Adam’s discoveries so far have something to do with yeast genetics — not nearly as mind-blowing as Einstein’s theories on relativity, but still impressive when you realize that nobody told Adam which yeast gene to study. “Adam makes up its mind about what to do,” Rose King of Aberyth University in the United Kingdom, the robot’s creator, told CBC News in Canada. “It decides what experiments to do and what to test.”

Of course, Adam’s choices are limited by the information King feeds it and the lab equipment it has access to. The physical robotic system includes robotic arms, a freezer, fans and equipment useful for biological research. Adam also has loads of data on yeast and other organisms.

To decide what to do, Adam finds a place where the yeast genetic data is incomplete, and then searches for complete information about similar genes in other organisms. By comparing all of this data, Adam is able to form a hypothesis and start experimenting. Adam can bring up to 1,000 new experiments each day.

Why Yeast? Biologists use this simple organism as a model for more complex ones, like human cells. So far, Adam has figured out the functions of 12 different yeast genes. When King and his team tested Adam’s results, everything was correct. Eventually, Adam will be able to move beyond yeast as long as King uploads the data necessary for new experiments. King’s team has also built a new robotic scientist named Eve. This robot will screen new drugs for diseases like malaria.

Robotics has been useful in scientific laboratories for a long time, but usually the machines just do the work and deal with data that humans have to sort through. This is the first time a robot has not only designed its own experiment, but determined its own results! Still, modern Einsteins should not worry about being replaced. Robot scientists like Adam are much more likely to be lab assistants rather than brilliant theorists.

【1】Adam is different from other robots mainly because he________.

A.can do experiments on its own

B.can do a better job than Einstein

C.has found new discoveries on relativity

D.is created by a scientist named Rose King

【2】In the future, Adam will be likely to________.

    A.work with other robotic scientists

B.create new drugs for human diseases

    C.experiment with more complex organisms

D.discover the functions of 12 different yeast genes

【3】According to the passage, we can infer that ________.

A.Adam will successfully become a brilliant theorist

B.Adam is the only robotic scientist in the world

C.Adam can not determine its own experiment results

D.Adam can not completely replace the human scientists

  • 23、Last year, the widespread pandemic, COVID-19, struck the globe, for which reason many countries posed lockdown restrictions in some disease-stricken areas.

When her five-year-old daughter, Sophie, was told she had to isolate (隔离) around the Christmas period, Amy Thompson had an innovative idea that would make sure both Sophie, and her seven-year-old brother, Will, were kept entertained.

“I wanted to do something a bit different as it was going to be the first Christmas with no Santa visits or trips to Christmas markets, and I still wanted to give them a really special December.”

Amy, who is an event and wedding planner, wrote down different activities on pieces of paper and put them into an advent calendar for the children to open. Each activity was different and a total surprise.

Movie night with treats, game night, making video calls with their cousins and baking were just some of the activities that they opened on those chilly December mornings that kept them excited for the day ahead.

“We did almost all of them together. Christmas is a time to spend with family but when we couldn’t see our extended family, the kids were quite upset so we tried to make it as special as possible with the advent calendar. Some of the activities we would have done anyway, like watching Christmas movies, but they thought it was a special treat every time they opened an activity because we made a big deal out of it.”

Amy plans to do the same tradition again this year and is already thinking up new exciting activities to add for 2021 that won’t have to be within the lockdown restrictions.

【1】Why did Amy design an advent calendar?

    A.To isolate her kids.

    B.To cheer up her kids.

    C.To make that Christmas different.

D.To defend her kids against the pandemic.

【2】Which of the following best describes Amy?

    A.Considerate and curious.

    B.Caring and ambitious.

    C.Thoughtful and creative.

    D.Enthusiastic and determined.

【3】Which statement is TRUE according to the last 2 paragraphs?

A.For the kids, opening an activity matters more than the activity itself.

B.The kids love their extended family more than their own family.

C.The advent calendar won’t be abandoned until the pandemic is over.

D.The advent calendar must include special activities rather than ordinary ones.

【4】What is the main purpose of the text?

    A.To introduce a Christmas activity——the advent calendar.

B.To encourage people to fight against the pandemic.

    C.To describe and praise a loving mother——Amy.

D.To tell a family story——a special celebration of Christmas.

  • 24、Living downstream from a waste-treatment plant can leave fish tired, a new study finds, led by Graham Scott, a biologist in Canada. “Wastewater treatment plants are pretty good at taking out the waste and treating it before it gets into our waterways,” he said. “But not everything can be taken out,” he added.

For example, some plants beside the stream were not designed to remove remains of drugs. So when some medicines are left over after people use them, they can be released into the environment. These include the drugs used to treat depression and high blood pressure.

Life-sustaining chemical reactions in an animal’s body (including ours) allow it to grow, move and reproduce. These reactions, taken together, are known as the creature’s metabolism (新陈代谢). Some studies have shown that even just one drug can change the metabolism of fish, making their metabolism slow down. Then that will impair their bodies.

That creates a problem for the animals—using the extra energy to rid their bodies of the pollutants which can damage their cells and tissues. “That’s energy they burn just to stay alive,” explained Scott. That is also the energy no longer available to avoid predators (天敌), to find food and to mate.

And they report that fish exposed to a mix of chemicals can use up some of their energy just to deal with those pollutants. Therefore, they will have less energy to eat and avoid being eaten, says Paul Craig, a biologist in Ontario.

“It is up to us to help reduce the types of pollutants in. wastewater,” Craig says. “That includes not throwing leftover medicines down the toilet.” he recommends.

【1】What do Scott’s words mean in paragraph 1?

A.There are still some pollutants in the treated water.

B.Wastewater treatment plants don’t work well.

C.Things in waterways are difficult to deal with.

D.Canadians tend to throw waste down the toilet.

【2】What does the underlined word “impair” mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Form.

    B.Harm.

    C.Benefit.

    D.Examine.

【3】What will happen if fish are exposed to a mix of chemicals?

    A.They will stop growing.

    B.They will avoid their mates.

C.They will have to rid their bodies of the polluted cells.

D.They will consume extra energy to survive.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To explain how pollutants affect animals.

B.To show ways of fighting against pollution.

C.To advise people to stop buying polluted fish.

D.To urge people to reduce pollutants in wastewater.
