二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The first letter arrived dated March 31, 2020. It was from a close childhood friend, with whom I regularly keep in touch via those correspondence (通信) methods such as instant texts, FaceTimes and phone calls, as most young people do.

“The sun has set on our 15th day of quarantine (隔离),” my friend wrote, “Isn’t it crazy how quickly this has become the new normal?” Plus, he said, writing a letter could be a fun creative exercise to break up the boredom of those days. So I wrote back.

When I was in fifth grade, we had a pen-pal program with a class in Australia, but when the school year ended, my pal and I fell out of touch. Anytime I traveled afar, I tried to write to my family; somehow I always tended to get home before my letters did.

But at this particular moment, I’ve found it wonderful to write letters in the simplest way. In return, I’ll get something far more interesting than an ordinary account of my own days: a patchwork of pages that were sent to me by others, each one fresher than the last one.

A recent article reported a rise in snail mail and handwritten messages; the practice seems to be popular as people deal with sadness from the pandemic (流行病). More likely, it’s because we’re missing our friends and classmates; we’re so badly aching for the simple physical connections that the virus has taken away.

“When I got your letter, the first thing I wanted to do was to text you, but I quickly controlled myself,” another childhood friend wrote. “What an affront to text the person who writes to you.” I smiled as I pulled out a blank sheet to start my response. I like to think I’ll keep this up for as long as I can, or at least as long as someone is willing to write back.

【1】What did the author’s friend write in the letter according to paragraph 2?

    A.The boring life in quarantine.

    B.The need of social distancing.

C.The desire for a new normal life.

D.The way of doing creative exercise.

【2】What does the author want to prove through his past writing experience?

A.His regret to lose touch with his pal.

B.His less communication by letter now.

C.His preference to travel to a distant place.

D.His concern about his family even in trips.

【3】Why is the author in favor of writing letters?

A.It can help prevent viruses spreading.

B.Snail mail is a popular way to contact.

C.People can find comfort from it.

    D.Physical connections can be avoided.

【4】What does the underlined word “affront” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Dishonesty.

    B.Impossibility.

    C.Disagreement.

    D.Impoliteness.

  • 23、   The amount of plastic pollution in the oceans is rapidly increasing. This is problematic, as at least 700 species of sea animals may mistake it for a tasty snack. While we know that some species seem to eat plastic because it looks like jellyfish or some other food source, less research has been carried out into what plastic smells like to marine animals.

But now, a study from the University of North Carolina has found that the coating of algae that naturally builds up on ocean plastics causes the rubbish to give off the scent of food.

The researchers took 15 loggerhead turtles, each around five months old, and placed them in a laboratory tank. They then piped in clean water, clean plastic, turtle food, and plastic that had been immersed in the marine environment for five weeks.

The turtles showed no reaction to the smell of clean water or clean plastic. But when they were exposed to the smell of ocean-soaked plastic 'or turtle food, they exhibited food-seeking behaviors like reaching their noses out of the water or showing increasing activities.

“This finding is the first demonstration that the smell of ocean plastics causes animals to eat them,” said Dr. Kenneth J Lohmann, who took part in the study. "It's common to find loggerhead turtles with their digestive systems fully or partially blocked because they've eaten plastic materials. There are also increasing reports of sea turtles that have become ill and stranded on the beach due to their ingestion of plastic."

According to the researchers, areas of the ocean with dense concentrations of plastic may trick turtles and other animals into thinking that there is an abundant food source. "Once these plastics are in the ocean, we don't have a good way to remove them or prevent them from smelling like food," said Lohmann.

【1】Why is plastic pollution posing a threat to marine animals?

A.It may eat up all jellyfish.

B.It may mislead them as food.

C.It may kill them with its smell.

D.It may trap 700 species of sea animals.

【2】What may attract the loggerhead turtles in the laboratory tank to search for food?

    A.Sea water

    B.Clear water

    C.Brand-new plastic

    D.Sea-soaked plastic

【3】What can be inferred from Lohmann's words in the last paragraph?

A.Turtles should be trained to be more intelligent.

B.Plastics should be kept from getting into the ocean at all.

C.An abundant food source should be offered to sea animals.

