  • 22、Mountains of smoke and fire

Deep under the Earth’s surface, it’s so hot that even rock melts. Sometimes this molten rock, called “magma”, is pushed up to the surface.1And the opening or vent that lets the lava out is a volcano.

A volcano may explode violently, throwing out rocks for miles around.2Some volcanoes release clouds of poisonous gas or huge clouds of ash. Volcanoes can even do all these things underwater.

Most volcanoes have been around for a very long time. Many haven’t erupted for years and have cooled off. Volcanoes that are not going to erupt again are called “dead volcanoes”. Some volcanoes still give off smoke. These “sleeping volcanoes” may “wake up” one day and erupt again. 3 But one day in AD 79 it suddenly woke up. Its eruption threw out hot ash and rocky fragments (碎片) that buried the city of Pompeii. A hot mud-flow buried nearby Herculaneum. Because the remains are so well preserved, the area has been named a World Heritage site.

But not all volcanoes are destructive. When a volcano throws out vast amounts of lava and debris (岩屑), it piles up into a mountain.4

Other volcanoes help provide heat and energy. Many Icelandic homes get their hot water from springs heated by volcanic steam.5 Plants grow very well in the rich soil left by volcanoes. And valuable gems, such as diamonds, can sometimes be found in the rocks that are thrown out by volcanoes.

A.At this point it is referred to as “lava”.

B.The molten rock is formed inside the Earth.

C.This steam can also be used to produce electricity.

D.Mount Vesuvius in Italy slept for a thousand years.

E.Or it may push lava out so that it flows away, cools and hardens.

F.Japan has many active volcanoes within its narrow national territory.

G.The Hawaiian Islands and the island of Iceland were created in this way.

  • 23、   After spending 18 years protecting your children from various dangers on the road and off, you now face the prospect of handing them the car keys. It's time for them to learn how to drive. We can help you mold (塑造)your teens into safe and capable drivers.

Our site contains information on driver licensing requirements for teens as well as ideas to help you-the parents - lay down the ground rules with your young driver before you hand over the car keys. Here you will find information on the most common safety problems novice drivers should avoid. Educate yourself about the consequences of illegal alcohol use, the distracted (分心的)driving, and much more.

Your teen sees a driver's license as a step toward freedom, but you might not be sure your teen is ready for the road. One thing is certain: teens aren't ready to have the same level of driving responsibility as adults. Teen drivers have a higher rate of serious crashes, mainly because of their immaturity lack of skills and experience. They speed, make mistakes, and get distracted easily-especially if their friends are in the car. To help your teen stay safe behind the wheel , all 50 states have a graduated driver licensing (GDL) system that limits high- risk driving situations for new drivers. This approach can reduce your teen's crash risks by as many as 50%.

What can you do? Learn about your state's GDL laws. Familiarizing yourself with the restrictions can better assist you in instructing your kids. You must establish ground rules for your teen driver. Prohibit driving while using the phone or other electronic devices, and require seat belt use at all times. Remind them that it is illegal to drink under 21, and it is illegal to drink and drive. If your child is under 21, his or her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) should always be at 0. 00, not just under 0, 08.

  • 24、   A decade ago, colored lights danced around the living room on New Year's Eve and happy music was played. Upstairs, the children were asleep. But I wasn't feeling happy. In mid-December, my husband and I had been informed that he had cancer and that he was going to die. He had less than a year left, the doctors said.

In the years since that painful season, I have come to look back upon New Year's Eve as an ending and a beginning. New Year's Eve brings a halt to the endless commitments that fill our daily lives and a chance to reflect.

New Year's Eve is full of possibility and anticipation. What will be the surprising experiences and delightful successes in the coming year? But also, what disappointments are waiting for us in the next twelve months?

In many ways, New Year's Eve and the days that surround it are a line between past and future. That line is made up of a series of moments of transition that take us out of the old and into the new. Transition can be challenging for many of us. It's about letting go of the familiar and diving headlong (迅猛地) into the unfamiliar.

Just as, back then, I had to face letting go of the life I had led with my beloved husband and stepping into a new world as a widowed (丧偶的) mom. I find that each year I have to step out of the version of me that suited the year that is ending and ease into the version of me who will rise to the goals I am holding for myself for the year ahead.

Last year at this time, I sat in a chair in southern France and drank in the stillness and beauty of the countryside around me. The three children and I had brought into this world talked and laughed around the table beside me as we enjoyed a lunch of bread and cheese.

I was filled with a sense of joy and I had a glowing heart that was full of hope. It was another ending and another beginning. May we all transition into the best of what lies ahead. May we all find happiness this holiday season.

B.Break with daily routines and form a new habit.

C.Spend more time with family members.

D.Think about the past and get ready for the future.

3What is the author's attitude toward the future?

    A.Calm. B.Indifferent.

    C.Doubtful. D.Expectant.

4What is the main purpose of the article?

    A.To memorialize her husband.

B.To show how she got through a hard time.

C.To share her view of New Year's Eve.

D.To remind us that uncertainty is part of life.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical(实证的)basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused and lead to relaxation.

Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity.In2007,Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room's ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections.Low ceilings,on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.

In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence a person's ability to concentrate.Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.According to another study at the University of Georgia, using nature to improve focus of attention seems to pay off academically. It found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.

Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim(暗淡的)light helps people to loosen up.If that is true, generally keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation.Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.

So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings."We have a very limited.number of studies,so we're almost looking at the problem through a straw," architect David Allison says. "How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That's what we're all struggling with."
