二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   There are breathing robots versed in “thousands of years of Buddhist breathing techniques” that claim to soothe you to sleep. Then there are weighted blankets that press around 10% of your body weight down as you take a nap. And there are apps, such as supermodel Natalia Vodianova's Loona, designed to create a "sleepscape" by combining visual and aural storytelling with relaxation-based activities such as colouring in. These are just some of the products at the heart of the “sleep aid revolution”.

Sleep occupies almost as much of the national conversation as weather—how much, when, how deep it is—and we are more than prepared to spend our money on more, and better, shut-eye.

In the past 12 months, sales of sleep-related products have soared. At John Lewis, silk pillowcase sales have increased by 533%. At weighted blankets company Mela, sales are up by 250%, while at Holland & Barrett sales of products in the sleep and relaxation category have grown by over 30% year-on-year.“ sleep” is the third most common unique search term for visitors to Neal's Yard Remedies' site.

But there are some dissenting voices. "The sleep-aid industry steps in, with claims that we're not sleeping because it's time for a new mattress, and offers us products to enable sleep," says Darian Leader, author of Why Can't We Sleep? “However," he points out, “what we are seeing is a depoliticizing of sleep - ignore the socio-economic burdens and internal pain that people face and see lack of sleep as a separate problem with a 'separate solution'."

The growing interest isn't limited to those suffering from diagnosable sleep issues—sleep has become a pillar of the wellness market and tracking it has become another symptom of the rise of the quantified self, a movement that sees people tracking their every step.

Sleep expert Dr. Neil Stanley distrusts the market: “It is a trick to scare everybody because nobody's going to make any money if you just go around saying 'it's common sense, you know how to sleep' .”

While rebutting any scientific evidence for many of the products, he admits that anything—a silk pillowcase, camomile tea, yoga or listening to Pink Floyd really loudly - could, in theory, help.

But, he says, many are overlooking the simple things. "You need three things for a good night's sleep: a bedroom that's comfortable, a relaxed body and a quiet mind ... you need to make space in your life for sleep.”

【1】What does the underlined word “dissenting” probably mean?

    A.Approving

    B.Opposed

    C.Indifferent

    D.Pessimistic

【2】What message does Darian Leader intend to convey in Paragraph 4?

A.A sleep problem is mainly caused by lack of a good mattress.

B.Social and psychological factors should be taken into account.

C.Social and psychological factors are more important than the physical setting.

D.Manufacturers trick people into buying those sleep-related products.

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Sleep-related products meet a mixed reception among customers.

B.Only people with sleep problems need sleep-related products.

C.There is a trend that more people monitor their sleep situation.

D.Darian and Dr. Neil hold contradictory opinions towards sleep-related products.

【4】Why does Dr. Neil Stanley say the words in the last paragraph?

    A.To give a warning.

    B.to provide a comment.

    C.To express a concern.

    D.To make a suggestion.

  • 23、TONY SOPRANO’S LAST MEAL

Between 1912 and the 1990s, New Jersey State was home to more than 20 diner manufacturers who made probably 95 percent of the diners in the U.S., says Katie Zavoski, who is helping hold a diner exhibit. What makes a diner a diner? (And not, say, a coffee shop?) Traditionally, a diner is built in a factory and then delivered to its own town or city rather than constructed on-site. Zavoski credits New Jersey’s location as the key to its mastery of the form. “It was just the perfect place to manufacture the diners,” she says. “We would ship them wherever we needed to by sea.”

VISIT “Icons of American Culture: History of New Jersey Diners,” running through June 2017 at The Cornelius House / Middlesex County Museum in Piscataway, New Jersey

    GOOD FOOD, GOOD TUNES

Suzanne Vega’s 1987 song “Tom’s Diner” is probably best known for its frequently sampled “doo doo doo doo” melody (旋律) rather than its diner-related lyrics. Technically, it’s not even really about a diner — the setting is New York City’s Tom’s Restaurant, which Vega frequented when she was studying at Barnard. Vega used the word “diner” instead because it “sings better that way,” she told The New York Times. November 18 has since been called Tom’s Diner Day, because on that day in 1981, the New York Post’s front page was a story about the death of actor William Holden. In her song Vega sings: “I Open / Up the paper / There’s a story / Of an actor / Who had died / While he was drinking.”

    MEET THE DINER ANTHROPOLOGIST

Richard J.S. Gutman has been called the “Jane Goodall of diners” (he even consulted on Barry Levinson’s 1982 film, Diner). His book, American Diner: Then Now, traces the evolution of the “night lunch wagon,” set up by Walter Scott in 1872, to the early 1920s, when the diner got its name (adapted from “dining car’’), and on through the 1980s. Gutman has his own diner facilities (floor plans, classic white mugs, a cashier booth); 250 of these items are part of an exhibit in Rhode Island.

