21、Wi-Fi has become an integral part of our fast-paced everyday lives. Thanks to Wi-Fi, we no longer have to be restricted to the Internet with cables. But have you ever stopped to wonder how it works?
Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit information between your device and a router (路由器) via frequencies. Two radio-wave frequencies can be used, depending on the amount of data being sent: 2.4 gigahertz (千赫兹) and 5 gigahertz. What does that mean, though? Well, a hertz is just a measurement of frequency. For example, let’s say you’re sitting on a beach, watching the waves crash to shore. If you measured the time between each wave crash, you’d be measuring the frequency of the waves. One hertz is a frequency of one wave per second. One gigahertz, on the other hand, is one billion waves per second. The higher the frequency, the greater the amount of data transmitted per second.
The two Wi-Fi frequencies are split into multiple channels so as to prevent high traffic and interference. When it comes to sharing the data across these channels, well, that’s when the magic computer science happens. The first step in the process is initiated by you. When you access the Internet on your device, it transforms the information you’ve requested into binary (二进制) code, the language of computers. Everything computers do is based in binary code, a series of 1s and 0s. When you click on this article, your request is translated into a bunch of 1s and 0s. The frequencies travel across the radio channels mentioned earlier and are received by the Wi-Fi router that your device is connected to. The router then transforms the frequencies back into binary code and translates the code into the Internet traffic that you requested, and the router receives that data through a hardwired Internet cable. The process repeats itself until you have loaded this article — or anything that requires the Internet.

22、 Danez Smith, one of America's most popular young poets and the author of Don't Call Us Dead, recommends his 5 favorite books.
Lilith's Brood by Octavia E. Butler (1989)
This book about aliens from the novelist who predicted "Make America Great Again" asks necessary questions about the harmful structures which we put our faith in despite our intelligence, and also how or if we will evolve out of our most dangerous selves. An essential, human book — with aliens!
The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton (2012)
The book is my bible. Open up to any page and Clifton delivers a word. Whether the subject is roaches, family, death, or surviving, she has a poem for all occasions. She can create the most complicated magic out of the simplest words.
Man vs. Sky by Corey Zeller (2013)
In his brief prose poems, Zeller represents the voice of a recently dead friend as he travels through the afterlife. Besides attracting me with its beauty to this day, it taught me that we can offer the dead not just our grief but our imaginations and dreams as well.
My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi (2014)
I'm a sucker for high school drama, superpowers, good-hearted heroes, and complicated bad characters. This manga(动漫)series is one of my favorite escapes. In a world where everybody and their mama has a superpower (literally), what makes someone a hero isn't about power or strength but about the desire to make people smile. Instant tears.
Deus Ex Nigrum by Jasmine Reid (2019)
I recently picked this chapbook for a prize. It's a marvel of language and heart. Reid's lyrics map the ordinary and the extraordinary with rare and invigorating skill. In a world and a country ever dangerous to the black people, this poet says, "If I am to be a twist ending, let it be that I lived." I am so excited to follow Reid's poems into the future.

24、A Scottish artist has been owed increasing the fortunes of the global pencil industry to after the surprise success of her “coloring-in” books for grown-ups.
Johanna Basford’s books of wonderful fill-in drawings have met a huge demand from those seeking to switch off from iPads, laptops and computer games. Now, having already topped the Amazon best-seller lists, her works are also giving a great increase in global sales for high-quality pencils, as coloring-in fans compete to make masterpieces of their own.
Far from being free of the digital age, pencil manufacturers are now struggling to cope with demand, with Faber Castell, the world ‘ s largest wood pencil manufacturer, revealing that it was now having to run extra shifts (轮班) at its factories.
“ People like coloring-in because they are fed up with digital, ” Ms Basford told “ The Sunday Telegraph”. “There is something nice about picking up a pencil and a pen. You are not going to get interrupted by Twitter, and there are also childhood memories in it. The last time you did a bit of coloring in, you probably weren’t about thinking about things that trouble you.” Rather like other recent middle-class crazes like home-baking, coloring-in appeals to nostalgia (怀旧感).
However, while it might be healthier than rushing in a home-made cake competition inspired by the Great British Bake Off, there is still a guilty pleasure to it, for not everyone approves of university-educated adults dedicating their spare hours to a “coloring-in” book that, in the view of critics anyway, ranks somewhere below puzzler books.
Leading the chorus of disapproval is comedian Russell Brand, who produced a recent sketch(素描) entitled “Adult Coloring Books: Is This the Apocalypse (大灾难)?” “What has turned us into terrified kids that want to live in childish stupors (恍惚)?” He got angry, accusing coloring-in fans of being scared of the modern world.
And what did Ms Basford say about criticizers like Mr Brand? “It’s a case of whatever makes you happy. There’s no right or wrong about it,” she said. “Who knows, maybe he just hasn’t found the right coloring-in book yet.”
“Coloring-in” clubs have formed worldwide, meeting in cafes and online to compare their works, and keeping the lead in the pencil of the industry.
