  • 21、   An independent college claimed to have become the first school in England to make Chinese a compulsory (强制的) subject for its pupils.

Richard Cairns, the headmaster of Brighton College, said the move aims to recognize the importance of China as the world’s fastest growing economy.

Chinese will become one of the core subjects at the 1,200-pupil college from September. At present the school has only a “handful” of native Chinese students, but it hopes to attract more in the future.

Mr Cairns, who made the announcement in his first week as head of the high-achieving college, said, “One of my key tasks is to make sure that the pupils at Brighton College are equipped for the realities of the 21st century, and one of those realities is that China has the fastest growing economy in the world.

“China has replaced Britain as the world’s fourth-largest economy. We in Britain need to face up to this challenge, see it for the trading opportunity that it is, and ensure that our nation’s children are well-placed to thrive (茁壮成长) in this new global reality.

“A better understanding of the language and culture of China will be hugely important to the advantage of the children of Brighton College.”

Mr Cairns said he hoped the Chinese children already at the college would help and encourage their fellow pupils to learn their language.

In order to lead the way, Mr Cairns, a historian from Oxford, plans to take part in the first Chinese class as a pupil. “I have agreed to join the first Chinese class as a pupil. I think it is the best way for me to show the pupils here how important I regard this new addition to our core subjects.”

  • 22、It is an ancient Chinese tradition to cherish grain. In ancient China, farming promoted the development of civilization so people regarded grain as a God. The ancient people firmly believed that “food is the most important thing for the people”. The earth God “She” and the grain God “Ji” were the earliest gods worshipped by our ancestors and the country was called “Sheji”.

Chinese believe in food conservation. Scholars have strongly advocated that “every single grain is fruit of hard work” and nothing should be wasted. Strong daily practices are associated with “respecting” the grain. Families that run out of rice never leave their container completely empty. There is always a little rice left in it. Parts of the poultry (家禽) and livestock that are unsuitable to be the main dishes are always deliciously cooked.

Food also helps bring people together. In Chinese culture, “Ju” (get together)is a very particular word. There are many ways to get together, but the word “Can” is usually added to it in case of festivals, birthday celebrations, moving to new houses, weddings and funeral. “Ju Can”(get together and have dinner)is an important way for Chinese families to bond.

But these ordinarily frugal (节俭的) people often end up wasting food during “Ju Can”. Some reports show that the annual waste of grain in China is close to 6% of the total grain output, of which, the waste rate of a large party is as high as 38%. The food waste is driven by people’s flamboyant nature-they think the plates must be full and taking away packed food from a party is “disgraceful”. The dishes at a dinner party have become a symbol of a person’s wealth and having too many dishes at the menu has become fashionable, thus promoting waste.

Small to a person, a family, big to a country, the whole human race, to survive, to develop, we have to be frugal. Being frugal does not mean being mean, it simply means one is wise enough not to waste food. If the culture of diligence and frugality is more widespread in all countries, it would provide for a stronger foundation for national security and family happiness.

【1】Why does the author mention “Sheji” in Paragraph 1?

B.The human nature revealed in food waste.

C.How much food Chinese people waste in “Ju Can”.

D.The food waste in “Ju Can” and the reason behind it.

【4】The underlined word “flamboyant” in Paragraph 4 can be understood as .

    A.showy

    B.generous

    C.unique

    D.hardworking

【5】What does the author most likely want to tell us?

A.Farming is crucial to China’s development.

B.Food plays a vital role in bringing people together.

C.We should cherish food and form the habit of frugality.

D.We mustn’t leave the container completely empty in case of tunning out of food.

  • 23、   Does reading depressing information online get you down? Put the phone away for an hour. Or, better yet, make it 24 hours--you might just get $2, 400 out of it.

RVW, a company that tests home services and products, is holding a 24-hour digital detox (脱瘾) challenge. They’ll pay their chosen challengers, who are “definitely into tech”, over $2000 to survive a whole day without screens.

The challenge is not as easy as it sounds. Those selected for the challenge will not only have to swear off their phones for the day, but television, gaming, computers, smart watches and smart home devices are also off-limits. However, the company clarifies, microwaves are still okay.

The challengers will receive safes to store their electronics in for the 24 hours, along with a $200 supermarket gift card to purchase a tech-free “survival kit,” the company wrote. Some survival kit suggestions from the company include a typewriter to replace computers, writing paper to replace texts, and paints and brushes to replace the fine art of the selfie. Challengers will have to review the survival kit and give feedback (反馈) on the experience after completing the challenge.

Screen time is a growing health risk. The company's challenge comes at a time when “screen time” has taken on new meaning. Nowadays, many people are forced to work remotely and students to study online, making screens more of a necessity than ever before. According to a 2019 report, US teens were spending an average of more than seven hours per day on screen media for entertainment alone. “We have a feeling someone out there needs a break,” the company wrote.

To apply, the company requests a bit of personal information and a 100-word question about why you're right for the challenge. Applications will be open until June 26 and winners will be announced on the company's website on June 29.

【1】According to the company, who will be chosen as the ideal challenger?

A.Thomas, who is an expert in home services.

B.Julie, who is a fan of printed newspaper.

C.Jackson, who is heavily in debt.

D.Antonia, who is addicted to online games.

【2】The underlined words “off-limits” can be replaced by ________.

    A.broken

    B.forbidden

    C.limitless

    D.useless

【3】What can be inferred about the survival kit?

A.It is one of the company's products.

    B.It doesn't involve electronics.

C.It is specially designed for artists.

D.It is used to review the experience.

【4】Why did the company hold the challenge?

A.To advocate spending less time on screens.

B.To pay people to work or study offline forever.

C.To make people realize the necessity of screens.

D.To draw people’s attention to health risks.
