二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Wearing a caveman mask, Dr. John Marzluff walks across the campus at the University of Washington in Seattle. Crows (乌鸦) circle and squawk (尖叫), diving at him and away.

Beneath the mask, he smiles. Days before, he and his students, wearing caveman masks, trapped them and placed colored plastic bands on their legs. Then they released the unhappy birds. When the researchers wandered around campus without the masks, the crows they had caught and banded did not react to them. But when the same humans walked by while wearing the masks, the crows scolded loudly and dived at their “enemies”.

At first, only the banded birds reacted aggressively to the people in masks. But in later tests, more and more crows joined in, and even when the banded birds were not around. “Crows think and dream, fight and play, reason and take risks,” he says. “Their antics confuse us.”

This led him to study how crows’ brains work. He and his students wore one type of mask as they captured crows and brought them into the lab, training them to link that face with danger. Then a different kind of mask for more positive activities, such as feeding and caring. Then he worked with scientists at the university who scan animal brains to see which parts of a crow's brain do certain tasks. Surprisingly, the scientists found that when the crow saw the “danger” mask, one part of its brain became active. When the crow saw the “care and feeding” mask, a different part of its brain lit up. The team has shown that crows use the same parts of their brains for recognition that humans do — something that was not known before!

More than 10 years after the first mask experiment, campus crows still scold the “cavemen”. Crows also recognize people who are kind to them. Crows are always watching us... and they remember.

  • 22、   Raina Jain's STS project started in science class. Her teacher challenged teen and her classmates to find global problems in the news that lacked solutions. Raina, 17, zeroed in on colony collapse disorder in bees. This happens when worker bees abandon their hive, eventually causing the hive to die.

Raina visited a beekeeper, a friend of her parents. She wanted to observe this problem up close. “Every year, he loses 60 percent of his hives,” she learned. “That shocked me.”

Parasites play a role in colony collapse disorder. A chemical called thymol can help rid bees of the parasites. Beekeepers often leave out a thymol containing substance. Bees can apply it to themselves while cleaning. But that substance doesn't work the same way at all temperatures, Raina notes. On hot days, for instance, it releases higher levels of thymol-amounts that might harm bees. The substance also might limit bees' ability to fly.

Raina wondered if there was a better way to protect bees. She developed her own thymol-containing substance. Then she designed a 3D- printed beehive entrance that would coat the bees. She tested how fast her substance would degrade in the sun and wind by applying the substance to bee models. Raina even kept a beehive in her backyard to test the substance's effectiveness.

Now, hundreds of beekeepers around the United States are helping Raina further test her invention. “Probably the hardest part of my project was to get people to actually use it”, Raina says. “It took time and thousands of emails. But now further data collection is underway.”

D.To observe how a beekeeper raises bees.

    【3】Raina tested her thymol-containing substance on ________.

    A.artificial bees

    B.bees raised by herself

    C.the beehive in her backyard

    D.the 3D-printed beehive entrance

【4】What is Raina doing with her new invention at present?

    A.Putting it into practical use.

    B.Improving its effectiveness.

C.Finding out whether it works well.

D.Getting support for it from beekeepers.

  • 23、   Katherine Rooks remembers when she first learned that a punctuation mark could be so powerful The Denver-based writer had sent her high school-aged son a text message-coming home from school. “I could tell from his response that he was offended all of a sudden. And when he came home, he walked in the door, came over and said, ‘What did you mean by this?’” Rooks was confused how could a simple text message send confusion?

“And so we looked at the text together and I said, ‘Well, I meant, see you later, or something. I don’t remember exactly what it said.’ And he said, ‘But you ended with a period! I thought you were really angry!’” Rooks wasn’t angry, and she explained to her son that periods are how you end a sentence.

But in text messaging—at least for younger adults—periods do more than just end a sentence: they also can set a tone. Gretchen McCulloch, a linguist said that when it comes to text messaging, the period has lost its original purpose because rather than needing a symbol to indicate the end of a sentence, you can simply hit send at the end of your message. That doesn’t mean the period has lost all purposes in text messaging. Now it can be used to indicate the gravity of a situation or a sense of finality.

However, caution is needed, said McCulloch, noting that problems can start to arise when you combine a period with a positive emotion, such as “Sure.” or “Sounds good.” “Now you’ve got positive words and serious punctuation and the clash between them is what creates that sense of passive-aggression,” said McCulloch.

Our language has evolved, and “what we have done with our incredible linguistic genius is finding ways to insert some kind of emotional, interpersonal information into texting,” said Celia Klin, a psychology professor at Binghamton University. “And what we have is things like periods, emoticons and other kinds of punctuation. So people have repurposed the period to mean something else.” And that something else is passive-aggression.

【1】What left Rooks at a loss?

    A.Her son’s untimely coming home.

B.Her son’s heavy reliance on text messages.

C.Her son’s inability to adapt to high school life.

D.Her son’s unexpected reaction to the message.

【2】What did the son think of the period?

    A.It aroused his anger.

    B.It meant seriousness to him.

    C.It brought embarrassment to him.

D.It appeared in an improper position.

【3】What does the underlined word “clash” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Interval.

    B.Exchange.

    C.Mismatch.

    D.Association.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.The basic rules of punctuation

    B.Passive-aggression from punctuation

    C.A debate about language evolution

    D.Parents trouble with passive-aggression

  • 24、   The shadow play is a typical traditional entertainment that has survived and thrived over the centuries. It is taken as an earliest ancestor of modern cinema.

Legend has it that more than 2,000 years agoEmperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty was very depressed over the death of his favorite concubine(妃子).To help him get over his sadness, a minister made a puppet out of cotton and silk in the likeness of the concubine and projected its shadow on a curtain for the emperor to see. The show brought the emperor some comfort. He somehow believed the shadow was his lover’ spirit. This is thought to be the beginning of the shadow play.

One mouth tells stories of thousands of yearsa pair of hands operates millions of soldiers. This is how the shadow puppeteer works. Nicknamed “the business of the five”a shadow puppet group is made up of five people. One operates the puppets, one plays a Suona and a Yueqin, one plays the Banhu, one is in charge of percussion(打击乐器)instruments, and one sings.

During performances, “actors” are held close to a white curtain with their colored shadows cast on it by a strong light from behind. The operator plays five puppets at the same timeeach of which has three threads. Ten fingers handle fifteen threads. Moved by guiding sticksthe puppets play roles with musical accompaniment. The popularity of shadow play in some way lies in the equipment being light and easy to carry, the small number of people needed for a performance, and the flexible requirements for performance places. The plays can be quite dramatic and, when it comes to fairy tales or kungfu stories, the "actors" may be made to ride on clouds or perform unusual feats, to the great enjoyment of the audience, especially children.

The design of the figures follows traditional moral evaluation. The audience can tell a figure’s character by seeing his mask. Like the masks in Beijing Opera, a red mask represents honesty, a black mask, loyalty, and a white one, betrayal.

Nowadays, the shadow play has been industrialized and developed a series of tourist products for the promotion of Chinese culture and tourism.

1What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.A love story of Emperor Wudi. B.How to please an Emperor.

A.when roles are played without music

B.because the equipment is light to carry

C.when the puppets give lively performances

D.because the number of the operators is small

3What is the best title for the text?

A.The Rapid Development of Beijing Opera

C.The Business of the Five: A Shadow Puppet Group

D.Traditional Characters and Masks in Beijing Opera

4What is the author’s attitude towards the future of shadow play?
