  • 22、   The year 2020 marks the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”, as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75. One might therefore expect peak retirement for baby-boomers born in 1955-60 in the coming years, but they are not retiring quietly into the background. By continuing to work, and staying socially involved, the yold will change the world, as they have done several times before at different stages of their lives.

The yold are healthier, wealthier and more numerous (众多) than previous generations of seniors. 134million 65-to-74-year-olds account for 11% of the population in rich countries in 2020, up from 99million (8%) in 2000. Health worsens with age, but the yold are resisting the decline better than most: of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy in rich countries between 2000 and 2015. The yold are also better off: between 1989 and 2013, the median (中位的) wealth of families headed by someone over 62 in America rose by 40% , while the wealth of all other age groups declined.

The yold are not just any group of old people. The over-60s are one of the fastest-growing groups of customers of the airline business. They are also changing education. They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as people who wear slippers and look after the grandchildren. That will affect consumer, service and financial markets.

The rise of the yold will be a blessing to themselves, to economies and to societies. But for all this to happen, three big things will have to change. The most important is public attitudes towards older people, and in particular the expectation that 60-somethings ought to be putting their feet up and quietly retiring into the background. Government policies will have to change, too. The retirement age in many rich countries is still below the age to which many people want to work. Public policy makes retirement a cliff edge instead of a ramp (斜坡). Third, higher numbers of healthy yold people will require great changes in health spending although the yold will still be comparative healthy and active over the next decade.

1Why will the yold not retire quietly into the background?

A.They have a longer life expectancy.

B.They are richer than the other age groups.

    C.They have an increasing population.

D.They can still play a vital role in society.

2What are the yold usually expected to do after retirement?

A.To stay at home babysitting grandchildren.

B.To get further education in universities.

C.To travel all over the world by plane.

D.To stay socially engaged in the company.

3What can be done to ensure the position of the yold?

    A.Bringing forward their retirement age.

    B.Being age-friendly towards them.

C.Reducing their cost in health care.

D.Taking good care of them at home.

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Three effective measures should be taken for the yold.

B.People hold different opinions over the yold’s retirement.

C.The yold continue to make a big difference to society.

D.The baby-boomers are changing our society nowadays.

  • 23、This summer we witnessed interview teams at the North Pole wearing short sleeve shirts due to the warm weather. A study published on Aug 29 revealed more concerning issues in the supposedly coldest area of the world. Zombie ice from a massive Greenland ice sheet was confirmed to be melting, which would eventually raise global sea levels by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, reported Associated Press (AP).

Zombie ice is the kind of ice that is still attached to thicker areas of ice, but is no longer getting fed by larger glaciers. Since glaciers are getting less snow to complement the amount of ice melted, once the zombie ice is melted, it cannot be re-formed.

Scientists decided to look at the balance of the ice. In perfect equilibrium (平衡), snow in the mountains of Greenland flows down and thickens the sides of glaciers, balancing out what’s melting on the edges, according to AP. But in the last few decades, there is less refill and more melting, creating an imbalance.

Study co-author William Colgan told AP that 3.3 percent of Greenland’s total ice volume will melt eventually. “Starving would be a good phrase for what’s happening to the ice”, Colgan added.

With a great number of natural resources buried under the earth, areas of melted ice revealed treasures that attracted the world’s richest men. According to CNN, in early August, there was a “treasure hunt” in Greenland. Billionaires, including Bill Gates and others, financially backed KoBold Metals, a US-based mineral exploration company, to explore the rare metals under the glaciers in Greenland. The company told CNN that since there were enough minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles, the critical resource is capable of powering the green energy transition. While investors are taking advantage of global warming, experts feared that the mineral exploration is likely to worsen the local environment, draining up the world’s resources at a faster rate.

【1】According to the text, what can we infer about zombie ice?

    A.It’s complemented by nearby glaciers.

B.It will melt away from the ice cap.

    C.It’s independent from large glaciers.

D.It has increased by up to 10 inches.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Why more zombie ice can’t be created.

B.How zombie ice is usually formed.

C.What the melting of zombie ice can lead to.

D.How zombie ice functions in the ecosystem.

【3】What is implied in the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?

A.The ice has brought about starvation.

B.The ice is refilled more than before.

C.The ice is becoming gradually thinner.

D.The ice has been good to skate on.

【4】How did the experts feel about the “treasure hunt” in Greenland?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Tolerant.

