  • 21、Why do Hiccups Happen?

Most of us have been hic, hic, hiccupping since before we were born. Hiccups are the loud noises our throats make without us wanting them to.【1】But why do we hiccup, and how can we stop them?

According to WebMD, hiccups start in our diaphragm—which is the muscle between our lungs and stomach that helps us to breathe. When we breathe in, our diaphragm pulls down to let air into our lungs.【2】But if something irritates our diaphragm, it can cause it to spasm(痉挛). The spasm makes us inhale air suddenly. When this air hits our voice box, our vocal cords immediately shut, creating a “hic” sound.

【3】Swallowing air while sucking on candy—or drinking fizzy drinks like Coca-Cola, or too much alcohol—can also cause us to hiccup. Emotions—like being nervous, excited, or even stressed—cause hiccups too.

But how can we get rid of them?【4】The official recommendations from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) say that holding your breath for a short time is a good idea. Breathing into a paper bag is another option the NHS gives, as well as pulling your knees up to your chest and leaning forward, or very slowly drinking ice-cold water.【5】However, if your hiccups still haven't gone away after two days, WebMD says you’ll need to contact a doctor.

    A.More haste, less speed.

B.It then relaxes when we breathe out again.

C.They can be funny or embarrassing depending on where we are.

D.Some of the reasons we hiccup include eating too quickly or too much.

E.They get in the way of breathing, eating, or sleeping comfortably.

F.Some people believe holding your breath and slowly counting to 10 can work.

G.Stranger suggestions from the NHS include biting on a lemon or tasting vinegar.

  • 22、   Elephant, horse and cow wastes could be endless sources for a key element needed to make paper. It is good news for some nations where trees are scarce while animal wastes come in especially handy.

The idea for the unusual use of elephant and cow wastes first came to mind when researcher Dr Alexander Bismarck noticed something strange about goat wastes while vacationing in Greece. He observed some goats eating summer-dry grass and came to an interesting conclusion about what they digest.

Dr Bismarck said “I realized what comes out in the end is partially digested plant matter so there must be cellulose (纤维素)there". Animals eat dry grass containing cellulose, chew it and digest it in their stomach and then produce wastes. Up to 40 percent of those wastes are cellulose, which is easily accessible. Therefore, making paper from the partially digested   material would take much less energy than using raw wood. Additionally, it would require fewer chemical treatments.

This supply of raw material is plenty parks in Africa that are home to hundreds of elephants produce tons of wastes every day, and enormous cattle farms in the US and Europe produce mountains of wastes.

In order to make paper, the material must be processed with a special method. But it requires little because there is no need to break it down into small parts for use in paper, in contrast to conventional methods which need a lot of energy to break down wood.

Using wastes, we can reduce the number of steps needed in papermaking, simply because the animal already chewed the plant and attacked it with acid in their stomachs. You inexpensively produce a paper staff that has the same or even better properties than that from wood, with lower energy and chemical consumption.

1What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?

A.The observation of goat wastes. B.The usage of animal wastes.

C.The origin of the unusual idea. D.The vacation spent in Greece.

2Animal wastes can be used to make paper mainly because ________.

A.they will never run out B.they are easy to access

C.they are partly digested D.they contain much cellulose

3What is the advantage of making paper from animal wastes?

    A.It is more profitable. B.It is energy-saving.

C.It needs less material. D.It fits all parts of the world.

4What is the probable explanation of the underlined word “attack"?

    A.Treat. B.Mix.

    C.Clean. D.Protect.

  • 23、The UK will ban all new petrol and diesel-powered vehicles from its roads beginning in 19 years for environmental reasons, a government report says.

The plan aims to start removing petrol and diesel engines in 2040. It follows a similar official statement in France and comes after the British government was ordered by the High Court to develop new plans to reduce NO2 in the air. Judges ruled that previous clean-air plans were not enough to meet European Union pollution limits in the coming years.

The British government has said the poor air quality has an unnecessary and avoidable negative effect on citizens’ health, and costs up to $3.5 billion in annual lost productivity.

Part of the new plan involves an offer of $260 million to local governments to change rules where vehicle emissions (排放量) are over EU standards. Ideas so far include changing road layouts, reprogramming traffic lights and charging a fee for the oldest and most polluting cars on the road.

The plan also includes $1.3 billion for government purchase of extreme-low-emission vehicles, nearly $130 million to improve infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations and $378 million for remodeling existing vehicles.

Climate change is also a reason for the plan to get these vehicles off the road. “We can’t carry on with petrol and diesel cars,” Environment Secretary Michael Gove said. “It’s important that we all prepare for a significant change which deals not just with the problems of health caused by emissions, but the broader problems caused in terms of accelerating climate change.”

Gove added that local communities are partly responsible for coming up with ways to limit emissions, including possible limitations on commuters (上下班往返的人) and the addition of cleaner mass transportation options. Local leaders are called on to draw up “appropriate plans” to deal with climate challenges related to emissions, he said.

【1】Why does the British government decide on this ban?

A.To focus on its citizens’ health.

B.To promote solar energy in transport.

C.To respond to the court’s request.

    D.To follow in France’s footsteps.

【2】Which measure may the British government take to achieve its plan?

A.Limiting the number of traffic lights.

B.Changing the way roads are arranged.

C.Spending some money on electric vehicles.

    D.Removing old and high-emission vehicles.

【3】What can be inferred from Gove’s words?

A.Convenient public transportation is badly needed.

B.Petrol and diesel cars may hold back economic progress.

C.Vehicle emissions are the key factor in climate change.

D.United efforts are required to achieve the plan.

【4】What is the suitable title for this passage?

A.Practical ways to reduce vehicle emissions.

B.The UK plans to take petrol and diesel engines off roads.

C.The EU forces the UK to improve the poor air quality.

D.Relationship between vehicle emissions and climate change.

  • 24、   The Australian state of New South Wales rolled out “high definition detection cameras" on Sunday, designed to catch drivers using cell phones behind the wheel.

Andrew Constance, New South Wales' minister for roads, said the "world-fist" technology would target illegal cell phone use through "fixed and mobile cameras". The cameras will use artificial intelligence to review images and detect illegal use of cell phones, according to Transport for NSW.

Images identified as being likely to contain a driver illegally using a cell phone would then be verified by traffic police. Those images would be securely stored and managed.

Over the next three years, 45 portable cameras would be set up across the state, in unknown locations, and without warning signs, CNN branch Sky News Australia reported.

For the first three months, drivers caught out by the technology would receive a warning letter, Transport for New South Wales said in a statement, after which the drivers would face a fine of up to $344, or $457 in a school zone, and loss of points on their drivers' license.

“The NSW Government is serious about reducing our state's road deaths and launching mobile phone detection cameras is another way we will do this." Con stance said in a statement.

Officials said that a trial of the technology earlier in the year had caught more than 100,000 drivers illegally using a phone behind the wheel. Some 329 people died this year on New South Wales' roads, Reuters news agency reported, compared with 354 people for 2018, according to official statistics.

1Why does the NSW Government set up detection cameras?

A.To get some real-time information about the traffic.

B.To monitor people crossing the street casually.

C.To catch drivers using cell phones illegally.

D.To improve the work efficiency of the police.
