二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis; according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.

Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害) , with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.

“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. “It seems particularly cruel,” she says, “that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise, she says. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise.” Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.

In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only important for them, but for all humanity”, said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.

【1】What is the writer mainly concerned about?

    A.The disappearance of languages.

    B.The challenge of climate change.

C.The reaction to the language crisis.

D.The trend of the speedy globalization.

【2】Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?

A.To explain the main reason for language density.

B.To show the common features of endangered languages.

C.To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.

D.To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.

【3】What does the International Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do?

A.Support migrants to access local education.

    B.Discourage people from massive migration.

C.Improve the living conditions of minority groups.

D.Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave

B.Lost for Words: Rising Seas Bring Threat of Catastrophe

C.Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation

D.Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis

  • 22、   Blue Planet II’s latest episode (剧集) focuses on how plastic is having a devastating effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures. Researchers recently also found that sea creatures living in the deepest place on Earth, the Mariana Trench, have plastic in their stomachs. Indeed, the oceans are drowning in plastics.

Though it seems now that the world couldn’t possibly function without plastics, consumer plastics are a remarkably recent invention. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s, the same decade that plastic packaging began gaining in popularity in the United States. This growth has happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pollution research, for instance, is still a very early science.

We put all these plastics into the environment and we still don’t really know what the outcomes are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. Ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, have been found with plastic in their bellies. Ninety percent of seabirds are now eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent.

And it’s not just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming plastics through the seafood we eat. I could understand why some people see ocean plastic as a disaster, worth mentioning in the same breath as climate change. But ocean plastic is not as complicated as climate change. There are no ocean trash deniers (否认者), at least so far. To do something about it, we don’t have to remake our planet energy system.

This is not a problem where we don’t know what the solution is. We know how to pick up garbage. We know how to recycle. We can all start by thinking twice before we use single-use plastic products. Things that may seem ordinary, like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag — taken collectively, really do make a difference.

1Why is plastics pollution research still a very early science?

A.The plastics pollution research is too difficult.

B.Plastics have produced less pollution than coal.

C.The world couldn’t possibly function without plastics.

D.Plastics have gained in popularity too fast for science to catch up.

2The writer gives many numbers in Paragraph 3 to ______.

A.prove the threat of plastic to marine life

    B.explain reasons for plastic pollution

C.describe his own experiences and feelings

D.compare the differences between sea creatures

3What can we infer about climate change?

A.Climate change is caused by human activities.

B.Some people cast some doubts about climate change.

C.Climate change is less important than ocean pollution.

D.Ocean plastic is more complicated than climate change.

4What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Plastic is a global issue arousing wide concern.

B.The oceans have been seriously polluted by plastic.

C.Blue Planet II has left viewers heartbroken.

D.Plastics gain in popularity all over the world.

  • 23、We have heard some interesting ways that 5G wireless technology might change our lives in the future.

5G short for the 5th generation mobile communication technology, promises Internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than current 4G systems. While 5G is set to be used in some limited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected to receive widely available service until 2023.

One project in Britain, however, is already testing this super fast technology on an unlikely group of Internet users—cows. The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems. It also receives money from the British government. Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G connectivity in rural areas around the world.

Testing areas were set up at farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices (装置) that link up to a robotic milking system, which uses sensors (传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process. System designers say technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each individual cow. It then positions equipment to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines release food for the cow as a reward.

Other 5G technology tools include automated brushes that turn on when the cow rubs up against them. Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows’ living areas depending on the weather. And an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always get enough to eat.

Duncan Forbes, head of the project, told Reuters that the project shows the farm’s cow operations can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not just on farms in Britain, but in rural communities across the world.

【1】What is the purpose of Cisco Systems’ program?

A.To win financial support from British government.

B.To test the effects of 5G technology on animals.

C.To promote its technological development in Britain.

D.To expand the future use of 5G in rural communities.

【2】What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.The company.

    B.The project.

    C.The technology.

    D.The group.

【3】What can we learn about 5G according to the text?

A.It is no worse than 4G in terms of speed.

B.It enables cows to control their own milking.

C.It is already widely available in the world.

D.It makes cows eat less and milk more than before.

【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Entertainment.

    B.Lifestyle.

    C.Technology.

    D.Education.

  • 24、Students at Summit Elementary in Butler, Pennsylvania, are growing more than their minds. Under the guidance of longtime teacher Angela Eyth, they’ve created a generous garden to benefit people in need at nearby Broad Street Elementary, whose neighborhood lacks fresh-produce options.

The project is now two years old, and goes beyond planting and growing: Eyth and her fellow educators structure lessons in science, math and more around their garden. “The kids are in charge of everything,” Eyth says. “They’re so proud of what we’re doing here.”

“When we grew cabbage my students noticed something was eating the leaves, ” Eyth recalls. “This led to an investigation into what was eating them and how to stop it: the kids analyzed the evidence they found and acted as engineers in creating various ways to keep pests(害虫) out of the cabbage beds.”

She continues, “People think gardening should be separate from core subjects but it’s far from the truth. The kids’ curiosity keeps it rolling.”

The kids also keep the produce rolling—so much so that with a $70,000 grant from Remake Learning/Grable Foundation, they’re building a farm stand at Broad Street Elementary that will ultimately bring fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and more to an area of their community considered a food desert. People will be able to go there and gain the benefits of the harvest.

This year’s crop included peas, beans, carrots, turnips, squash and pumpkins; plans are in place to keep expanding in the years ahead with items like Christmas trees, a sunflower patch and a pollinator garden. “It’s amazing that you start with a small idea and it can grow,” Eyth says.

【1】What can we know about the community near Broad Street Elementary?

    A.It focuses on students’ growth.

B.It invites Eyth to create a garden.

    C.Its fresh-produce variety is limited.

A.By arranging subjects around the garden.

B.By analyzing the structure of subjects.

C.By deciding what to plant in the garden.

D.By providing them with job opportunities.

A.To experience the work of engineers.

B.To make the evidence more convincing.

C.To find ways to plant vegetables well.

D.To figure out what fed on cabbage leaves.

【4】Which can best describe the students at Summit Elementary in Butler?

    A.Energetic and healthy.

    B.Creative and responsible.

    C.Patient and strong-willed.
