二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Researchers have succeeded in making an Al understand our subjective concept what makes faces attractive. The device(设备)showed this knowledge by its ability to create new photos on its own that were tailored to be found personally attractive to individuals(个人). The results can he used, for example, in modelling preferences and decision-making as well as potentially identifying unconscious attitudes.

Researchers at the University of Helsinki and University of Copenhagen tried to find out whether a computer would be able to identify the facial features we consider attractive and, based on this, create new images matching our criteria. The researchers used artificial intelligence to interpret brain signals and combined the resulting brain-computer interface with productive model of artificial faces. This enabled the computer to create facial images that appealed to individual preferences.

“In our previous studies, we designed models that could identify and control simple photo features, such as hair colour and emotion. However, people largely agree on who is blond and who smiles. Attractiveness is a more challenging subject of study, as it is associated with cultural and psychological factors that likely play unconscious roles in our individual preferences. Indeed, we often find it very hard to explain what it is exactly that makes something, or someone, beautiful”, says Senior Researcher and Docent Michiel Spape from the Department of Psychology and Logopedics, University of Helsinki.

“If this is possible in something that is as personal and subjective as attractiveness, we may also be able to look into other cognitive(认知的)functions such as opinions and decision-making. Potentially, we might make the device fit to identify untrue ideas or prejudice and better understand individual differences,” says Spape.

【1】How does AI prove its ability of identifying beautiful faces?

A.By becoming a tailor to attract individuals.

B.By making new images attractive to people.

C.By making decisions and identifying attractive attitude.

D.By helping people know more about what is attractive.

【2】Why is attractiveness a more challenging task?

A.People have different opinions on beauty.

B.It is hard for AI to know what is beautiful.

C.AI plays a vital role in individual preferences.

    D.Different cultures influence psychological factors.

【3】What can we know from Spape’s words in the last paragraph?

A.The future research may involve cognitive functions.

B.Al knows the standard for personal and subjective attractiveness.

C.People can identify and understand individual differences.

D.Attractiveness can help the researchers make more decisions.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary.

    B.A guidebook.

    C.A novel.

    D.A magazine.

  • 22、Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have found evidence of diverse life forms in the sediment (沉淀物) of an Antarctic sub-glacial lake (南极冰下湖) for the first time. The possibility that extreme life forms might exist in the cold and dark lakes hidden kilometers beneath the Antarctic ice sheet has attracted scientists for decades.

Direct sampling of these lakes from the inside of Antarctica continues to present major technological challenges, however. Recognizing this, scientists from BAS have been searching around the withdrawing edges of the ice sheet for sub-glacial lakes that are becoming exposed for the first time. This is because parts of the ice sheet are melting and withdrawing at such fast rates as the temperature rises at the poles.

The group targeted Lake Hodgson on the Antarctic Peninsula, which was covered by more than 400m of ice at the end of the last Ice Age, but now has a thin covering of just three to four meters of ice.

The lake was thought to be a severe environment for any form of life, but the layers of mud at the bottom of the lake represent a time capsule storing the DNA of the microbes (微生物), which have lived there for thousands of years. The scientists took samples of the mud from the bottom of the lake. The top few centimeters of the mud contained current and recent creatures which live in the lake, but once the samples reached 3.2m deep, the microbes most likely date back to nearly 100, 000 years ago.

“We were surprised at the high biomass (生物量) and diversity. This is the first time microbes have been identified living in the sediment of an Antarctic sub-glacial lake,” leading author David Pearce says. “And it indicates that life can exist in environments we would consider too extreme. The fact that these creatures have survived in such a unique environment could mean they have developed in such unique ways, which would be exciting discoveries for us. This is the early stage and we now need to do more work to further investigate these life forms.”

【1】What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A.All parts of the ice sheet are melting and withdrawing at fast rates.

B.There are major difficulties in taking direct samples of life in the lakes.

C.That extreme life forms exist near the surface of the lake has attracted scientists.

D.Scientists have first discovered the edges of the ice sheet of the sub-glacial lake.

【2】Why did scientists choose Lake Hodgson to do the research project?

A.They found mud layers with microbes at the bottom.

B.It is regarded as a very difficult environment to live in.

C.It has much more varieties of life forms.

D.Its covering of ice is now very thin.

【3】What can be inferred from the microbes at the bottom of the Antarctic sub-glacial lake?

A.The scientists don’t fully know how the microbes have developed.

B.With the temperature rising quickly, the microbes will no longer exist.

C.The top few centimeters of the mud contained the DNA of the ancient microbes.

D.The microbes living deep have proved to date back to about 100, 000 years ago.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Scientists have been searching for diverse life forms in an Antarctic sub-glacial lake.

B.Scientists have discovered life in the sediment of an Antarctic sub-glacial lake.

C.Scientists want to prove that life can exist in extremely bad conditions.

D.Scientists will further investigate creatures in the layers of mud.

  • 23、   Taking breaks while studying contributes to better learning in a number of ways, and creates a major impact on the process of learning. Find out why a study break is essential, and how it helps you score the best.

