二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Are you still frustrated for forgetting passwords? Never again! There’s a way to choose and remember them with confidence.

【1】 It’s good exercise for your brain and a valuable way to protect your identity online. The system uses letters, numbers and symbols, so it will please even the strictest website. And the random-looking codes it produces would be extremely difficult for someone to crack, but just enough of a challenge for your brain.

First, choose a short quotation, one that no one would have any reason to associate with you. 【2】 So, if you chose “Play it again, Sam”, you’d have the letters PIAS. Next, choose a meaningful date again, one that can’t be guessed or easily researched. Maybe the year of a favorite holiday, “86,” say. 【3】 Finally, organize these building blocks in any order you like. And strengthen the code further by making some of the letters lower case and some upper: maybe 86&EPiAs.

Spend a little time getting to know this “foundation” for your passwords. “See” it in your mind’s eye. And then start using it as the basis for every new password you set. Add two or three extra letters each time, a few initials or abbreviations (缩写) to remind you of what this particular password is for. 【4】

So the final password for your BBC account could be: BBC86&EPiAs.

【5】 But each password ends up being complex and unique, helping to protect your identity and giving your memory a cracking workout every time.

    A.Nothing is better than this.

B.What you should do is to follow a system.

C.We can remember them well if we often use the letters.

D.With a system like this, you’ve got a basic formula to follow.

E.Then add a random element by picking any two symbols like & and E.

F.Pick out the initial letters-creating the first “building block” for your passwords.

G.For example, you might use BT for your phone account or CC for the camera club forum.

  • 22、   When we talk about Americans barely into adulthood who are saddled with(担负着) unbearable levels of debt’ the conversation is almost always about student loan debt. But there’s a growing body of evidence suggesting that today’s young adults are also drowning in credit-card debt and that many of them will take this debt to their graves(坟墓).

More than 20% overspent their income by more than $ 100 every single month. Since they haven’t built up their credit histories yet, it's a safe bet that these young adults are paying relatively high interest rates on the resulting credit card debt.

Although many young people blame "socializing" as a barrier to saving money, most of them aren’t purchasing $ 20 drinks in trendy bars. They’re struggling with much more daily financial demands.

To a disturbingly large extent, the young and the broke are relying on credit cards to make it until their next payday. This obviously isn’t permanent in the long run, and it’s going to put a huge drag on their spending power even after they reach their peak earning years, because they’ll still be paying interest on that bottle of orange juice or box of spaghetti (意式面条)they bought a decade earlier.

A new study out of Ohio State University found that young adults are accumulating credit card debt at a more rapid rate than other age groups, and that they're slower at paying it off. "If what we found continues to hold true, we may have more elderly people with substantial financial problems in the future’" warns Lucia Dunn, professor of economics at Ohio State. "If our findings persist, we may be faced with a financial crisis among elderly people who can’t pay off their credit cards."

Dunn says a lot of these young people are never going to get out from under their credit card debt. "Many people are borrowing on credit cards so heavily that payoff rates at these levels are not plenty to recover their credit card debt by the end of their life which could have loss impacts for the credit card issuing banks,"

1What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

    A. Many young Americans will never be able to pay off their debts.

    B. Credit cards play an increasingly important role in college life.

    C. Credit cards are doing more harm than student loans.

    D. The American credit card system is under criticism.

2Why do young people have to pay a higher interest on their credit card debt?

    A. They tend to forget about the deadlines.

    B. They haven't developed a credit history.

    C. They are often unable to pay back in time.

    D. They are inexperienced in managing money.

3What is said to be the consequence of young adults relying on credit cards to make ends meet?

    A. It will place an unnecessary burden on society.

    B. It will give them no motivation to work hard.

    C. It will exert psychological pressure on them.

    D. It will affect their future spending power.

4What will happen to young adults if their credit card debt keeps accumulating according to Lucia Dunn?

    A. They will have to pay an increasingly higher interest rate.

    B. They may experience a financial crisis in their old age.

    C. Their quality of life will be affected.

    D. Their credit cards may be cancelled.

5What does Lucia Dunn think might be a risk for the credit card issuing banks?

    A. They go bankrupt as a result of over-lending.

    B. They lose large numbers of their regular clients.

    C. Their clients leave their debts unpaid upon death.

    D. Their interest rates have to be reduced now and then.

  • 23、Chinese female scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in medicine on October 5 for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria(疟疾). This is the first Nobel Prize given to a Chinese scientist for work carried out within China.

Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan, who were honored for their revolutionary anti-roundworm treatment. 84-year-old Tu is awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria, reducing patients’ suffering and promoting mankind’s health. Although she received several medical awards in the past, the 2015 Nobel Prize is definitely the most privilege reward that recognizes Tu’s dedication and perseverance in discovering artemisinin(青蒿素), the key drug that battles malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫).