READ American Diner: Then & Now (John Hopkins University Press)

VISIT “Diners: Still Cooking in the 21st Century,” currently running at the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island

1In what way is a diner different from a coffee shop?

    A. Its location.   B. Its management.

    C. From what it is built.   D. Where it is constructed.

2What do we know about Vega’s 1987 song “Tom’s Diner”?

    A. It warns people not to drink.   B. It was inspired by Tom’s Diner Day.

    C. Its melody is preferred to its lyrics.   D. Its original title was Tom’s Restaurant.

  • 24、Smartphones, tablets and other digital devices can be addictive. They affect sleep. They draw kids into an alternate universe, often distracting(使分心)them from more productive-and healthier-real-world activities. And they are often linked to anxiety and depression, learning disabilities and obesity(肥胖). Yet for many teenagers, cellphones and social media are also absolutely necessary tools for planning their social lives, keeping up with schoolwork and staying in touch with out-of-town friends and relatives.

How can parents make the most of the constructive uses of screen-based technology while minimizing its harmful effects?

The key is helping kids use technology as a tool, not a toy, “where there’s some purpose other than the medication of boredom,” says Jim Taylor, a psychologist and author of the book Raising Generation Tech:Preparing Your Children for a Media-fueled World. Taylor, like many other medical and mental health professionals, advises parents to set limits and stick to them. They should restrict the amount of time their kids spend on devices, create tech-free zones-no cellphones in their bedrooms, for example-and tech-free times, such as at the dinner table, in restaurants and on family outings.

Perhaps the best thing you can do is serve as a good role model by exhibiting the same online behavior you expect of your children, says Dr. Elias Aboujaoude, a Stanford University psychiatrist. “If parents are breaking their own rules,” Aboujaoude says, “kids cannot be expected to behave differently.”

Chad Landgraf, 44, of Oklahoma, told me he was worried about how addicted his 12-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter became when they were on their devices. So, hoping to set an example, he switched from e-books to old-fashioned print. “When I had my Kindle or ipad open, they. didn’t know if I was reading or surfing the net,” Landgraf says. “But at least if I have a paper copy of a book, they know I am reading. Modeling seems like the easiest way.”

【1】What may be the result of children’s using digital devices?

    A.Health improvement.

    B.Free creation.

    C.Sleep disorder.

    D.Good conduct

【2】What does Jim Taylor suggest parents doing?

A.Killing time by using screen-based technology.

    B.Forbidding kids using smartphones.

    C.Setting clear boundaries for kids.

    D.Restricting tech-free family time.

【3】Why did Chad pick up old-fashioned print?

A.He was afraid of becoming addicted.

B.He expected to be a role model.

C.He was tired of surfing the net.

D.He preferred paper copies of books.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Parenting in a digital world

    B.Learning to be intelligent parents

    C.Using smart devices wisely

    D.Helping children behave themselves

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Several years ago I had loaned a girl I was seeing some cash as she needed some work done to her car. We eventually split up but remained friends. About a month after the split she sent me a card thanking me for helping out and repaid me, which I had never expected from her. The $250 she gave me was nice to have, but honestly was not needed, nor did I expect her to repay me.

About a week after I had been given this cash, I went on a late night food run at Denny’s with a friend, where I encountered a homeless man who was taking shelter from the less than pleasant weather we were having at the time. The homeless man who was sitting at a table next to us was told by the waitress that he couldn’t be there if he didn’t order anything. I overheard him ask how much a cup of coffee was, counted the few dollars he had in his pocket, and a little reluctantly (不情愿) ordered coffee so he could stay inside.

As I heard all of this, and thinking of the cash I had just received but didn’t need, I felt this might be someone I could help. So I engaged the man in some conversation, because I know most people who are homeless don’t get the benefit of casual conversation very often. I learned he was aged 45 and had previously worked as a tree trimmer (修剪工). Unfortunately about a year prior he fell while working and badly hurt his back and was no longer able to work until he got his back medically dealt with. After about 10 — 15 minutes of conversation I told him that if he felt comfortable accepting my offer, I would buy him whatever food off the menu he wanted. He resisted because he didn’t want to trouble me and put me out of money. I insisted he accept my offer because everyone deserves a warm meal. He eventually accepted and ordered something simple.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After paying the bills for the food, I pulled the $250 cash out of my wallet and folded it into my pocket.
