  • 21、Shipwrecked Prayers

A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men aboard were able to swim to a small, desert-like island. Not knowing what else to do, the two survivors agreed that they had no alternative but to pray to God.

However, to find out whose prayers were more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.

The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the island, and he was able to eat its fruit. But the other man’s parcel of land remained barren.

After a week, the first man became lonely and decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the island. But on the other side of the island, there was nothing.

Soon thereafter the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food. The next day, like magic, all of these things were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.

Finally, the first man prayed for a ship so that he and his wife could leave the island, and in the morning he found a ship docked at his side of the island.

The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island, considering the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings since none of his prayers had been answered.

As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven booming, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”

“My blessings are mine alone since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he doesn’t deserve anything.”

“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”

“Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “what did he pray for that I should owe him anything?”

“He prayed that all your prayers would be answered.”

For all we know, our blessings are not the fruits of our prayers alone, but those of another praying for us. So what you do for others is more important than what you do for yourself.

    1The first man’s wife is _____.

    A. a swimmer who got to the island by accident

    B. an angel sent by God to keep him company

    C. a survivor from another wrecked ship

    D. a native person on the desert-like island

2The underlined word “barren” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____.

    A. isolated B. unproductive C. fertile D. dry

3Which of the following is true about the second man?

    A. He didn’t deserve any blessing from God.

    B. None of his prayers was answered by God.

    C. He is not brave enough to tell God his needs.

    D. His prayer helped his companion get out of trouble.

4What’s the moral of the story?

    A. Never judge a person by appearance.

    B. Don’t lose heart in trouble.

    C. Helping others is helping ourselves.

    D. Greed is the root of all evil.

  • 22、From tiny hummingbirds (蜂鸟) to giant whooping cranes, roughly half of the world’s more than 10,000 bird species migrate (迁徙). Longer wings and powerful flying muscles often help these birds cross vast expanses of air. But a study of nearly all bird species suggests many migrators share another unexpected flight aid: lighter-colored feathers.

Being a bit more lightly colored than non-migrating birds may help these long-distance fliers stay cool as they work hard under the hot sun to fly, researchers report December 6 in Current Biology.

It’s known that color can help birds hide from predators (捕食者) by blending in, or attract mates by standing out. But color has subtle effects too, including regulating temperature by absorbing or reflecting light, says Kaspar Delhey, an expert at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany. For example, bird eggs laid in colder climates tend to be darker, which may help keep them warm.

Migrating birds push their bodies to the physiological limit, which creates much heat. Some species cope by rising to cooler air during daytime. “If overheating is a problem in migratory birds, another way of dealing with that would be to evolve lighter colors that absorb less heat,” Delhey says.

Delhey and his colleagues analyzed over 20,000 illustrations of 10,618 bird species, ranking feather lightness for each species and comparing that with how far the birds fly. On average, lightness slightly increased with migratory distance, the team found. The longest-distance migrators were about 4 percent lighter than non-migrators, an effect that wasn’t explained by size, climate or habitat type for different species.

“It’s not a big difference,” Delhey says, noting that many migrators are darkly colored, perhaps for reasons unrelated to flight. But the trend was remarkably consistent.“Very different groups with very different biologies show this pattern,” Delhey says.“That surprised us.”

【1】Which of the following ignored previously help migratory birds fly?

    A.Longer wings.

    B.Vast expanses of air.

    C.Lighter-colored feathers.

    D.Powerful flying muscles.

【2】What does the underlined word “subtle” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Smart.

    B.Terrible.

    C.Ambiguous.

    D.Tender.

【3】How do migrating birds deal with overheating in them?

    A.By evolving lighter colors.

    B.By reaching bodies’ limit.

C.By flying higher to the sky.

    D.By absorbing more lights.

【4】What can be inferred from Delhey’s study?

A.10,618 bird species fly over a long distance altogether.

B.Species of migrating birds’ feathers vary significantly.

C.Migrators with dark feathers are clearly related to flight.

