二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A new study suggests that pollution of all kinds kills nearly 9 million people worldwide each year. Air pollution from industrial processes and the expansion of cities accounted for about 75% of the deaths, researchers found. The study was based on examinations of worldwide death rates and pollution levels.

The study separated traditional pollutants from modern pollutants. Examples of traditional pollutants are indoor smoke or wastewater. Modern pollutants include air pollution from vehicles or industrial activities and poisonous chemicals. The researchers found that deaths from traditional pollutants are dropping worldwide. But they remain a major problem in Africa and some other developing countries. In some countries, state programs to cut indoor air pollution and improvements in sanitation (卫生) have helped reduce death rates. In Ethiopia and Nigeria, for example, such efforts cut deaths by two-thirds between 2000 and 2019, the study found.

Modern kinds of pollution are rising in most countries, especially developing ones, the researchers said. Deaths caused by modern pollutants — heavy metals, agricultural chemicals and carbon emissions—are “skyrocketing,” said study co-writer Rachael Kupka. She heads the New York-based Global Alliance on Health and Pollution. Kupka said deaths linked to modern pollutants had risen 66% since 2000.

“Nine million deaths is a lot of deaths,” Philip Landrigan told The Associated Press about the study’s results. He is director of the Global Public Health Program at Boston College in Massachusetts. “The bad news is that it’s not decreasing,” Landrigan added. “We’re making gains in the easy stuff, and we’re seeing the more difficult stuff, outdoor industrial air pollution and chemical pollution, still going up.”

The study makes several suggestions for ways to cut the number of deaths. These include creating better recording and reporting methods and stronger government policies to reduce pollution linked to industrial activities and vehicle emissions.

“We absolutely know how to solve pollution problems,” said the study co-author Richard Fuller. “What’s missing is political will.”

【1】What can be learned from the study about pollution?

A.Air pollution killed 9 million people last year.

B.Cutting indoor air pollution is the best policy.

C.Traditional pollution is very serious in Nigeria.

D.Traditional pollutants cause less death than before.

【2】What does the underlined word “skyrocketing” probably mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Improving.

    B.Increasing.

    C.Reducing.

    D.Worsening.

【3】What can be inferred from Philip Landrign’s words?

A.It is easy to fight modern pollution.

    B.Outdoor air pollution is decreasing.

    C.Modern pollution still concerns people.

D.It is hard to tell the reasons for pollution.

【4】What might be talked about in the paragraph that follows?

    A.Methods to reduce pollution.

    B.Government’s response to pollution.

    C.Suggestions for industrial activities.

D.The damage caused by vehicle emissions.

  • 22、Greg Evans started to study film at Ryerson University, but had a change of heart and switched to social work at George Brown College in second year.Yet the college recognized only one of Evans' general-interest credits(学分) from Ryerson , and also made him take English all over again although he had passed it at university.

“So I spent time and money taking a course I had already taken before”, complained Evans."The system really needs to change." Evans was part of a chorus of Ontario students on Monday cheering a new $ 73.7 million five-year plan to help students switch from college to university, and from university to college.

After years' of urging from students, the Ontario government set up a new Credit Transfer Innovation loud to help students move back and forth between the more hands-on courses of community college to the often broader academic focus of a university degree." We hear horror stories about students who can't get recognition from one institution for a very similar course at another, and in one case I believe the same professor was teaching them both," noted Malloy after announcing the new fund.

Individual colleges and universities have decided on nearly 500 joint deals to honor each other's credits in certain courses. Each school is required to set targets for more credit-transfer agreements, and link these increases to provincial funding.

More than 4,000 college graduates transfer (转换) to university in Ontario every year twice as many as eight years ago, noted Justin Fox, president of the College Student Alliance.Yet Ontario universities and colleges have been cautious about transferring credits, in part to avoid copying each other's courses, noted Bonnie Patterson, president of the Council of Ontario Universities ,who welcomed the increased flexibility.

【1】What happened when Greg Evans switched to social work at George Brown College?

    A. He was considered to be unqualified for social work.

    B. His previous credits were not all recognized.

    C. He wasn't able to get enough credits.

    D. His English didn't reach the required standard.

    【2】According to Paragraph 3, Malloy believes _____________

    A. it is time that the system was changed

    B. the same professor can't teach in different schools

    C. students should focus on their chosen courses

    D. the students' stories are horrible

【3】Ontario universities and colleges have been cautious about transferring credits partly to _____________.

    A. avoid accepting unqualified students

    B. keep their similar courses

    C. prevent courses becoming similar

    D. attract famous professors

【4】What attitude does Bonnie Patterson have towards the transferring system?

