二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   When Carnevali’s son started at St Mary primary school in London, he was alarmed to find that pupils were sometimes kept indoors at break times, despite a large playground.

The reason was the nearby six-lane road, which has up to 100,000 vehicles thundering past the school each day. As evidence mounted about the impact of gas waste on children’s health, the headteacher restricted time outside.

Carnevali and other parents decided to take action. Within months they had crowdfunded almost £100,000, and last month a 126-metre “living wall” of 12,000 plants was installed (安装) as part of a clean-air initiative at the school. They hope the wall will transform one of London’s most polluted schools into one of its greenest.

St Mary’s living wall is one of many being installed around the country by local authorities and private developers. Tennis fans may have noticed two enormous living walls placed on both sides of the giant outdoor screen at this year’s Wimbledon championships.

“Demand is definitely growing. It’s being mainly driven by local authorities, but also a greater awareness in the private sector of the need for sustainable architecture.” According to Benz Kotzen of the Green Roofs and Living Walls Centre at the University of Greenwich, “We need every tool to try to improve things, and there just isn’t enough capacity in urban environments to create green infrastructure at ground level.”

Living walls range from simple wire structures to support climbing plants to complicated modular systems, using soil and solar-powered irrigation (灌溉). The cost ranges from £200 to £800 per square metre. Living walls will die if they’re not maintained regularly, but the challenge is that it must be done at height.

Not everyone is a fan of the trend towards vertical (垂直的) gardens.

“They’re not a solution, except for the wealthy,” said Mick Crawley, professor of plant ecology at Imperial College London. “There are much cheaper and more effective ways of improving air quality. Local authorities struggling to pay for essential services will be better advised to plant trees.”

【1】What made the headteacher restrict children’s break times outside?

    A.A jammed playground.

    B.Poor air quality.

    C.Constant traffic flow.

    D.A tight schedule.

【2】What do we know about St Mary’s living wall?

A.It is installed to increase biodiversity.

B.It is designed to make the school green.

C.It is meant for the Wimbledon championships.

D.It is funded by local authorities and private developers.

【3】What is the challenge for maintaining a living wall?

    A.Its cost.

    B.Its market.

    C.Its structure.

    D.Its height.

【4】What is Mick Crawley’s attitude to the vertical garden?

    A.Disapproving.

    B.Uncertain.

    C.Flexible.

    D.Casual.

  • 22、When it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes, which should come first — changing your diet or becoming more physically active?

Previous studies suggested that providing people with too much information about nutrition and physical activity at once tends to be discouraging. That has led to the popularity of advising people to make changes gradually, and set smaller goals.

So the scientists divided 200 inactive participants who were age 45 or older into four groups. One group was instructed about making diet and fitness changes at the same time, the second group was taught about diet changes first, then fitness changes four months later, the third group changed their exercise habits first and made changes in their eating habits four months later, and the final, control group was not instructed about either diet or fitness changes but about how to manage their stress.

The researchers tracked the groups for a full year. Compared to the control group, the three intervention (干预) groups made healthy changes in their diet. Those who changed their fitness habits first significantly increased the amount of exercise they received daily compared to the other groups after four months. However, at the end of the year, the group that changed both diet and exercise at the same time was the only one that met the nationally recommended targets for both exercise and nutrition levels, while those who worked on improving their nutrition first were unable to meet the recommended levels of fitness after a year. The researchers suspect that changes to diet are easier to make than changes to physical activity.

The findings show, however, that pairing diet and exercise changes may help to overcome some of the barriers people face in adding more physical activity into their lives. If folks change diet and exercise orderly, the scientists say, they may end up placing more importance on the first set of behavior changes and feel less pressured to address the second set.

【1】The advice mentioned in the second paragraph seemed .

    A.popular

    B.dangerous

    C.scientific

    D.unsatisfactory

【2】Which group made progress earlier than other groups in increasing the amount of daily exercise?

    A.The first group.

    B.The second group.

    C.The third group.

    D.The control group.

【3】The reason why those improving their nutrition first failed to meet the levels of fitness after a year might be that .

    A.they might be very lazy

B.they wouldn’t like to change their behavior

C.it is much harder to change physical activity

D.they might put on weight before changing their physical activity

【4】Which of the following does the author probably approve of?

    A.Pairing diet and exercise changes.

    B.Becoming more physically active first.

C.Changing diet and exercise following a fixed order.

D.Changing diet first and placing more importance on it.