D.Migratory distance can be judged by feathers’ lightness.

  • 23、   Ecology is a complicated thing. c Given the facts that elephant damage often kills trees and bush fires often kill trees, a combination of the two will make things worse. However, as research shows just published in Biotropica, by Benjamin Wigley of Nelson Mandela University, if a tree has already been damaged, fire can actually help to make things better.

Since 1954the Kruger National Park has been the site of experiments. Dr Wigley carried out these experiments by looking at trees in three different zones. In one of these zones, the vegetation (植被) was burned every year. In the second it was burned every other year. The third zone, by contrast, was actively protected from fire. To keep things consistent, he only looked at the fate of a single tree species, the marula (玛鲁拉树), whose bark is often eaten by elephants. In July 2016, he and his colleagues identified 20 marulas in every zone and used a hammer and a knife to remove a 5 cm circular section of bark from each of them.

To their surprise, damaged trees in the annual burnt zone regrew 98% of their lost bark during the two years of the study. Those living in the second burnt zone regrew 92% of it. But those in the zone where fires were banned regrew only 72%.

The researchers also found something else around the trees' wounds: ants. Ten of the 20 trees in the fire-banned zone developed ant colonies in their wounds. The ants were known to damage tissue healing. By contrast, only five trees in the second zone and three in the annual zone developed ants' nests in their wounds.

It looks, therefore, as if bush fires are burning trees'wounds to kill the ants. Though such fires are surely harmful to healthy trees, it seems, in an example of two negatives making a positive, as if they are actually helpful to sick ones.

1What is the finding of the research?

A.More fire does good to trees. B.Fire makes damaged trees. grow better.

C.Ants always help trees gr8w well. D.Elephants often damage tree barks.

2What do we know about the experiments?

A.They were finished in one year.

B.They were carried out in different parks.

C.The damaged trees grew well as other trees.

D.The trees chosen had been damaged by the researchers.

3Why did the author mention ants in the last two paragraphs?

A.To prove that ants are bad animals.

B.To show the benefit fire brings to damaged trees.

C.To express how ants influence trees' growth.

D.To introduce the role ants play in ecology.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Is Fire Totally Bad for Trees2 B.How does Fire Destroy the Trees?

C.The Balance of Trees and Ants D.Trees, Animals and Disasters

  • 24、   A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics, and wars. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors ― or of people very different from our own ― can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than what can be found in most history books.

In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented: that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Franciso Goya was perhaps the first truly political artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May, 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people. Over a hundred years later, symbolic images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, Jose Clements Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros ― as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martinez ― showed these Mexican artists’ deep anger and sadness about social problems.

In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. Four hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand biblical stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic(伊斯兰教的)belief that statues are unholy(不神圣的;亵渎的).

1Which of the following sentences is WRONG according to the passage?

A.Art history concentrates on religious beliefs, emotions and psychology only.

B.Art can provide information about the everyday activities of ancient people.

C.Information and facts about politics are given objectively in history.

D.Franciso Goya was perhaps the first truly political artist.

A.personal and emotional opinions are expressed through it

B.it will make the viewers angry and sad about history

C.it can help us understand historical facts better

D.opinions about facts are not expressed

3The two pictures The Third of May, 1808 and Guernica mentioned in paragraph 2 show that _____.

    A.art is subjective

B.artists are very similar even over a hundred years

C.art can reflect political life of a country

    D.history books present objective information

4In paragraph 2, the underlined “another continent” refers to _____.

    A.Europe B.America

    C.Mexico D.Middle East

5The passage is mainly discussing _____.

A.the difference between general history and art history

    B.the development of art history

C.the influence of artists on art history

D.what we can learn from art

6It may be concluded from this passage that _____.

A.Islamic artists focus on creating architectural decorations with pictures of flowers or geometric (几何) forms

B.history teachers are more objective than artists

C.it is more difficult to study art history than general history

D.people and stories from the Bible were painted on churches and other buildings in order to popularize the Bible
