21、 Virtual reality isn’t just for video games anymore. The technology is changing industries that many people had never thought it would, such as dairy farming.
Russian dairy farmers gave cows VR goggles (眼镜) with hope that they would be happier and make better milk. A farm just outside of Moscow is testing VR glasses for its cows, it says, in an effort to increase the quantity and quality of the milk produced.
That’s according to a news release published Monday from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Moscow region. It came accompanied by photos of a cow trying out its fancy new goggles. The ministry explains it like this:Studies have shown that cows, environmental conditions can impact the milk produced, specifically improving its quality or increasing its quantity. So, a team of developers, with the help of vets and consultants for dairy production, made some oversized VR glasses for cows. They adapted the human versions to account for cows’ different head shapes and eyesight, the news release says. And then voila! Cow VR glasses. And what were these cows experiencing with their new VR glasses? A wild, expansive field beneath the summer sun. A cow’s (virtual) paradise (天堂).
So far, it’s unclear if the glasses have helped milk production-further study will be needed for that. But a first test did reveal a decrease in anxiety and an increase in the emotional mood of the herd, the release said. To be fair, if we were transported to a vast field in the summertime, our anxiety and emotional mood would be better, too. Russian dairy farmers aren’t the only ones going the extra mile to keep their cows happy and improve product, though. Some Wagyu farmers set mood lighting, among other tricks, to keep their cows calm and producing the best beef possible. Others play them music, which one Missouri farmer says leads to better milk.

22、 I believe that my actions show my beliefs, not my words.
I wrote a letter to my kids a few years ago. It’s three pages long, and it sums up my life experience of four decades. By the time they reach adulthood, they will have heard most of their father’s advice in that letter: live in the moment, do not attach yourself to physical things, treat others the way you would like to be treated, etc. I sealed the letter in a white envelope, and wrote instructions that nobody should open it unless something horrible happened to me.
As a police officer, I have seen life disappear in an instant. I realize that could happen to me at any time. Yet knowing that letter is there in my locker makes me more comfortable with my own death.
Every day, when I open my locker, I see the letter. It makes me aware that I should be careful at work, and show my children and the people I have connection with that I try to practice everything I have written. If that day comes and my children finally read the letter, I hope that because of my actions, they will take my written beliefs to heart and improve upon my example.
But for me, it’s not enough to write down my beliefs. I try to be the best person I can be every day---even in very difficult circumstances. I am more successful some days than others, but sometimes I curse too much. Sometimes I am cynical, unwilling to believe that people have good and honest reasons for doing something. I also get stressed and upset, yelling at my kids sometimes, and sometimes I am not as loving or as sympathetic as I should be. In fact, I am far from perfect, but I hope my children will eventually realize that perfection is an illusion. What really matters is that, instead of just writing down our beliefs, we all take action to be the best humans we can be.

23、55-year-old Michael Smith spotted an injured baby bird lying on the roadside as he cycled home one evening in May. He picked up the tiny bird, now named Patch, and took him home, where he made him a little nest and fed him boiled eggs. Now he has recovered and is about 16 weeks old. Patch has spread his wings, but comes back to his rescuer when Michael calls.
Bird and man have such a close relationship that Patch gives his friend little beaky kisses and hitches lifts (搭便车) on his bike rides and walks. Michael loves Patch so much that he even slept in the open air one night when his feathered friend didn’t come out of a tree.
Michael, an ex-builder from Malvern in Worcestershire, said, “I love nature and animals, so I couldn’t leave him injured in the wild. He’s like my best friend now, and I spend as much time with him as possible. He is the talk of the town, and if I am not with him, everyone is asking after him.”
Michael thought Patch, who he thinks is a boy, had been attacked by another animal when he found him with a broken wing. After living in an old pigeon box Michael got from a friend, and being fed boiled eggs, bread and milk, Patch took four weeks to recover the use of his wing. Michael still feeds Patch worms, and fruit like cherries and grapes, but the now-recovered bird catches moths for himself.
Patch lives in a nest that Michael built in the garden, but comes in for playmates and occasional sleepovers (在外过夜) in the house Michael shares with his 78-year-old mother Mary.
Michael said, “People call me the bird whisper, or birdman of Malvern. It came quite naturally to me. And I remember all these tales I’ve heard about people rescuing birds and forming a bond. I was quite well known around here but I am even more so now: it’s a lovely thing to be known for it. Having him is such a lovely thing to happen.”
【1】How did Michael Smith treat Patch after finding him lying on the road?
A.He brought him home and fed him.
B.He handed him to a relevant department.

