21、Winemakers in the Rioja area in northern Spain make some of the best wine in the world. But in recent years, winemakers there have been having difficulty producing good wine. They say when the temperature was cooler, the wine tasted better, but it was 2.2 degrees Celsius higher than average in 2022. Now, a genetic research has shown that grape vines living for more than 35 years are better able to deal with high temperatures brought by climate change.
Researchers like Pablo Carbonell think older grape vines may be able to grow better in higher temperatures. Carbonell looks at rows of gray shapes on his computer screen. Among them was a green rectangle, which represents a kind of grape vine that produces grapes that take longer to ripen, even in warmer conditions.A longer ripeness period is what winemakers want. The current vines produce grapes that are ready to pick too early. Such grapes do not make wine that has the right color and smell and has too much alcohol.
People who work in the vineyards have long crossed old vines with new ones. Now they are working with special laboratories to find a climate-resistant vine. One of them is the Vine and Wine Research Institute, known as the ICVV in Spain. The lab is working to keep the Spanish wine making industry alive as temperatures rise. The scientists there are studying the genomes(基因组)of commonly used grapes in wine and looking for traits,or qualities, that might permit the vines to survive in a warmer climate instead of looking for mutation(变异)that causes diseases.
In addition to the genetic research, scientists are also working on different planting methods.A winery called RODA is planting vines in a curve instead of a straight line. The hope is that plants will soak up more water this way. The new vineyard is made up of vines that were over 100 years old and moved from another place.
Maria Santolaya is an agricultural engineer and part of RODA’s technical team. She said the hot weather was very problematic. But,“our biggest concern,”she added,“is what will happen in 20 or 30 years. We don’t really know how things will come out.”

22、The popularity of Facebook has caused a shift in how people realize themselves: the “like” button has become nothing more than a self-esteem (自尊) booster. 【1】 It can take years and years, but there are shortcuts you can use to achieve it.
【2】. You’re not arrogant (自大的) if you love yourself. In fact, arrogance is often the foundation of low self-esteem and insecurity. Try this exercise: stand in front of the mirror and tell your reflection everything you love about yourself. Accept what you don’t like about yourself. This may feel uncomfortable at first, but change often does.
Do you socialize with negative people? 【3】. This may seem unfair, but those negative people will simply strengthen what you don’t like about yourself. People like to socialize with happy, positive people. The happiest people in life are the ones that look at what they have, not what they don’t have.
There are a lot of people who aren’t aware they have a negative voice in their head.
【4】. Whenever you hear a negative comment, immediately replace it with a positive one. Your brain is like a computer: whatever command you input, it responds, so if you ask it a question like “why do I always mess up?” your brain will find plenty of examples to support it.
Celebrating your successes is another good way. We’re often so busy in life that we seldom take the time to stop and really reflect on what we’ve achieved. Take the time once a day to ask yourself what you’re proud of having achieved that day. 【5】 Remember that it’s not the outcome that’s always important, but the process.
A.Learn to love yourself.
B.Catch your negative self-talk.
C.Appreciate how far you’ve come.
D.If so, consider finding new friends.
E.When self-esteem is high, we lose our fear of envy.
F.Of course not, few people like socializing with negative people.
G.But what’s important is to develop high self-esteem from inner.
23、 Sudoku (数独) puzzles give your brain a hard time: Every number from 1 to 9 must appear in each of the nine horizontal (横向的) rows, in each of the nine vertical columns and in each of the nine boxes.
For many of us, this can be a reason for a headache, but in the very rare case of a German man, a Sudoku puzzle even caused seizures (痉挛).
In a new case study from the University of Munich, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Berend Feddersen introduces a student who was 25 years old when he was buried by a snow slide during a ski tour. For 15 minutes, he didn’t get enough oxygen, which severely damaged certain parts of his brain. “He had to receive treatment on the scene. Luckily he survived,” says Feddersen, the author of the study.
Weeks after the accident, when the young man was ready for recovery treatment, something bizarre happened: When the patient solved Sudoku puzzles, he suddenly had seizures of his left arm — something the medical world hadn’t seen before.
Feddersen explains: “In order to solve a Sudoku, the patient used parts of his brain which are responsible for vision-space tasks. But exactly those brain parts had been damaged in the accident and then caused the seizures once they were used.”
This particular case is an example of what doctors call reflex epilepsy (反射性癫痫), according to Dr. Jacqueline French, professor from NYU Langone School of Medicine.
“You have to have an injury of your brain first, and then seizures like that can happen,” she says.
In the meantime, the patient from the case study stopped solving Sudoku puzzles forever and has been seizure-free for more than five years. “Fortunately, he can do crossword puzzles. He never had problems with those,” Feddersen says.
【1】In the accident, the student ______.
A. began to experience seizures in his left arm
B. got the vision-space part of his brain damaged
C. had to be sent to hospital as soon as possible
D. found his Sudoku ability seriously weakened
【2】It can be learned from the text that ______.
A. the man cannot complete crossword puzzles now
B. it is Sudoku playing that brings about his seizures
C. the man’s symptoms are common and widely observed
D. the seizures cause much trouble to the man’s daily life
【3】This text can be best described as______.
A. a medical test B. a warning to skiers
C. a news report D. a research paper
24、 Getting stuck with gifts we do not want is no small problem. In a survey across 14 countries in Europe, meanwhile, 1 in 7 said they were unhappy with what they received for Christmas, yet more than half simply kept the gifts.
Why can’t more gifts be passed along to people who appreciate them? People in a study published in the Journal of Consumer Behaviour, for instance, used such words as guilty, lazy, thoughtless and disrespectful in describing their feelings about regifting. Popular culture casts it as taboo (禁忌), as well.
However, our research with Francis J. Flynn, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, suggests the shame associated with regifting is largely unwarranted. Indeed, our research consistently tells us that people overestimate the negative consequences.
We asked people to imagine themselves as a “giver,” who gives someone a gift card and later learned it had been regifted. The general attitude of the original givers was: “It’s your gift, do what you want with it.” Next, we asked givers to compare regifting a supposed wristwatch with throwing it in the trash. For the original givers, regifting the watch was a much less offensive act than trashing it.
Finally, we invited to our lab at Stanford people who had recently received presents, and divided the people into two groups. When we gave the first group an opportunity to regift that present, 9% did so. When we gave the second group the same opportunity, we added that it was “National Regifting Day”. It wasn't really National Regifting Day, but the group didn’t know that: 30% of them agreed to regift.
Everyone has received unwanted gifts in their lives, and generally we will receive more in the future. Our research offers a simple solution to that problem. This holiday season, consider regifting, and encourage receivers of your gifts to do the same if what you gave them isn't quite what they hoped for.
【1】Why does the author mention the study in Journal of Consumer Behaviour?
A.To highlight the importance of regifting.
B.To show people’s attitudes to regifting.
C.To challenge the rightness of regifting.
D.To express his concern for regifting.
【2】What is the meaning of the underlined word “unwarranted”?
A.Unnecessary. B.Uncertain.
C.Unimportant. D.Unconscious.
【3】What do we know about the research?
A.9% simply kept unwanted gifts.
B.30% didn’t know National Regifting Day.
C.Givers generally didn’t mind regifting.
D.Receivers tended to trash unwanted gifts.
【4】What can we conclude from the text?
A.Regifting is offensive. B.Regifting is forbidden.
C.Regifting is popular. D.Regifting is acceptable.