Scientists conclude that the brain stops registering a constant stimulation over a gradual period of time, and declares it to be unimportant. The brain decodes(译)a monotonous(单调的)activity and gets habituated to it, no longer stimulating the brain to act in any way. Once this happens, you find yourself unable to concentrate, there by destroying the purpose of a study session-learning. A “break” does just that, it breaks the monotony for the brain. A change in place, a walk around the block, a cup of coffee; these little things can be limited in your study sessions to relax the mind, break the monotony, improve concentration levels, and finally assist the learning process.

The purpose of a study session is to study as much as possible and remember most of what has been learned in it. To be able to achieve this, it is absolutely necessary to continuously stay focused. It is highly likely that long hours of studying can become monotonous and cause you to believe that you are “learning”, when you are only just “reading”. A short rest eases out your stressed mind, brings you back on track, and allows you to start studying with new-found focus levels.

With a relaxed mind, improved concentration and focus levels, and a better capacity to retain information, it is obvious that your study session with breaks will turn out to be more productive, and you will get more benefits than you previously did. Put more such better-yielding study sessions together, and what do you get? perfect grades and a winner of the “race”.

1What can the underlined word “habituated” in the second paragraph be replaced by?

    A.Accustomed. B.Absorbed.

    C.Attached. D.Related.

2What should students do to study as much as possible?

    A.Help each other. B.Remain concentrated.

C.Improve ways of learning. D.Give up the learning process.

3If you have a good attitude to study, how your study will be?

    A.Efficient. B.Improved. C.Interesting. D.Easy.

4What can be concluded from the passage?

A.Students should concentrate on their study.

B.Students should take breaks after learning for long hours.

C.Teachers had better have a good rest before their lessons.

D.Teachers had better be strict with their students in learning ways.

  • 24、A recent story in the Wall Street Journal newspaper looked at students who went to celebrated universities such as Columbia and New York University, for advanced degrees in subjects like art, film and even social work. Many of the students said they learned a lot. However, when they graduated, they were deep in debt and did not think they would find work that would let them pay back their loans.

Students said they spoke with Columbia about the high cost of advanced arts degrees but never received a reasonable answer. Education experts say the school is very wealthy, with large funds. The University, however, prefers to ask the students to pay the full cost.

Kevin Carey is a higher education expert for New America, a public policy research center. He called master’s degrees “a scam” in a conversation. “Charging people a ton of money to go into any artistic career is often super problematic,” he said.

Castillo is an actor in New York City. He earned an MFA from The Actors Studio in New York City. Was his MFA worth the cost? “I do think it was worth it. I don’t put a price tag on my education or my experience. I think it’s sort of unfortunate that so many people take education for granted.” Castillo said students who are thinking about an advanced degree in art should be sure they are doing it because they value the education, not because they want money or to be famous.

Plazinska is a filmmaker in New York City. She attended graduate school both at Baylor University in Texas and at the University of Lowa. Arts graduate programs can help students meet and make friends with fellow artists with whom they can work throughout their careers. For school to be of value, students need to remember why they started making art in the beginning. “It’s just for the pure pleasure of creating and fulfilling myself this way.”

【1】What’s the problem for students in famous universities for art advanced degrees?

    A.They can’t take loans.

    B.They can’t find any work.

C.They may be heavily in debt.

D.They may drop out of university.

【2】What does the underlined word “scam” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Way.

    B.Trick.

    C.Skill.

    D.Game.

【3】What does Castillo think of his MFA?

    A.He thinks highly of it.

    B.It’s a waste of money.

    C.He takes it for granted.

D.It brings him fame and money.

【4】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.Arts graduate programs ensure a promising future.

B.Students had better consider whether they can afford the fee.

C.Arts graduate programs introduce celebrity artists to their students.

D.Students should stick to their original purposes while learning.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last April, Taylor got an unusual package in the mail. The postman carried the box to the door and handed it to Taylor directly. The box was peeping!

“What have you got there?” asked the postman.

“These are my chicks,” said Taylor.

The box was full of six small, fluffy chicks. They were each just one day old. When Taylor opened the box, the peeping got louder. Carefully, Taylor held one yellow chick in his hand. The chick was quiet and then closed its eyes to sleep. Taylor placed it gently under the heat light so it would stay warm. Taylor did this for each chick, and soon they were all sleeping together in their special box.

Taylor kept the chicks in his bedroom with the heat lamp running all day and all night. He would watch the chicks for hours when his homework was finished. Soon the chicks learned to peck at each other and to jump up and down. They also began to grow feathers, first on their wings and then on their tails. When all of their fluff was gone and their feathers in place, it was time to move the chicks to the hen house outside.

The hen house had three doors. There was a small door at the top of a slide that was just for the chickens. There was a big door in the back that was for people. Taylor used this door when he cleaned the hen house or filled the chickens’ food and water dishes. There was also a small door on the side of the hen house that led to the nesting boxes. These were small boxes that the chickens could sit in to lay their eggs. The special door would make it easy for Taylor to pick up the eggs without disturbing the hens.

Taylor checked the nesting boxes every day. Many times he saw the chickens sitting in the boxes, but there were no eggs. It would be many months before the chickens were old enough to lay eggs. Taylor was getting impatient. But his mother always taught him the importance of being patient, so he decided to wait.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
