  • 21、   The subway system in the U.S. city of Boston will soon be equipped with train cars "Made in China," which will be shipped to the city in December. The current train cars in Boston have been running for decades and are too old to provide a modern trip experience.

Made in northeastern China's Jilin Province, the new cars can run at a speed of 102 kilometers per hour. Although designed according to the U.S. standard, the producing method of the cars is owned by a Chinese company named CRRC, the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation. The final products match the Boston subway's strict maximum weight requirement of 34 tons per car, which barred a lot of world-famous companies from getting the order form. "The cars have to be solid, but light-weight at the same time," technology manager of the project Hong Haifeng told CCTV's Mandarin news channel. "And they have to be compatible with the century-old facilities in Boston."

This is the first time for Chinese rail equipment to be used in the United States. The new cars are designed to run for 30 years. CRRC showcased the model car in Boston on April 3. CCTV reported that the model was praised by the local leaders and citizens, including the governor of Massachusetts Charlie Baker. "We're really looking forward to putting these in transit," he said, adding that the upgrades will bring the Boston subway into the modern era.

  • 22、   On January 12,a few days after registration for the course of Psychology and the Good Life, roughly 300 people had signed up. Within three days, the figure had more than doubled. After three more days, about 1,200 students,or nearly one-fourth of Yale undergraduates, were enrolled.

The course, taught by Laurie Santos,42,a psychology professor and the head of one of Yale's residential colleges, tries to teach students how to lead a happier, more satisfying life in twice-weekly lectures.

Students want to change,to be happier themselves, and to change the culture here on campus," Dr,Santos said in an interview. "With one in four students at Yale taking it,if we see good habits, things like students showing more gratitude, delaying less, increasing social connections,we're actually seeing change in the school's culture. "

Dr. Santos discovered that Yale students are interested in the class because,in high school, they had to give up their happiness to gain admission to the school, adopting harmful life habits that have led to what she called"the mental health crises we're seeing at places like Yale. "A 2013 report by the Yale College Council found that more than half of undergraduates sought mental health care from the university during their time there.

In reality,a lot of us are anxious, stressed and unhappy,"said Alannah Maynez,19,a freshman taking the course. "The fact that a class like this has such large interest speaks to how much students numb their emotions-both positive and negative-so they can only focus on their work, the next step and the next accomplishment. "

Students have long requested that Yale offer a course on positive psychology, according to Woo-Ky-oung Ahn,director of undergraduate studies in psychology, who said she was"blown away"by Dr. Santos' s proposal for the class.

Administrators like Fr. Ahn expected significant enrollment for the class, but none anticipated it being quite so large. Psychology and the Good Life, with 1,182 undergraduates currently enrolled, stands as the most popular course in Yale's 316-year history. The previous record-holder-Psychology and the Law-was offered in 1992 and had about 1,050 students, according to Marvin Chun, the Yale College dean. Most large lectures at Yale don't exceed 600.

1What is the purpose of the course?

A.To make students learn to show thanks.

B.To change the culture of the campus.

    C.To increase students 'social connections.

D.To teach students how to become happier.

2What does the underlined word"numb"in the fifth paragraph mean?

    A.Unable to express.

    B.Managing to let out.

    C.Willing to share.

    D.Failing to control.

3What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?

A.Students are interested in the course.

B.Students suffered from mental problems before.

C.Students have changed greatly after the course.

D.Students pay much attention to their performances.

    4What's the text mainly about?

    A.Mental problems of undergraduates.

    B.A famous professor-Laurie Santos.

C.Yale's most popular course in history.

D.How to teach college students to be happy.

  • 23、Jewel White, a 15-year-old student, gathers her books and signs herself out of a routine morning math class. She is not leaving school for the day, but is off to try some more challenging equations. This practice is not uncommon at Westmount Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where an unconventional learning approach is prevailing.

Westmount is one of the eight regular schools in the country where students work at their own pace and set their own direction, spending as much or as little time as they need on subjects. Teachers act as advisers. With the classroom teachers’ permission, students can sign out of a class to work on other materials or walk into another class to catch up on another subject. And every two weeks they make plans for their own learning time, with support from their adviser.

At a time when a shrinking student population is causing boards to close schools. Westmount sits at 30 percent overcapacity with 1,500 students. Its bursting number led education officials to consider expanding the program to other locations.

“If students are interested, we are going to do our best to provide that sort of programming,” said Todd White, chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.

When students like Jewel are not in a classroom, they can usually be found in the school’s learning commons, a study area for all students. There are teachers available to help, but generally students are working on their own assignments or projects.

Jewel said Westmount’s self-paced style caught her attention when she was looking at high schools. Westmount is not the school close to her home. She said at elementary school she would often cause trouble in class because she would complete her work early and not have much else to do. “I find this kind of academic environment in Westmount is a lot better for me,” she said. “I like the thought of being able to work faster or slower if needed.”

【1】What does the word “prevailing” underlined in paragraph I mean?

    A.Catching on.

    A.Complex but familiar.

    B.Flexible and efficient.

    C.Traditional and common.

    D.Difficult but interesting.

【3】What is Todd White’s attitude to Westmount’s style of learning?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Positive.

    D.Unconcerned.

【4】What did Jewel think of her elementary school?

A.It was a school closest to her home.

B.It provided too much homework for students.

C.Its learning atmosphere was not very satisfying.

D.Its students did not work as fast as Westmount.

  • 24、When officials from Brazil’s Indigenous (原住民) protection agency approached the hut in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, their fears were confirmed: They were witnessing the first recorded dying out of an uncontacted tribe in the country’s history.

The man lying there, the last member of his tribe, had died, and with him an entire culture and answers to a thousand questions.

Even his name was a mystery. He was known only as “the Man of the Hole” because of the dozens of holes he had dug over the years in his territory. His age, too, could only be guessed at. He appeared to be about 60, officials said.

It was a sad milestone for a country that in recent years has seen protections for Indigenous groups undermined by an administration that has prioritized development of the Amazon over conservation.

In Rondônia, the only resident of the 8,000-hectare (公顷) area lived in complete isolation for at least 26 years after the rest of his group was killed by ranchers (农场主) advancing the agricultural frontier.

Brazil’s Indigenous protection agency, Funai made direct contact with the last surviving man only in 1996. Marcelo dos Santos, an Indigenous expert, who led the Funai exploit that met the man, said he was found hiding in his hut. “We tried to establish a conversation and offered corn and arrows, but he was terrified and very aggressive. From this moment on, we had to respect his isolation.”

Even with protections in place, the territory suffered widespread deforestation up until about 13 years ago. Attacks on the last surviving man continued, as well, including one by armed gunmen in 2009, according to local news reports.

“For me, he was somehow a miracle: to be able to survive on his own, not speak to anybody and avoid all contact maybe out of grief or determination,” said Fiona Watson, a research director at Survival International, a London-based rights organization.

C.escaped being shot by a group of aggressive gunmen