A.Patch was left injured in the nest.
B.He wanted to find Patch and take hold of him.
C.Patch sat in a tree and didn’t visit him.
D.He found Patch had spread his wings and flown away.
【3】What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A.How Patch was attacked by another animal.
B.How Michael helped Patch get well again.
C.How Patch managed to catch moths for himself.
D.How Michael found a pigeon box for Patch to live in.
【4】What can we learn about Michael from the text?
A.He lives with his mother who is old.
B.He hates it when Patch gives him a kiss.
C.He asked somebody to make a nest for Patch.
D.He is a construction worker and will retire soon.
24、 It is possible that interstellar(星际的)space explorers could face problems communicating with all the arrivals, their spoken language having changed in isolation(与世隔绝)along the way.
Therefore, a new paper by two American scholars Andrew McKenzie and Jeffrey Punske recommends that such crews include members with knowledge of what is likely to occur and how to adapt. They co-authored the article “Language Development During Interstellar Travel”, in which they discuss the concept of language change over time.
In a recent interview, McKenzie gamed it out.
“If you’ re on a spaceship for 10 generations; new concepts will emerge, new social issues will come up, and people will create ways of talking about them,” McKenzie said, and these will become the vocabulary particular to the ship. People on Earth might never know about these words. And the further away you get, the less you’re going lo talk to people back home.
So if we have Earth English and spaceship English, you will have to learn a little Earth English to send messages back, or to read the information that came with the spaceship.
“Also, keep in mind that the language back on Earth is going to change, too. So they may well be communicating like we’d be using Latin-communicating with this version of the language nobody uses.”
The authors also point out that an adaptation in the form of sign language will be needed for use with and among crew members who, genetics tell us,are sure to be born deaf.
“Every new spaceship will essentially offload linguistic(语言学)immigrants to a foreign land. Given the certainly that issues such as whether they will be discriminated will arise, and the uncertainty of exactly how they will progress, we strongly suggest that any crew exhibit strong levels of linguistic training in addition to simply knowing the required languages. There will be need for an informed linguistic policy on board that can be maintained without referring back to Earth-based regulations.”
If a study of the linguistic changes aboard ship could be performed, it would “add to its scientific value,” McKenzie and Punske conclude.
【1】What does the underlined phrase “game it out” mean?

A.Through Earth-based linguistic policy.
B.Through adequate language training.
C.By knowing the required language.
D.By referring to informed rules.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Why space travelers change their language.
B.How language is changed in the future time.

25、Optimism and pessimism are both powerful forces. Each of us must choose which we want to ______ our future and our expectations. We can choose to laugh or cry, bless or ______. It’s our decision: from which perspective do we want to view life? Will we look up in ______or down in desperation?
I believe in the upward look. I choose to ______the positive and skip right over the negative.
An optimistic attitude is not a luxury(奢侈品); it’s a(n) ______. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, how you perform, and how well you will get along with other people. ______, negative thoughts, attitudes, and expectations ______themselves; they become a self-fulfilling prophecy(预言). Pessimism creates a dark place where no one wants to live.
Years ago, I drove into a service station to get some gas. It was a beautiful day, and I was feeling great. As I walked into the station to pay for the gas, the attendant said to me, “ How do you feel?” That seemed like a(n) ______question, but I felt fine and told him so. “You don’t look well,” he replied. This ______me completely by surprise. A little ______confidently, I told him that I had ______felt better. Without hesitation, he continued to tell me how bad I looked and that my skin appeared yellow.
By the time I left the service station, I was feeling a little ______. About a block away, I ______over to the side of the road to look at my face in the mirror. How did I feel? Was I affected with jaundice(黄疸)? Was every all right? By the time I got home, I was beginning to feel a little nauseous(恶心). Did I have a bad liver? Had I ______some rare disease?
On another beautiful day, when I went into that gas station, feeling ______again, I figured out what had happened. The place had recently been painted a bright, distasteful ______, and the light reflecting ______the walls made everyone inside look as though they had hepatitis(肝炎)! I wondered how many other folks had ______the way I did. I had let one short conversation with a total ______change my attitude for an entire day. He told me I looked sick, and before long, I
was actually feeling sick. That single ______observation had a great effect on the way I felt and acted.
The only thing more powerful than negativism is a word of optimism and hope. When a whole culture adopts an upward look, incredible things can be accomplished.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a baby,my parents always gave me anything I waned. Then my dad died when l was three, and I got even more stuff as my mom, fiends and family tried to make me feel better. Mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world changed.
My mom had thought buying houses was a good way to invest her money. But the real estate (房地产) market crashed. I went from the kid who got an iPod when his tooth fell out and who had the coolest house to hang out in, to literally haying nowhere to stay. Mom's best fiend Auntie Loren, took us in until Mom could figure out what to do.
After the real estate crash, when I asked fora new toy, or bike, or even to see a movie Mom would say "maybe for your birthday" or "I'm sorry honey, but we can't really afford that now." I didn't know it then, but Mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games were not helping my mom, who was already a widow, deal with her feelings about our new crisis-our financial situation. But I wasn't used to hearing "no”. So for a year or two I kept asking.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said I wanted a new video gaming system . I didn't know it was expensive. All knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
