21、 I saw my first tree today. Dad used to tell me stories about the trees that still existed when he was a boy. There weren’t very many even then, with the urbanization program in full swing.
The O’Brien home was one of the few examples of old-style wooden structures that hadn’t been destroyed in Boston’s urban-renewal campaign. The family had been able to avoid this because of its wealth and political influence, and the house was passed on through generations to the present. Old man O’Brien had no children, so when he died, the Urban Center bought it. Then an official discovered that the house had a backyard-in the yard was a live tree!
When the news of the tree’s discovery leaked out, quite a few sightseers stopped by to have a look at it, and the local government, realizing the money-making potential, began charging admission and advertising the place. By now it had become a favorite spot for family trips like ours.
Dad paid the fee and we walked through a doorway hidden in a bookshelf and into the backyard. I just couldn’t help noticing the tree!
It was located at one end of the yard, with a fence around it for protection. It was similar in form to the plastic trees I’d seen, but there was much more. You could see details more delicate than in any artificially made plant. And it was alive. But best of all was the smell-fresh, living smell, unfamiliar to the world outside with metal, plastic, and glass. I wanted to touch the bark, but the fence prevented me from doing so.
On the way back, I read through the brochures. One part said the O’Brien home would be torn down next year to make room for some insurance building, and the tree will have to go, too.
I just sat still, fingering the object in my pocket that I had picked in the O’Brien’s backyard. I think it’s called an acorn (橡子).

A.It possessed some special characteristics.

So, wouldn’t it be amazing if you can identify the exact techniques shared by the world’s greatest communicators? 【2】 TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, posts its best presentations for free on the Internet.

【4】 Famous actors and musicians make a beeline for a TED stage when they have ideas to hare. A few day, after accepting the Oscar for best picture, Argo director Ben Affleck appeared at TED in Long Beach to talk about his work in the Congo. Earlier in the week U2 singer Bono delivered a presentation on the success of antipoverty campaigns around the world. When celebrities want to be taken seriously, they hit the TFD stage.

23、The Ostrich Pillow was created by a European designer, who wanted to find a creative way to provide people with the health and productivity benefits commonly associated with power napping (小憩). Power napping is as important as normal sleep. Only when you’re done with a power nap, are you expected to actually work better.
When you wake up from a normal nap, it’s completely OK to glance around the room, confirm that John Hodgman riding a unicorn (独角兽) was just an amazing dream, and then roll over to fall back asleep.
But the Ostrich Pillow is specifically designed for those shorter periods of rest-the power naps-and the creators say that their invention allows you to sleep anytime, anywhere by creating a “little private space within a public one, to relax and rest.”
Perhaps this says a lot about people’s attitudes toward napping and the importance of taking a little nap during the busy workday. The advertisement for the Ostrich Pillow even claims that a 20-minute power nap can increase productivity by 37%.
Amazing! I can only dream of all the things I would get done at the office if I actually worked at 37% productivity. And to think, all I need is a quick nap as soon as I get to my desk!
In general, the Ostrich Pillow seems like a great idea. It’s convenient. It’s comfortable. It has a place for your hands. But the big question is whether people will actually wear it in public.
Nevertheless, I’m still hoping to get my hands on one of these to give it a proper test drive. But, until then, if you need me, I’ll be sleeping buried on my desk!
【1】According to the passage, we can learn that ________.
A.the Ostrich Pillow can help people sleep longer

C.people from a normal nap usually dream about a unicorn
D.John Hodgman invented the Ostrich Pillow
【2】What does the writer think about the advertisement?
A.He feels bored.
B.He doubts it.
C.He believes it.
D.He dislikes it.
【3】Which of the following best describes the Ostrich Pillow?
A.Comfortable and cheap.
B.Productive and relaxing.
C.Convenient and comfortable.
D.Special and attractive.
【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The writer has got an Ostrich Pillow.
B.The writer is willing to have a drive test.
C.The writer will be sleeping on his desk without that.
D.The writer expects to own an Ostrich Pillow.
【5】What might be the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To introduce an invention for power napping.
B.To advertise a new invention — the Ostrich Pillow.
C.To inform people the importance of power napping.
D.To tell people a better way of keeping power napping.
24、 Nowadays, top performing sportsmen earn huge amount of money as compared to people in other professions. Some people consider it a rational approach. However, there are a few who think it is unjustifiable.
Some people think sports professionals with outstanding performance should be overpaid as it is a short-lived career which requires rigorous hard work as compared to other professions. This field demands a strict, disciplined life with extensive physical efforts, consistent practice, a fixed diet schedule to bring pride and glory to the country. Due to such tough requirements, people in this field have an average career span of 10-15 years. As sports professionals have limited tenure, they should be rewarded with high monetary gains to acknowledge their excellent performance.
However, there are a few who think that top performing sportsmen and women should not have high salaries as it is a biased approach. They feel that there are other critical professions which are more valuable to the country as compared to the sports field. For example, the professions, like doctors, social worker, works for the betterment of the society. Their efforts not only help to reduce the social issues prevailing in the community, but they also contribute in providing a healthy environment. As a result, they significantly contribute to the growth of the country. Henceforth, their efforts should be equally recognized along with the sports professionals.
In my opinion, although there are some logical reasons for huge earnings of the top performing players, people from other professions should also be equally appreciated in terms of lucrative monetary benefits for their outstanding contribution. As all the professions are critical in their own field and contributes to the overall development of the country.
To conclude, sports people delivering excellent performance should not be overpaid in comparison to other professionals who make a significant contribution to the society.
【1】A key reason for overpaying sports professionals with outstanding performance is that .
A. they work harder than others B. they have to keep a strict diet
C. their career is relatively short D. they meet tough requirements
【2】What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

B. Valuing sports can lead to prejudice.
C. Not all professions can get great incomes.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards overpaying top sportsmen?
A. Opposing. B. Supportive.
C. Ambiguous. D. Unconcerned.
【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. People’s various attitudes to top sportsmen.
B. Whether top sportsmen should be overpaid.
C. Top sportsmen bring honor to their homeland.
D. Overpaying top sportsmen harms other professions.
