二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How can we keep up with the pace of change today? For Bradley Staats, the answer is easy: we all need to keep learning.

“I came to appreciate that it was the story of learning. That’s what dragged me back to learn. I’d been in investment banking, I thought I had the knowledge to do what needed to be done, but really struggled over time,” he recalls. “Why do we get in our own way?”

Now Professor at the University of North Carolina, Staats has published his conclusions in a new book, “Never Stop Learning”. In it, he thinks highly of the virtues of being a “dynamic(积极的) learner”.

    Become a Learning Dynamo

“Think of them as the four Fs,” he says. “That you’re focused, you’re fast, you’re frequent and you’re flexible.” Collectively, these four elements make it easier for us to learn new skills and ways of working.

    The Importance of Failure

Staats presents some basic elements to achieving this ideal. The first of these involves another F: failure. “If you talk to people about how important failure is to learning, you’ll get the head nodding. But we tend to have a fear of failure, so bad overpowers good.”

    Learning to Ask Questions

“When we ask a question, it shows that we don’t know something, and that people will actually think less of us. What’s interesting is that the research suggests it’s just the opposite. It lets them be an expert and share their perspective with us,” he points out.

    Learning a Falsification Mindset

Staats advises us “to have strong opinions, weakly held”, which helps to have what he calls “a falsification mindset”. “A good scientist usually has a hypothesis(假设) first and then tries to falsify it,” he says. For example, you want to set up your operation in India. So you not only want to think about why that’s a good idea, but spend a lot of time asking questions why that might be a bad idea. Why might I be wrong?

【1】How was Bradley Staats in investment banking?

    A.Quite relaxed.

    B.Rather hard.

    C.Fairly, pleased.

    D.Rarely hopeful.

【2】What effect would “the four Fs” have on us?

    A.Disturbing.

    B.Challenging.

    C.Inspiring.

    D.Critical.

【3】In which aspect do we benefit from learning to ask questions?

    A.Building our confidence.

    B.Showing our wisdom.

    C.Gaining our experience.

    D.Promoting our understanding.

【4】What makes “a falsification mindset” received by scientists?

A.That they can benefit from the reflective practice.

B.That a failure rate is easy to measure.

C.That they can eventually conclude a truth.

D.That active mindsets surely mean great success.

  • 22、   Have you ever sat down in a restaurant and felt instantly drawn to a particular dish on the menu? The reason might be something as simple as that you love the dish's main ingredient, but it's often more than that.

Scientists are finding that the way food is presented can make a big difference. In one study, for example, party guests were given a glass of a drink called mango lassi. Half the guests were told the lassi was healthy. The rest were told it was unhealthy. Those who had the “healthy” drink considered it 55% less enjoyable than those who drank the “unhealthy” one, though the drinks were exactly the same.

People's choices around what to eat are influenced by lots of small factors unconsciously. But we can make those choices more conscious by arming ourselves with information.

Agriculture accounts for about 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions (排放) warming the planet. But not all foods have equal influences. Globally, the production of animal-based foods accounts for about two-thirds of agricultural emissions, while plant-based foods generally have lower environmental influences.

Increasing the share of plant-based foods in our diets is therefore a key step in reducing agriculture's pressure on climate. That doesn't mean giving up meat, though. We can eat less animal-based food and more plants.

By examining how food decisions are made, scientists have learned that simple pushes can change people's behavior in big ways. Restaurants, hotels, universities, and even cities have begun applying the latest behavioral science to help consumers cut their carbon footprint by choosing more sustainable (可持续的) foods. Burger King began a trial of the plant-based Impossible Burger. At Seattle Pacific University, campus food service provider Sodexo doubled the size of its plant-rich food station.

1Accordign to scientists, people tend to choose some food or drink mainly because _______.

A.it’s good for their health B.it’s good for the environment

C.they are attracted by its color D.they like its ingredient and how it’s presented

2What can we infer about animal-based foods?

A.They are harmful to the environment.

B.They are the main reason for climate change.

C.They provide more nutrients than plant-based foods.

D.They are less consumed compared to plant-based foods.

3What does the author suggest people do?

A.Pay attention to how food is cooked.

B.Choose healthy foods to live a longer life.

C.Consider climate change when deciding what to eat.

D.Give up meat to reduce pressure on the environment.

4What does the last paragraph focus on?

    A.Burger King's new plant-based burgers.

B.Scientists' new findings on people's food decisions.

C.How consumers' food decisions are influenced by small factors.

D.The society's efforts to help people make eco-friendly food decisions.

  • 23、   It's no secret that social media can make the lines on what's reality and what's fantasy unclear. But new research at York's Faculty of Health now shows how young women interact with images online can affect how they feel about their own bodies.

The research appears in the journal Body Image. The study was conducted by Jennifer Mills, associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Jacqueline Hogue. It focused on young women, aged 18 to 27 years old, who liked or commented on photos of people whom they considered to be more attractive than themselves.

The research included 118 female college students from countries all over the world. Participants reported their ages, diverse ethnic groups, whether English was their first language, and years of education in an online questionnaire six weeks before the experiment. Each participant was given a questionnaire where they had to indicate how satisfied or dissatisfied they were with their appearance or body image by using a specific standard.

Participants were then randomly assigned into one of two experimental conditions. One group of participants were asked to log into Facebook and Instagram for a period of five or more minutes and find one peer (同龄人) who they felt was more attractive than themselves. After looking at the photos, each participant was asked to leave a comment of their choice. In the other group, participants were asked to do the same task but this time they commented on a post of a family member whom they did not think was more attractive than themselves.

The results showed that these young adult women felt worse about their own appearance after looking at social media pages of someone that they considered to be more attractive than themselves. Even if they felt bad about themselves before they came into the study, on average, they still felt worse after completing the task. However, the data showed that participants’ views on their own appearance were not affected when interacting with the posts of their family members.

【1】Why did the researchers most probably do the study?

A.To know social media's influence on young women's health.

B.To know online body images’ influence on young women.

C.To know how young women interact with images online.

D.To know why young women comment on online images.

【2】What do we know about the participants of the study?

A.They were asked about their backgrounds before the experiment.

B.They considered themselves more attractive than others.

C.They all used English as their mother tongue.

D.They were divided into two groups randomly by age.

【3】What do the finds of the study suggest?

A.Young women like posting attractive images on social media.

B.Family members help young women build up their confidence.

C.Young women can easily realize their shortcomings the Internet.

D.Comparing to peers online can affect how young women regard themselves.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

A.Social media may negatively affect the way young women view themselves.

B.Young women enjoy expressing their opinions on social media.

C.Young women’s views on their bodies can be easily influenced.

D.Social media makes young women’s images more attractive.

  • 24、   Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But,according to a new study,we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.

Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now,the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as 172,000 a year.

The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do,as well as the hours they are working,to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income 30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.

By analysing the numbers,it found the average mother works 119 hours a week,40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18,it found that,on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and finished at around 11pm.

To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour,it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on,including housekeeper,part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer.Being a part-time lawyer,at 48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the“mum jobs”,with psychologist(心理学家)a close second.

It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 per cent making emotional(情感的)demand as the hardest thing about motherhood.

Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends.

The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother’s Day.The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending,but children are also sources of great joy and happiness.Investing(投入)in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.

1How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?

    A.30,000. B.142,000. C.172,000. D.202,000.

2The biggest challenge for most mothers is from______.

A.emotional demand B.low pay for work C.heavy workload D.lack of training

3What is stressed in the last paragraph?

A.Mothers’ importance shows in family all year long.

B.The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.

C.Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated.

D.Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.