    A. He is strongly against it

B.He is very doubtful about it

    C. He thinks it is too flexible

D.He supports it for its flexibility

  • 23、   The American poet Louise Gluck, whose works employ he power of myth to solve some of our darkest human concerns, has been awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Gluck, 77, is the author of 12 collections of poetry, including the poem The Wild Iris, which won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. In Averno, a poem that wrestles with the isolation that comes with age, she writes how children "wink at each other" as they "listen to the old one, talking about the spirit because he can't remember the word for chair." In Monologue at Nine A.M., she describes the end of a relationship — "his poached egg staring like a dying eye,hi toast untouched."

Stephanie Burt, an English professor at Harvard University, praised Gluck's ability to explore the foundations of emotions. "She's someone who's been able to make emotional states vivid on the page without sacrificing intellect," said Burt. "A Louise Gluck poem is recognizable: It is almost always in free verse (诗体). It is often, but not always, sad, and it brings us to some kind of realization about the sources or consequences of its feelings."

Born in New York in 1943, Gluck published her first collection of poetry, Firstborn, in 1968, quickly defining her reputation as a poet of remarkable technical precision who employed straightforward language to get at the heart of deep concern: loneliness, rejection, divorce, death.

In the decades since, she has become one of the country's most celebrated literary figures. In addition to the Pulitzer, she won a National Book Award for the collection Faithful and Virtuous Night in 2014.

Few poets have tried as hard as she has not to repeat herself. And her strongest books are really different from one another," said Burt. "She's someone you can read straight through without getting bored, even though every page sounds like her."

【1】How many poems by Gluck are mentioned in the text?

    A.Three.

    B.Four.

    C.Five.

    D.Six.

【2】What can we learn about Gluck from the text?

  • 24、Social media has completely taken over everyday life, affecting how society runs and changing individuals in ways that even they can feel. While social media can act as a platform for people to express themselves, it can also be overwhelming, especially for high school teens.

To teenager Bryson Lan, deleting social media helped eliminate a significant distraction in his routine and keep up with teachers. “I was scrolling (滚动) through social networking sites so much,” Lan said. “I was also starting to struggle since I entered my high school year. When school started, I was super overwhelmed (不知所措的), and I was just not ready for it.

Most teenagers fear that by eliminating these apps, they will miss out on connections with their peers and feel a significant loss to their social life. However, Lan found he didn’t miss anything during his time without social media.

Another problem with social media is the amount of “junk content” posted. People are regularly posting and updating on social media, and much of the content has no meaning to other viewers and is ultimately a time suck.

However, social media isn’t all negative. Social media can be a place to develop passions and boost creativity. For example, Lan found his interest in photography blossom after seeing works from other photographers on social media. “Social media is a good place where you can have a portfolio (作品集) or upload your works,” Lan said. “A lot of people have photography accounts or art accounts. In some ways, I think it actually furthers your hobby.”

The vast audience that social media can reach brings convenience and effectiveness in the spread of art. Although some people might be discouraged by other artists’ impressive works, Lan is inspired to produce better photographs.

“Thanks to this revolutionary development of social media, we can enjoy a world where everyone is closer than before,” Lan said. “But we also need to have the skills to make good use of social media, and that depends on each person’s efforts.”

【1】What did getting rid of social media bring Lan?

    A.More distractions.

    B.Confusion about life.

    C.A smaller social circle.

    D.More attention on his studies.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “a time suck” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.A waste of time.

    B.A timetable.

    C.A lack of time.

    D.A time switch.

【3】What’s Lan’s attitude towards social media?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Objective.

    D.Supportive.

【4】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Most teenagers’ opinions on social media.

B.The effects social media has on teenagers.

    C.Innovative development of social media.

D.The problems social media brings people.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ms Hart stood in front of her class on the very first day of school and told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students, saying that she loved them all the same, treating them all alike. And that was impossible because there in front of her, right on the third row, was a little boy named George.

Ms Hart had watched George the year before and noticed he was seldom engaged in school games, that he always wore torn dusty clothes and that he constantly needed a bath. As a whole, George was unpleasant.

When Ms Hart was required to review each child’s records, she put George’s off until last. But his file turned out a surprise. His first-grade teacher wrote, “George is a bright child with a ready augh. He is a joy to be around.”

Another teacher wrote, “George is an excellent student well-liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a serious illness and life at home must be a struggle.” The next wrote. “George continues to work hard but his mother’s death has been hard on him. Since his father doesn’t show much interest, his home life will soon, affect him if some steps aren’t taken.”

The last record wrote, “George is silent and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. He could become a problem.”

By now Ms Hart realized the problem and Christmas was coming fast. Her children brought her presents, all in beautiful ribbon and bright paper, except for George’s, which was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper of a scissored grocery bag. Ms Hart took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a toy bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. She stopped the children’s laughter when she declared how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and wearing some of the perfume behind the other wrist.

George stayed behind just long enough to say, “Ms Hart, today you smelled just like my mom used to.”

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After George left, Ms Hart decided to care for him like a mother.