D.Researchers should come up with a solution to the current problem.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Ways Found to Remove Plastics

B.Loggerhead Turtles Faced with Food Shortage

    C.Ocean Plastics- Trick or Treat?

    D.Plastic Pollution- Compromise or Control?

  • 24、We’ve all been in a position where life gets busy, schedules are difficult to coordinate and connecting with friends feels harder than ever. With some friendships, we may lose touch and want to reconnect. However, the more time that passes, the more uncertain it can feel if they want to hear from us.

A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says it’s time to reach out. Researchers found numerous benefits when reaching out to friends and old acquaintances. Especially if you’re unsure of how well they’ll receive hearing from you. The study, led by Dr Peggy Liu, is called The Surprise of Reaching Out: Appreciated More Than We Think. In the study, researchers posed the question: Do people accurately understand how much other people value being reached out to by someone in their social circle? To answer this question, researchers carried out 13 experiments with more than 5,900 participants. In the experiments, researchers measured how much people estimated their friends or acquaintances would appreciate them reaching out versus how much those on the receiving end did appreciate it. They also examined different forms of communication-phone calls, texts, emails, notes or even small gifts—and their impact.

Over the series of experiments, experts discovered a similar trend: those reaching out significantly underestimated how much their friends would appreciate hearing from them. Plus, the more unexpected the communication was, the more the friend on the receiving end appreciated it. “People are fundamentally social beings and enjoy connecting with others,” the researchers wrote.

In fact, what made these moments of reaching out so impactful was the effort they showed—no matter the form of communication. Dr Amie Gordon, a social psychologist at the University of Michigan, emphasises the importance of small moments and making efforts in relationships in a Psychology Today article. “In a busy life, these little moments might feel just like that—little moments that don’t really matter ... But each moment we ignore is a missed opportunity to connect and build up an emotional bank of positive moments.”

The science is clear—people appreciate the effort we put into our friendships. And we greatly underestimate it. One phenomenon that may explain why those who reached out underestimated their positive impact is because of “the liking gap”. Psychologist Terri Apter writes in Psychology Today that the liking gap is a tendency to “how we often underestimate other’s responses to us”, and the reality that other people like us more than we may think.

  • 25、Open Offices Can Lead to Closed Minds

“Loneliness is a crowded room,” as Bryan Ferry of the band Roxy Music once sang, adding that everyone was “all together, all alone.” The open-plan office might have been designed to make his point. That is not the reason for the layout, of course. The supposed aim of open-plan offices is to ensure that workers will have more ____ with their colleagues, and that the resulting ____ will lead to greater productivity.

Ethan Bernstein and Stephen Turban, two Harvard Business School academics, set out to test this proposition. The authors surveyed interactions between colleagues in two unnamed multinational companies which had ____ open-plan offices. They did so by recruiting workers to wear different devices to detect, record, and monitor their interactions, body movement, and their location.

At the first company, the authors found that face-to-face interactions were more than three times higher in the old, cubicle (小隔间)-based office than in an open-plan space where employees have clear lines of sight to each other. ____, the number of e-mails people sent to each other ____ by 56% when they switched to open-plan. In the second company, face-to-face interactions decreased by a third after the switch to open-plan, whereas ____ traffic increased by between 22% and 50%.

Why did this shift occur? The authors suggest that employees value their ____ and find new ways to ____ it in an open-plan office. They shut themselves off by wearing large headphones to keep out the ____ caused by nearby colleagues. Indeed, those who _____ open-plan offices seem to have forgotten the importance of being able to concentrate on your work.

____ also find other ways of communicating with their fellow workers. Rather than have a chat in front of a large audience, employees simply send an e-mail; the result (as measured at one of the two companies surveyed) was that ____ declined.

Cubicles do not offer a great work environment either; they are still noisy and cut off employees from natural light. But at least workers have more of a chance to give their work area a(n) ____ touch. Allowing plenty of room for pictures of children, office plants, novelty coffee mugs — these are ways of making people feel more relaxed and happy in their jobs.

However, an open-plan office is a clear ____ to low-level office workers that they are seen as disposable cogs in a machine. Combine this with the lack of privacy and the office becomes a(n) ____ place to work. Workers could stay at home but that negates the intended benefits of collaboration that open-plan offices bring.
