二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、David Rees runs a very distinctive business. He charges customers $15 to sharpen their pencils to perfection, using a variety of tools.

I know what you’re thinking—is this a joke? The 39-year-old gets asked that question a lot. To clarify everything, he even created a special section on his website telling everyone he’s actually providing a real service.

You can supply your own pencil or you can have Rees sharpen one of his own favorite 2B pencils. After that, he mails it to you in a display tube with the shavings in a separate bag, and an authentic certificate which just happens to mention the pencil is so sharp as to be a dangerous object.

To achieve the desired result, the master sharpener uses all kinds of tools, including general sandpaper, pocket knives and even a special $ 450 sharpening machine. “It depends on what the customer wants to use his/her pencil for,” he says. That determines the most appropriate pencil-sharpening technique. Some customers buy pencils as inspirational symbols while others buy them because of their special memories of classic 2B pencils.

$15 to have a pencil sharpened is a bit expensive though, right? You’re not the only one who feels that way, and David’s unique business has really angered lots of people, who talk of inequality in America, saying it is so insane for the wealthy to pay $15 to sharpen a pencil. But others will say, “This is just our urge to put an end to the welfare state because new ideas arise along with the business.”

David admits his trade is sort of unusual. But there are those who actually value his service, as is proven by the over 500 orders he has gotten.

【1】How could David make money by sharpening pencils?

A.He invented new tools for the job.

B.He provided quality service for his customers.

C.He promoted his skill on his website.

D.He saved lots of time for other people.

【2】What can we infer from the words of David Rees in paragraph 4?

    A.He provides personalized services.

B.He knows all kinds of pencil users.

C.He values ideas behind the pencils.

    D.He always writes in pencil.

【3】What does the underlined word “insane” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Deliberate.

    B.Rewarding.

    C.Unreasonable.

    D.Irresponsible.

【4】What seems to be the author’s attitude to David Rees’ trade?

A.It’s a waste of time and money.

    B.It needs further improvement.

    C.It’s awfully expensive.

    D.It’s a fancy service.

  • 22、   It’s reported that the American College Board has made several changes to the SAT test to help more poor students receive higher education. It offers a scoring criterion beyond its own SAT test, which measures only oral and math skills. The new tool is designed to help admissions officers find if applicants have risen above limitations in their social or economic circumstances by expressing a particular characteristic: resourcefulness(足智多谋).

The new criterion, called ECD, has been tried by 50 colleges over the past year and will be carried out by 150 institutions this fall. Relying on public data , it looks at 15 factors(因素) in neighborhoods and schools that might passively influence a candidate’s college readiness. These statistics include crime rates, education levels, joblessness, and the family members that receive food stamps. It applicants come from a highly disadvantaged background yet have proper but perhaps not high SAT scores , a college might then admit them.

Resourcefulness shows an ability to seek support outside one’s self. It requires a clear purpose in learning. The new tool “shines a light on students who have shown remarkable resourcefulness to overcome challenges and achieve more with less,” says David Coleman, the College Board’s president.

The ECD also has the advantage of not taking race into consideration in admissions, a practice being increasingly closed off by the Supreme Court and many states. At the same time, in stressing a key quality for academic success, it may help prevent discrimination in admissions.

The tool is not an absolute measure of resourcefulness. It misses other types of circumstances, such as personal or family problems. Colleges must weigh many factors in admissions. Still, it could lead to a greater focus on character in education beyond the traditional pursuit (追求) of knowledge and career skills. Graduates who have stood out despite their hardships are highly desired by today’s employers.

1Which people can benefit from the new criterion?

A.Students from poor families. B.Students doing well at maths.

C.Students having much money. D.Students with good spoken skills.

2What are the new criteria when judging a candidate?

A.The attitudes to schools. B.The remarks from colleges.

C.The difficulties a candidate will face. D.The institutions a candidate will study in.

3What is the advantage of ECD?

A.It can make applicants successful. B.It can improve the ability of races.

C.It can provide clear learning purposes. D.It can treat applicants equally.

    4Which graduates do employers prefer?

    A.Those with excellent qualities.

    B.Those having experienced hardships.

C.Those making progress in difficult situations.

D.Those with the traditional pursuit of knowledge.

  • 23、Take ToursUSA>East Coast ToursNew York, NY>2-Day Niagara Falls Tour from New York or New Jersey

This was a good tour in terms of value of money and overall experience provided. Only one negative experience is stopping at a food court at “One Niagara Welcome Center”. It is totally stealing.

    I recommend this tour!

    _________________________________________________________________________________

Tour guide was very helpful. However, the money charged for admission fee is way more than the actual admission cost. I was charged $109 per adult and $ 65 for kids for a family of four. This is not correct. This money should be refunded as you already charge $ 12 per day per person as the service fee.

    _________________________________________________________________________________

It was my 2nd trip with Take Tours for Niagara and it was great to be back with an awesome experience. What I would like to highlight is that there should be more time given for staying after Maid of the Mist since there is a lot to walk and explore around the Niagara Falls.

    _________________________________________________________________________________

Our guide Kun was great at his job. Explained all the details very well. He made sure there was plenty of time to explore all places. He gave wakeup call in the morning and followed up with everyone to make sure everyone was on schedule. Restroom breaks, breakfast/ lunch/ snack/ dinner breaks planned very well. I definitely recommend this package for the price offered.

    A.Mohit.

  • 24、   Playing video interactive games, and later computer games, has been a big part of people’s lives ever since the birth of Pong and gaming consoles (游戏机) in the early 1970s. But games have progressed steadily since those early days. Now online games are being played worldwide by people of all ages.

While many people tend to think of gamers as people who sit alone on their couches and anonymous to other players, the opposite is actually true according to the BBC. With the rise in popularity of games, people, especially for those in Generation Z, have built communities and friendships with their fellow players. These connections have become a social lifeline during these times of social distancing and lockdowns (活动限制).

While TV and Netflix help people pass the time, there is no interaction between people like the ones found in gaming and the amount of time people play has seriously increased during the COVID-19 pandemic (疫情). In fact, in the US, gamers are now playing an average of 6 hours and 46 minutes weekly. And the numbers keep going up.

Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, where people can watch other people play videogames in real time webcasts and can chat with other viewers, actually clocked 5 billion hours of viewed content in the second quarter of 2020. That was an 83 percent increase from 2019 and a new record. But this increase in gaming is about much more than just entertainment. “This isn’t just out of boredom but an inner desire to be social. New gaming capabilities allow people to communicate with one another virtually,” said Nigel Burmeister, vice president of Limelight Networks. That’s because humans are naturally social and human contacts are necessary for our mental health.

Rosemary “Nekkra” Kelley, a 25-year-old gamer, told USA Today that she’s spending a lot more time playing games because her work has been curtailed due to the cancellation of live events. In her extra time, she has been playing Pokémon Sword and Animal Crossings on her Nintendo Switch.

【1】What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 2?

    A.Gamers appear to be lonely.

    B.Gamers take friendship seriously.

    C.Playing games benefits players.

    D.Some gamers hate social interaction.

【2】What is the disadvantage of Netflix?

A.It causes people to waste time.

    B.Its content holds little attraction.

    C.It lacks newly-developed games.

D.It gives people no chance to interact.

【3】Why are Nigel Burmeister’s words mentioned?

A.To state what research he takes up.

B.To analyze why Twitch is popular.

C.To make people aware of their nature.

D.To encourage people to interact with one another.

【4】What does the underlined word “curtailed” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Shortened.

    B.Simplified.

    C.Adapted.

    D.Influenced.