    C.Indifferent.

    D.Worried.

  • 24、   “New and improved. “These words are put in so many marketing campaigns that we tend to accept them as linked. But many new drugs aren’t an improvement over the best existing drug for a given condition, and the fast drug-approval processes in recent years have added to the uncertainty about their advantages.

A recent report in the British Medical Journal, “New Drugs: Where Did We Go Wrong and What Can We Do Better? “Analyzed the issue. The authors looked at 216 drugs approved between 2011 and 2017:152 were newly developed, and 64 were existing medicine approved for new uses. Only 25%offered a major advantage over the established treatment, and fully 58%had no confirmed added benefit to reduce symptoms or improve health-related quality of life.

“This doesn’t mean there’s no added benefit, “lead author Wissler said. “It just means we have no positive proof. Either we have no studies or have studies not good enough. “Wissler and her co-authors work for a German institute which evaluates new treatments and advises on whether the country’s health care system should pay a premium(补贴)for them. Such organizations, known as health technology assessment(HTA)agencies, work a little differently in the US, says Sean Tunisia researcher in Baltimore: “If payers think a new drug isn’t better than an existing drug, these agencies will require that hospitals try the cheaper drug first.”

Germanys HTA demands trials to prove that a new treatment beats the existing standard. This isn’t always practical. For one thing, such studies can be expensive and time-consuming, with no guarantee of success. Secondly, it can discourage companies from attempting to develop new alternatives. This is already happening. Drug developers are increasingly focused on areas where there are no good treatments to compete with, such as rare diseases.

This lack of meaningful data to guide patients is a major point of Wissler’s paper. With accelerated approval, there are more products approved, with a greater amount of uncertainty about risks and benefits. But there are other solutions besides drug trials. One idea is to require postmarked studies to track the effectiveness of newly approved drugs—a step too often neglected.

1What message does the recent report convey?

A.Improved drugs have advantages over old ones.

B.Many new drugs have no improved advantages.

C.Before 2017 no improvement was made to drugs.

D.The approval processes for new drugs are too fast.

2What will US HTA agencies do when no advantage is found in new drugs?

A.Get hospitals to use the cheaper drugs.

    B.Remove government premium on them.

C.Arrange financial support for the patients.

D.Put new drugs on further trials and studies.

3What’s the disadvantage of Germany’s HTA trial demands?

A.Getting patients to depend on the government for support.

B.Making drug companies think of illegal ways to cut cost.

C.Holding companies back from improving existing drugs.

D.Pushing companies to try alternatives for existing drugs.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.The Advantage of Existing Drugs

B.A Dilemma with New Drug Alternatives

C.Misunderstanding of New and Old Drugs

D.People’s Preference for New or Old Drug

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a warm summer morning. I had just finished reading the grocery specials in the paper. I didn’t really need anything for the next few days. Nothing stuck out as a particularly good deal except the bonus chicken packs.

Five minutes later I headed to the store on my bike: helmet on my head, old pack on my back, and five bucks in my pocket. The temperature seemed to have gone up a little. I locked up my bike and went in. I headed straight back to the meat counter. I grabbed a package weighing slightly over ten pounds, and then headed for the checkout.

“Paper or plastic,” the clerk asked. She gave me a whole lot of change for so much meat and slipped the family pack into a sack, with most of it sticking out the top.

I headed outside, pleased with my purchase and with visions of fried chicken and chicken and rice in my head. Reality set in when the air hit my face. Not warm air, but really hot air. I realized I didn’t have the car, so the chicken would be riding on my back.

Actually, the partially frozen chicken felt cold against my back. In my head I began to count the number of stop signs left before I got home. The signal light turned yellow so I stopped.

For a moment at the signal, it was quiet. Then I heard a woman start screaming. The light turned green but the cars didn’t move. Maybe there had been an accident? I looked behind me even though I never heard any cars’ crunch.

What I saw was a small herd of people coming up the road towards me. There was a man in a suit, a woman with a beach towel, and a few others. I heard someone yell, ‘I’m a nurse. " I looked around again and still, no visible accident. Moving faster, this herd of folks started talking loudly in my direction.

“Were you in an accident” Are you alright?” Who are they talking to, I wondered?

I had no idea what was wrong. I was puzzled!

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

“Look, you are bleeding! Why don’t you get off your bike and take off your backpack?”
