21、At first glance, l5-year-old Kenan Pala seems like a typical high school student. He runs cross-country and plays video games with his friends. But he founded Kids4Community, a San Diego-based nonprofit organization that offers volunteer projects and encourages kids to participate, when he was just 12 years old.
The idea for Kids4Community came out of his family’s experience. Pala’s parents came to the US from Turkey in 1998 and founded Confirm BioSciences, a company that produces and delivers drug-testing kits. Their journey was filled with hardship, but the kindness of others, in the forms of both emotional and financial support, left an unforgettable mark.
“We started with very little money in our journey here, but we got so much help along the way and we’ve always felt very grateful,” said Zeynep Ilgaz, Pala’s mother. “If it wasn’t for the help we got along the way, we would not be here today where we are.” The Palas wanted to instill (灌输) this lesson in their children, so they encouraged them to give back to the community. Pala said, “My parents really wanted me to understand how lucky I was to have the life I had and they did that in having me give back while I was growing up.”
Pala’s organization aims to boost young people’s involvement in community efforts because many organizations don’t let children volunteer. Now, Kids4Community regularly organizes initiatives (新方案) to help people who are homeless, including the dinner service at homeless shelters and this year’ s Christmas gift bag drive. In addition to meeting physical needs, the initiatives are designed to give people a sense of dignity and hope.

23、A company has designed a water bottle, the Memobottle, which is ideal for the office worker’s bag, because it’s completely flat. With the same shape as a piece of paper, the Memobottle is a reusable water bottle that slides into your bag to lie next to books and laptops. The bottle, which can also be washed in a dishwasher, is designed to help reduce the number of plastic bottles in landfills(填埋).
Two creative people Jesse Leeworthy and Jonathan Byrt, both 28,designed the bottle to be convenient to carry and environmentally friendly. It is made from a durable and dishwasher-friendly“green” plastic.
Leeworthy and Byrt, from Australia, say more than 600 billion single-use bottles were sold globally last year. In America alone, studies show that around 1,500 single-use water bottle are consumed every second—only 20 percent of these are recycled. And the cost of buying more and more plastic bottles adds to— the pair say that bottled water costs approximately 1,400 times more than tap water.
“We’ve always been passionate about the environment,” said Leeworthy.“For years we have been focused on creative design that provides environmental remedy while improving social convenience. The Memobottle was designed to overcome two problems that we see in our society: our attachment to the outdoors, and our inability to fit water bottles in laptop bags.”
The bottle will be available in three different sizes— A5 which holds 750 ml,A4 which holds 1.25 litres and letter size which stores 1.25 litres. The product is seeking funding on Kickstarter and has already soared(飙升)past its primary goal of raising £8,310 ($13,500),reaching it in just 36 hours. Jonathan Byrt said, “The feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive! The emails of support and interest, and social media comments have been amazing!”
The product is expected to be on the market by Christmas and will be available for global delivery.

24、We often hear friends ask why they should read fiction. There is so much to learn from history, from what is going on at the frontiers of science, and from contemporary studies of human behavior. Why should they spend their scarce "free time" reading fiction, the purpose of which, at best, is only entertainment?
We are disappointed about such comments. Yes, we respond, we do find pleasure in reading fiction. But we also learn much about how to best live our lives in ways that can only be captured by fiction. We recognize that some novels are entertaining, but leave no lasting impression. What makes a novel more than entertainment?
Our answer is that we don't just read great books - they read us as well. The human condition is complex and contradictory, layered like an ice-cream dessert, with flavors mixed among the layers. A great novel reflects that complexity. We may read it several times, as we do with our favorites, and each time it is like finding an old friend and gaining new insights from that friend. We put it down with new understandings of the world around us and, most important, of ourselves.
Let's look at the novel Frankenstein, written in 1818 by Mary Shelley. Frankenstein is not the monster, but a young man seeking out the secrets of the universe. He collects body parts and charges it with life. When the dull yellow eyes open, however, Frankenstein, shocked by what he has done, abandons the creature, which ultimately kills Frankenstein's brother, his bride, and his best friend.
On one level, Frankenstein is entertaining - a good horror story, though a little dated. But Shelley writes more than just that. On a deeper level, her book forces us to ask whether humans reach too far to gain knowledge that is as forbidden as the fruit of the Garden of Eden. This theme, as old as the legend of Prometheus (普罗米修斯),dominates Frankenstein. Shelley, of course, knew nothing of genetic (遗传的)engineering that happens today. She was deeply troubled by what human beings might discover about themselves, and the effects of those discoveries on society. Our reading of great literature can also be enriched by understanding the author's personal interests and anxieties.
【1】How does the author feel about fiction reading?
A.It is a window to a whole new world.
B.It helps us discover the frontiers of science.
C.It offers insight into how to live best lives.
D.It holds some clues to understanding our memory.
【2】Why does the author say great books read us as well?
A.Because they deserve reading several times.
B.Because they lead us to a rich and colorful life.
C.Because they explore humans' complex reality.
D.Because they improve the writer-reader relationship.
【3】What do we know about the novel Frankenstein!
A.It is based on a grand theme.
B.It is a record of a historic event.
C.It is merely a great horror story.
D.It is about the legend of Prometheus.
【4】What is the best title of the text?
A.Why should we read fiction?
B.Can novel reading last long?
C.Read for fun or read for none?
D.Is Frankenstein really entertaining?
