21、 When Jeff Sparkman draws his cartoon superheroes, he often has to ask other people to tell him what color his characters turned out to be because he's color-blind. Now, a new smart phone application can help him figure out what colors he's using and how the picture looks to others.
The DanKam app, available for iPhone and Android for $2.99, is an application that makes the vague colors that one percent of the population with color-blindness sees more like the "true" colors as everyone else sees them. In America, around 32 million color-blind Americans---95% are males---can soon have their life improved.
"DanKam takes the stream of data coming in through the phone's camera and changes the colors slightly so they fall within the range that people who are color-blind see," developer Dan Kaminsky told CNET. He came up with the idea after watching the film Star Trek with a color-blind friend.
It was then that he got to know more about colorblindness like its varying types and degrees. A vast majority, for instance, have trouble seeing red or green due to a genetic defect(缺陷). Blue-yellow colorblindness, however, is rarer and develops later in life because of aging, illness or head injuries, etc.
What the DanKam app attempts to do is to clean up the color space of the image signal so that colors can be seen to those suffering from viewing problems. “You can customize the app to fit your needs. There is a range and not everyone who is color-blind sees things the same.” Says Kaminsky.
Sparkman, a copy editor at CNET, tried out the app and was pleased with the results. "It would be useful for dressing for a job interview," he said. But using it for his art is “the most practical application." It worked well on LED and other lights on electronic devices, which means Sparkman can now identify the power light on his computer display as green.

23、 The following sad but true tale concerns my great-uncle, a wonderful, jolly, beloved man who was over six feet four and probably weighed close to three hundred pounds. He was also well-educated and in the early 1900s became a full-time Baptist minister. A kindly, gentle man despite his size, Uncle Alden Bentley’s only real fault seemed to be that he was terribly clumsy. As a young minister, he was paying a pastoral call one day on a woman in Dillon, South Carolina, when he accidentally sat on her Chihuahua, Twinkle, and killed it. As the lady searched for and called for her dog throughout the house, Uncle Alden felt underneath his hip and, realizing what he had done, panicked and slipped the dead dog into his coat pocket. Although he was devastated, he could not bring himself to tell the woman what had happened.
Five years later, he returned to the same home for an overnight visit and resolved to unburden himself by finally telling the woman exactly what had happened to Twinkie. She had just had the guest room prepared and had hung brand-new curtains. To make Uncle feel welcome, she had placed on the bedside table a large pitcher of ice water and a glass, as well as a pen and a bottle of ink, so he could work on his sermon before retiring.
Uncle liked to sleep with the window open and got up in the night to open it. As he did, he knocked over what he assumed to be a full glass of water. Then, groping along the walls in an unsuccessful search for the light switch, he retraced his steps several times before raising the window and settling back on the bed for the night. When he opened his eyes the next morning, he was horrified. The fresh wallpaper on two walls was covered with great black stains. The crisp white curtains were thoroughly spoiled with the prints of Uncle's huge paws. It had not been the water glass he'd overturned during the night-it had been the ink bottle.
In a shaken state of mind and knowing he must face the hostess, Uncle dressed hurriedly and started down the stairs outside the guest room. As he approached the landing, his foot slipped.
"Are you hurt?" His hostess cried as she rushed to Uncle's side.
"No," said Uncle as he rose to his feet, "but I have devastated your home." With that he quickly walked out the front door and, at the end of the walk, turned and said to his hostess with deep respect, "Twinkie had a Christian burial."
He then retired from the ministry and became a teacher of philosophy for many years at a private preparatory school in Massachusetts.
【1】What was the job of Uncle Alden when he was visiting the lady’s home?
A.A government official. B.A teacher.
C.A house agent. D.A churchman.

A.giving up work B.pulling back

【3】Which of the following statements about Uncle Alden is TRUE?
A.He suffered from a guilty conscience after the first visit to the lady’s home.
B.His rudeness led to a mess of the guest room during the second visit to the lady’s home.
C.He kept the death of Twinkie as a secret from the hostess all through the two visits.
D.His visits to the lady’s home always ended with rage and fury.
【4】What kind of tone is adapted by the writer in this short story?
A.Sympathetic B.Critical

24、 The classic model of education — a burst at the start and company training — is breaking down. One reason is the need for new and constantly updated skill. Manufacturing increasingly calls for brain work rather than manual labor.
Pushing people into ever-higher levels of formal education at the start of their lives is not the way to handle the problem. Just 16% of Americans think that a four-year college degree prepares students very well for a good job. Although a vocational education promises that vital first hire, those with specialized training tend to withdraw from the labor force earlier than those with general education perhaps because they are less adaptable.
At the same time on-the-job training is shrinking. In America and Britain it has fallen by roughly half in the past two decades. Self-employment is spreading, leaving more people to take responsibility for their own skills. Taking time out later in life to pursue a formal qualification is an option, but it costs money and most colleges are meant for youngsters.
The market is innovating to enable workers to learn and earn in new ways. Providers from General Assembly to Pluralsight are building businesses on the promise of improving careers. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have turned away from lectures on Plato or black holes in favor of courses that make their students more employable. At Udacity and Coursera self-improvers pay for cheap, short programs. By offering degrees online, universities are making it easier for professionals to polish their skills. A single master’s program from Georgia Tech could expand the annual output of computer-science master’s degrees in America by close to 10%.
Lifelong learning starts at school. As a rule, education should not be narrowly vocational. The curriculum needs to teach children how to study and think. A focus on “metacognition” (元认知) will make them better at picking up skills later in life.
【1】Which is the reason why traditional education is failing?
A.It bursts educators’ bubble in the beginning. B.Companies can’t afford training fees.
C.Old skills can’t meet the present needs. D.It fails to develop one’s brain.
【2】What can we infer from the text?
A.The more knowledgeable one is, the more likely he is to be employed.
B.Most Americans are poor at their studies in the college.
C.More than 80% of Americans have to be self-employed now.
D.Returning to college after working is not considered worthwhile.
【3】What does the underlined word “innovating” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Reforming its system. B.Declining little by little.
C.Booming all at once. D.Wasting time and energy.
【4】How do colleges adapt to the present education model?
A.They open online courses. B.They provide easier access to updated skills.
C.They pay for cheap short programs. D.They lower the standard for master’s degree.