  • 23、Worrying new figures from a national survey conducted by Kingswim have revealed 51 percent of Australian adults can’t swim 50 metres or more without stopping. However, the news is better for our kids, with statistics showing that childhood swimming lessons are paying off.

“These statistics are reflected in the Royal Life Saving 2018 Drowning Report, with 32 percent of drowning deaths occurring in the 55+ age range compared to 19 percent for under 25s,” says Kingswim Marketing Manager. Rowena Thomasson.“While these are terrible statistics it’s not all sad news; the survey revealed younger demographics(群体) had a much higher swimming ability, which correlated with the swimming lessons they received as children.”

Kidsafe Victoria CEO Melanie Courtney says that swimming lessons are a critical part of comprehensive home pool safety defence. “Children can drown quickly and silently in just a few centimeters of water. Swimming lessons, together with active adult supervision—both in and around water—first aid knowledge and a well-maintained pool barrier are critical elements in keeping your family safe over the coming summer season.”

Mum of three, Jenny Ong says she knows all too well the anxiety caused by not being able to swim as an adult. “Neither my partner or I am confident in the water so teaching our girls to swim was always going to be difficult for us,” she says. “I won’t swim anywhere, I can’t touch the bottom and I don’t want my children to feel the same uneasiness in the water. My eldest two now both take regular lessons which they absolutely love and I’m relieved to know they’re mastering a lifesaving skill.”

The research proved that children with professional swimming lessons to subsidise any lessons at home were much more confident in their ability to swim as an adult. “Close to half of people aged between 18 and 24 say they had swimming lessons through three or more channels, with 84 percent believing they received adequate swimming lessons as a child — demonstrating how crucial it is for children to receive professional swimming lessons in addition to anything taught at home,” says Thomasson.

【1】What can be learned from Paragraph 2?

    A.Childhood swimming lessons work.

    B.Drowning happens frequently.

    C.The Drowning Report is disappointing.

D.More children get drowned than adults.

【2】According to Melanie, how many factors are there to ensure home pool safety defence?

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

【3】What’s Jenny Ong’s attitude towards her kids’ lessons?

    A.Anxious.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Neutral.

    D.Contradictory.

【4】Which of the following can replace the underlined part “to subsidise” in the last paragraph?

    A.To replace.

    B.Added to.

    C.To make up.

    D.Giving way to.

  • 24、   It is possible that interstellar(星际的)space explorers could face problems communicating with all the arrivals, their spoken language having changed in isolation(与世隔绝)along the way.

Therefore, a new paper by two American scholars Andrew McKenzie and Jeffrey Punske recommends that such crews include members with knowledge of what is likely to occur and how to adapt. They co-authored the article “Language Development During Interstellar Travel”, in which they discuss the concept of language change over time.

In a recent interview, McKenzie gamed it out.

“If you’ re on a spaceship for 10 generations; new concepts will emerge, new social issues will come up, and people will create ways of talking about them,” McKenzie said, and these will become the vocabulary particular to the ship. People on Earth might never know about these words. And the further away you get, the less you’re going lo talk to people back home.

So if we have Earth English and spaceship English, you will have to learn a little Earth English to send messages back, or to read the information that came with the spaceship.

“Also, keep in mind that the language back on Earth is going to change, too. So they may well be communicating like we’d be using Latin-communicating with this version of the language nobody uses.”

The authors also point out that an adaptation in the form of sign language will be needed for use with and among crew members who, genetics tell us,are sure to be born deaf.

“Every new spaceship will essentially offload linguistic(语言学)immigrants to a foreign land. Given the certainly that issues such as whether they will be discriminated will arise, and the uncertainty of exactly how they will progress, we strongly suggest that any crew exhibit strong levels of linguistic training in addition to simply knowing the required languages. There will be need for an informed linguistic policy on board that can be maintained without referring back to Earth-based regulations.”

If a study of the linguistic changes aboard ship could be performed, it would “add to its scientific value,” McKenzie and Punske conclude.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “game it out” mean?

    A.Offer a new concept.

    B.Make a further study.

    C.Give a detailed explanation.

    D.Lose the game completely.

【2】What will happen to space travellers?

    A.They will forget Earth English.

B.They will be using sign language.

C.They may have their own language system.

D.They may make adaptations to Earth English.

【3】How can we solve the problem of interstellar immigrants?

    A.Through Earth-based linguistic policy.

    B.Through adequate language training.

    C.By knowing the required language.

    D.By referring to informed rules.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Why space travelers change their language.

B.How language is changed in the future time.

C.The language challenge during interstellar travel.

D.New concepts of language created in a spaceship.