However, her route to the honor has been anything but traditional. She won the Nobel Prize for medicine, but she doesn’t have a medical degree or a PhD. In China, she is even being called the “three-noes” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas. No wonder her success has stirred China’s national pride and helped promote confidence of native Chinese scientists.

The fact that Tu has none of these three backgrounds reminds us that science should be more accessible to all. One shall be able to become a scientist no matter what kind of background he or she comes from, as long as one dives into scientific research. There have been discussions on people who really love science but are never able to achieve much during their whole life. Their contributions can never be ignored. They work so hard to prove the wrong way so that the future researchers will be closer to the right one.

As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tu’s record-breaking winning also serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. Tu spent decades on scientific research before its value is officially acknowledged. There is no way to measure how much one devotes to science and compare it with how much reward he or she may get.

【1It can be concluded from the text that __________.

    A. Tu worked home and abroad to conduct her research

    B. Tu got the Nobel Prize for her anti-roundworm treatment

    C. The Nobel Prize is the first award to recognize her work

    D. Her discovery of artemisinin has helped to cut Malaria death rate

【2The author seems to agree that a person who is more likely to become a scientist is the one with__________.

    A. a sense of national pride

    B. relevant academic knowledge

    C. enthusiasm for scientific research

    D. a desire to achieve success

【3In writing the passage, the author intends to ___________.

    A. remind readers of the principles of scientific research

    B. discourage the pursuit of instant success in science

    C. inform readers of the news and make comments

    D. praise the award winner and encourage scientific research

  • 24、   They say a cat has nine lives, and I think that possible since I am now living my third life and I’m not even a cat. My father died when I was 15, and we had a hard struggle to make a living. And my mother, who was seriously ill in her last years, died while still in her 60s. My sister married soon after, and I followed her example within the year.

This was when I began to enjoy my first life. I was very happy, in excellent health. I had a good job in San Jose and a beautiful home up the peninsula in San Carlos. Life was a pleasant dream. Then the dream ended. I became afflicted(使苦恼) with a slowly progressive disease of the motor nerves, affecting first my right arm and leg, and then my other side. Thus began my second life...

In spite of my disease I still drove to and from work each day, with the aid of special equipment installed in my car. And I managed to keep my health and optimism, to a degree, because of 14 steps. Crazy? Not at all. Our home was an affair with 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door. Those steps were a standard measure of life. They were my yardstick, my challenge to continue living. I felt that if the day arrived when I was unable to lift one foot up one step and then drag the other painfully after it-repeating the process 14 times, I would be through-I could then admit defeat and lie down and die.

Then on a dark night in August, 1971, I began my third life. It was raining when I started home that night; strong winds and slashing rain beat down on the car as I drove slowly down one of the less-traveled roads. Suddenly the steering wheel jerked(猝然一动). In the same instant I heard the bang of a blowout. It was impossible for me to change that tire! Utterly impossible!

I started the engine and thumped(砰然地响) slowly along until I came to the dirt road, where I turned in and where I found lighted windows welcomed me to a house and pulled into the driveway and blared the horn.

The door opened and a little girl stood there. When she knew what happened to me, she went into the house and a moment later came out, followed by a man who called a cheerful greeting. I sat there comfortable and dry, and felt a bit sorry for the man and the little girl working so hard in the storm.

About an hour later, the man’s voice was heard, “This is a bad night for car trouble, but you’re all set now.” “Thanks,” I said. “How much do I owe you?” He shook his head, “Nothing. Cynthia told me you were a cripple(跛者). Glad to be of help. I know you’d do the same for me. There’s no charge, friend.” I held out a five-dollar bill, “No! I like to pay my way.” He made no effort to take it and the little girl stepped closer to the window and said quietly, “Grandpa can’t see it. ”

1“A cat has nine lives” here means ______ .

A.a cat can live nine times longer than any other animal

    B.a cat can die ninth

C.a lucky man cannot die easily

D.the writer will live nine times

2What do you think of the man who helped change the tire?

    A.Warm-hearted but pitiable

    B.Warm-hearted and happy

C.A blind old man that has nothing to do every day

D.A poor old man that is always ready to help others

3How will the story be ended?

A.The writer paid the little girl but the old man did not accept.

B.The writer drove away with tears running down his cheek.

C.The writer stayed there, without knowing what to do and how to do.

D.In the next few frozen seconds the writer felt the shame and astonishment he had never felt before.

4The best title for this passage perhaps will be ______.

A.The Old Man and His Daughter B.Heart Leaping Up

C.Never Lose Heart D.Good Will Be Rewarded Good
