二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Deep in the wilderness of northern Kenya, two boys found a pair of crying cheetah cubs (猎豹幼崽). The cubs' mother had been killed by a lion. The cheetahs were only a few weeks old. In the wild, about 9 out of 10 cheetah cubs die before they are three months old. They are food for lions. But these cubs were so lucky that they were saved by their "heroes", who brought them to Jane and Ian Craig. The Craigs help save endangered animals at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

The Craigs nursed the cheetah cubs back to health feeding them with bottles, sleeping with them, and comforting them. They named the cubs Sambu and Toki. But what would become of these cubs? How would they survive on their own? In the wild, cubs stay with their mothers until they are almost 2 years old. During that time, cheetah mothers teach their young how to hunt and how to protect themselves. The Craigs wouldn't be able to find a cheetah mother to teach the cubs. So they turned to a man named Simon King.

King has spent more than twenty years studying cheetahs. He gave them a nod of approval when hearing about this, though taking care of two baby cubs would take a huge amount of time. For two years, he would need to have them at his side most of the time. But he felt there was no other choice. And so, when the brothers were one month old, King became their father.

The brothers followed King everywhere. If they saw large dangerous and fierce mammals, King would growl at the cubs the way a mother cheetah would have, which was a signal for the cubs to stay away. They learned quickly. King taught the cheetahs to hunt using a toy rabbit as King pulled it around on a rope. With more lessons and training, the brothers began to hunt on their own. King is one proud father now.

【1】What do we know about the two cheetah cubs?

  • 23、   The worst outbreak of desert locusts (蝗虫) in decades is presently underway in the Horn of Africa. It is the biggest of its kind in 25 years for Ethiopia and Somalia — and the worst Kenya has seen for 70 years.

What we are seeing in East Africa today is unlike anything we’ve seen in a very long time. Its destructive potential is enormous, and it’s taking place in a region where farmers need every gram of food to feed themselves and their families. Most of the countries hardest hit are those where millions of people are already vulnerable (脆弱的) or in serious humanitarian need, as they endure the impact of violence, drought, and floods.

We have acted quickly to respond to this outbreak. The primary method of battling locusts is the aerial spraying of pesticides (杀虫剂). FAO’s “Locust Watch” service explains that “although giant nets, flamethrowers, lasers, and huge vacuums have been proposed in the past, these are not in use for locust control. People and birds often eat locusts but usually not enough to significantly reduce population levels over large areas.”

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has released $10 million from its Central Emergency Relief Fund to fund a huge scale-up in aerial operations to manage the outbreak.

But the window to contain this crisis is closing fast. We only have until the beginning of March to bring this infestation under control as that is when the rain and planting season begins. If left unchecked — and with expected additional rains — locust numbers in East Africa could increase 500 times by June.

We must act now to avoid a full-blown catastrophe. And we will. At the same time, we need to pay attention to a bigger picture. This is not the first time the Greater Horn of Africa has seen locust outbreak approach this scale, but the current situation is the worst in decades. This is linked to climate change. Warmer seas mean more tropical storms, generating the perfect breeding conditions for locusts.

1What is implied in paragraph 2?

A.People in East Africa are suffering drought.

B.People in East Africa are going through floods.

C.The locust outbreak will cause crop failure.

D.The locust outbreak is worsening locals’ life.

2What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.We need a bigger picture to study the disaster.

B.It is the second outbreak of locusts in East Africa.

C.It is the largest outbreak of locusts ever in history.

D.The outbreak of locusts is fueled by global warming.

3What is the purpose of the text?

A.To analyse and compare. B.To inform and call for.

C.To argue and discuss. D.To introduce and assess.

4Where does the text probably come from?

    A.A guidebook. B.A health magazine.

C.A news report. D.A chemistry paper.

  • 24、NBC News published an opinion piece declaring that parents aren’t qualified to make decisions about school curricula for their children. The column, “Schools face parents who want to ban critical race theory and don’t get how teaching works”, written by author Christina Wyman was instantly roasted on social media.

“Parents and politicians across the country are getting their fingers into the curricula that public schools use to teach students. Some states are passing laws to keep critical race theory out of schools, and school libraries are coming under attack for containing books about gender. There are even parents who are trying to keep students away from learning about mental health and as though helping children build emotional strength is a bad thing,” Wyman wrote to kick off the piece.

“While the political climate and national involvement in school districts give the phenomenon a broader platform and have more serious impact, this behavior is nothing new. Parents have always tried to interfere (干涉) with curricula, as I observed when teaching middle school in the mid-2000s,” she continued. Wyman then compared parents wanting to have a say in what their children learn to people breaking into an operating room during surgery on their children. “These interventions are nothing more than theater, and school boards and administrators should be protecting their teachers and students from them rather than bowing to them,” she wrote.

Wyman, who spent some time discussing her own schooling and Ph. D. in curriculum, painted parents as under-qualified to cut in unless they have achieved the same level of education that is required of most teachers. Wyman wrote, “An educator’s primary goal is to teach students to think. Parents who attempt to influence curricula with their personal opinions block that goal.”

【1】How did Wyman begin the piece?

    A.By presenting some unreasonable phenomena.

B.By calling for parents’ concern about children.

C.By stressing students’ mental health problems.

D.By introducing various public school curricula.

【2】What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Curricula.

    B.Parents.

    C.Interventions.

    D.Administrators.

【3】Why does Wyman write the opinion piece?

A.To attract readers’ attention to NBC.

B.To reflect parents’ love for children.

C.To call for more concern for curricula.

D.To persuade parents out of interfering.

【4】Which word can best describe Wyman?

    A.Stubborn.

    B.Qualified.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Unprofessional.
