  • 22、   Alysa Liu is an ice skater. In 2016, the then 10-year-old girl became the youngest intermediate figure skating (花样滑冰)champion in U.S. history. In 2018, Liu became the youngest to compete in and win the U.S. junior championships.

In January, 2019, she made history again at the Geico U.S. Women's Figure Skating Championships. At the championships, things were initially going well for the defending U.S. champion Bradie Tennell. But later Tennell had a falling in her performance. Meanwhile, Liu became the first and youngest U.S. woman to land three triple axels (三周半跳)in competition.

Though Liu made them look, easy, triple axels are extremely challenging. The skater has to jump from the outside edge of one skate, turning in the air. "Double" or “triple" refers to the number of rotations (旋转)the skater completes before landing. The term is a little misleading given that the skater has to do an extra half rotation, meaning that for a triple, the skater is actually completing 3.5 rotations. To be successful, the skater has to have both incredible body strength and control.

When asked about her great performance, Liu thought it was not worth showing off. And she was enthusiastic about preparing for bigger games. But Liu was ineligible to compete at the 2019 World Figure Skating Championships in Japan due to the minimum age requirement of 15. However, that didn't bother her.

Liu fell in love with ice skating during her first lesson at a center. She showed such talent that Laura Lipetsky, who was teaching the group lessons, asked her father to let her receive private lessons. Lipetsky said, “She wanted to learn, and I wanted to guide." The two have been inseparable since then. In 2017 Laura sent Liu to the University of Delaware for a certain analysis that researchers have created to help outstanding American skaters improve their jump techniques.

Liu has been homeschooled since the age of 10. She gets her homework done between daily practices, and usually eats dinner in the car on her way home. Though that might appear to be a lot for someone so young, Liu takes it happily.

【1】What achievement did Alysa make at the age of 13?

A.She won the U.S. junior championships.

B.She was allowed to compete in the 2019 championships in Japan.

C.She became an intermediate figure skating champion.

D.She defeated the defending U.S. champion Bradie Tennell.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The requirements for figure skating.

B.The difficulty of carrying out triple axels.

C.The skills needed in skating rotations.

D.The differences between double axels and triple axels.

【3】What does the underlined word "ineligible" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Lacking time.

    B.Lacking confidence.

    C.Having no qualification.

    D.Showing little enthusiasm.

【4】What can we learn about Laura Lipetsky?

A.She was good at teaching group lessons.

B.She instructed Liu's father in figure skating.

C.She made a contribution in Liu's progress in sports.

D.She obtained great support from Liu and her father.

  • 23、We’ve all heard the saying“Life slows down the older you get,” but that's certainly not true for Joan MacDonald.

The 75-year-old fitness influencer has accumulated an incredible following on social media, in part because she's chosen to actively reject the idea that aging robs you of your energy, focus and drive. In fact, MacDonald looks at movement as a “gift, ” and whether you're hitting the gym five days a week, or just beginning your fitness journey 一 it's never too late to take advantage of what your body was meant to do. Get moving.

“Just start with what you can, ” MacDonald tells Guideposts, org when asked what her best piece of advice would be for seniors looking to get active again.“If you can only walk three blocks, start there. Over time aim to add another block.”

And just because you' re starting small, it doesn’t' t mean that a short bike ride or quick stretch session isn't having an impact. The recommended amount of cardio (有氧运动)each day for most adults is 30 minutes, although even short bursts of movement can have a huge impact on decreasing the risk of being overweight, heart problems and other conditions.

The key is consistency. MacDonald knows that the road to healthy isn't easy and sometimes, the struggle can seem impossible to overcome. She had to battle against years of bad habits and recondition her body to push against her imagined limits. She tries to keep her social media channels focused on the positive aspects of working out and eating better, always encouraging and uplifting her followers, and never judging their difficulties 一 or her own. It's that attitude that she says is key to staying active.

“Focus on what is going right and well,” MacDonald says. “For me, I started my whole transformation because I wanted to feel better. I wanted energy to live my life! Now having my health, strength, and endurance is what keeps me committed.”

【1】What may contribute to MacDonald , shaving numerous followers on social media?

    A.Her attitude.

    B.Her impact.

    C.Her strength.

    D.Her journey.

【2】What does MacDonald suggest to the seniors?

A.They take advantage of what they want.

B.They start working out with what they can.

C.They get moving by doing what they need.

D.They perform short movement as they like.

【3】What difficulties does MacDonald overcome in her fitness journey?

A.Inspiring the followers and evaluating their troubles.

B.Holding positive attitudes and keeping a balanced diet.

C.Managing the social media channels and gaining views.

D.Breaking bad habits and challenging herself to the limit.

【4】What lesson can we learn from Joan MacDonald?

    A.Prevention is better than cure.

    B.A light heart lives long.

C.The nature of life lies in sports.

    D.Content is better than riches.

  • 24、   Russell Jones was left unable to walk without limping(瘸着走) after breaking his ankle in an accident last year. One day, while out on a walk with his dog Billy, Russell noticed that the animal was limping as well. On another occasion, as he was limping around the house, his wife Michelle noticed that Billy was sort of copying him, so they called a vet to have the dog checked out.

“Because of social distancing, he walked in to the vets normally. I paid around £300 for X-rays and checkups there. But when he came out they said they couldn’t find anything wrong with him. Then again he started limping, so Michelle filmed it,” Jones told ITV’s This Morning.

The London-based couple became even more suspicious after seeing the eight-year-old Billy running very fast around the garden when Russell wasn’t around. A video of Russell and Billy both limping during a walk has spread quickly on social media, with many viewers expressing their amazement at the dog’s acting skills.

“He’s copying you. That’s brilliant! He is only limping out of sympathy for him,” one person commented. “He’s come out in sympathy with you! Quick recovery to both of you,” someone else wrote.

Some have expressed doubt that Billy was just imitating(模仿) his human master, and claimed that there might have been something wrong with his foot that the X-ray didn’t catch. Most followers, however, posted the ideas close to the above two, viewing it as a way a dog expresses affection. A 2011 study found evidence of “automatic imitation” in dogs. Scientists found that dogs will imitate their owners even when it is not in their best interest to do so.

【1】Why did the couple take their dog to the vet?

    A.It was sick.

    B.It was unable to walk.

    C.It had its ankle broken.

    D.It was limping occasionally.

【2】What was the dog like when Russell was not in sight?

    A.Back to normal.

    B.Still and calm.

    C.Excited and upset.

    D.Full of energy.

【3】What’s the opinion of most people online about the dog’s action?

A.There is automatic imitation in the dog.

    B.The dog was showing sympathy.

C.There is something wrong with the dog’s leg.

D.The dog tends to do things in its best interest.

【4】In which tone does the author write the story?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Critical.

    D.Fun.
