二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The summer before my 10th birthday my father and mother moved our family of nine children to a farm! We had always lived in a small city, in the house my dad bought from my grandparents. But he wanted fresh air, healthy food and lots of room for his children to play. He'd worked multiple jobs at a time and saved for many years…and could finally afford a place in the countryside. Now a minor concern: the house had no running water or electricity. But there were 150 acres to run around in, walk through the woods in, swim a stream in, and otherwise yell, sing and laugh in every day!

That first year my dad put in electricity, because my mom simply announced, “I won't have kerosene lamps with children running around!” Indoor plumbing had to wait another year(an outhouse came with the property). Different friends, who my dad knew from work, asked if he'd take their large dogs who couldn't run free in the city. So we all now played with a big orange-brown boxer and a sporty German Shorthaired Pointer, who we simply named Billy and Molly. Absolutely all our clothes were hand-me-downs, bananas and oranges were “exotic” fruit that we'd see at holidays, and there was ONE birthday party a year! We'd take turns once every 10 years a child would have his/ her own party!

We thought we were rich. My mother was always singing, yelling hugging, or praying. And she told us we were blessed with plenty! To this day, each of my brothers and sisters remember those years as an abundance of chores, laughter, arguing, making peace, and playing together! Every challenge was a game aimed to outwit, and any failure was chance to learn. Money was so scarce, but joy was everywhere.

【1】Why did the author's family move to a farm?

A.They had to work on the 150-acre farm.

B.They couldn't afford the house in the city.

D.They believed living there was beneficial to them.

【2】What can we learn about friends mentioned in paragraph 2?

    A.Their life was more comfortable.

B.Their house was short of space.

C.Their dogs are quieter than the author's.

D.They greatly envied the author’s father.

【3】What does the underlined word "outwit" in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Prepare.

    B.Win.

    C.Manage.

    D.Avoid.

【4】Which words can best describe the author's life on the farm?

    A.Simple but happy.

    B.Wealthy and cheerful.

    C.Poor and misery.

    D.Rich but disappointed.

  • 22、Overpopulation is a big problem in every region of the world today. 【1】 Earth’s population is about 6.5 billion people. This number is growing every day. Despite improvements in birth control, in just 50 years, the population will be almost 9 billion.

Many people worry that the Earth won’t have enough resources to support so many people. One major reason for this is that wasting resources and polluting have become habitual behaviors. Industrial output results in polluting the air with dangerous fumes. 【2】 It’s possible that the Earth may become so damaged that it cannot support a large population of humans.

【3】 Even today, many people feed on mere scraps of food and little water. In 50 years, many experts worry that huge numbers of people will starve to death.

People are realizing they can no longer justify their wasteful behavior or put off action to fix it. Many car companies already have patents (专利) for very efficient cars. 【4】 A conversion to clean cars means that petrol can be saved for the future. In addition, the environmental sectors of many governments are setting strict rules for industries that pollute too much. If companies do not keep these standards, they are penalized with higher taxes.

Food is also an issue that is being tackled. Many countries are now approving of the point of view that immediate action is needed. They are determining ways to export goods to people in need, so that no one goes hungry. 【5】 And these ideas will help to support the growing population.

A.Another issue is the lack of useful land for cultivating crops.

B.In some cases, their operations might be suspended altogether.

C.Such cars waste no resources and produce no pollution.

D.Experts will continue to come up with ideas for the future.

E.Too many people are packed into cities and towns around the globe.

F.Also, cars and machines waste important natural resources like oil and water.

G.So, what is being done to prepare for the future?

  • 23、   In industry and medicine, robots routinely build, break down and inspect things; they also assist in surgery and pharmacies. Neither they nor “social” robots-which are designed to engage with people and to establish an emotional connection-behave like The Jetsons’ maid, Rosie, or other beloved robots of fiction. Even so, expect social robots to become more complicated and popular in the next few years.

Like most robots, social robots use artificial intelligence (AI) to decide how to act on information received through cameras and other sensors. The ability to respond in ways that seem lifelike has been informed by research into such issues as how perceptions (认知) form, what constitutes social and emotional intelligence, and how people understand others’ thoughts and feelings. Advances in AI have enabled designers to translate such psychological and neuroscientific (神经学的) insights into algorithms (演算) that allow robots to recognize voices, faces and emotions; interpret speech and gestures; respond appropriately to complex verbal and nonverbal cues; make eye contact; speak conversationally; and adapt to people’s needs by learning from feedback, rewards and criticisms.

In consequence, social robots are filling an ever expanding variety of roles. A 47-inch humanoid called Pepper (from SoftBank Robotics), for instance, recognizes faces and basic human emotions and engages in conversations via a touch screen in its “chest.” About 15,000 Peppers worldwide perform such services as hotel check-ins, airport customer service, shopping assistance and fast-food checkout. Social robots have particular appeal for assisting the world’s growing elderly population. Japan’s PARO Therapeutic (治疗的) Robot, which looks like a lovely seal (海豹), is meant to stimulate and reduce stress for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other patients. Mabu (Catalia Health) engages patients, particularly the elderly, reminding them to take walks and medication. Social robots are also gaining popularity with consumers as toys. Early attempts to incorporate social behavior in toys, such as Hasbro’s Baby Alive and Sony’s AIBO robotic dog, had limited success. But both are resurging, and the most recent version of AIBO has complicated voice and gesture recognition, can be taught tricks and develops new behaviors based on previous interactions.

Worldwide sales of consumer robots reached an estimated $5.6 billion in 2018, and the market is expected to grow to $19 billion by the end of 2025. This trend may seem surprising given that multiple well-funded consumer robot companies, such as Jibo and Anki, have failed. But a wave of robots is lining up to take the place of defunct robots, including BUDDY (Blue Frog Robotics), a big-eyed mobile device that plays games in addition to acting as a personal assistant and providing home automation and security.

    1Paragraph 2 mainly tells us ________.

A.what the features of social robots are

B.what promotes social robots’ engagement with people

C.how algorithms are improved to adapt to people’s needs

D.how psychological and neuroscientific insights are translated

    2According to Paragraph 3, social robots ________.

A.have a wide range of applications

B.have the ability to deal with emergencies

C.have a tendency to take the place of humans

    D.have successfully gained psychological insight

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Social robots are designed as personal assistants.

B.Robots in industry and medicine need improvement.

C.Consumer robots have been successful all these years.

D.Social robots are popular due to great interactive abilities.

4What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To predict the prospect of social robots.

B.To introduce the advances of social robots.

C.To report the application of AI in social robots.

D.To show the influence of social robots on our life.

  • 24、During these past few days I have been reflecting a lot on everything that happened this past year and thinking of what I can do differently so that the coming year will be much better! Here I want to share some tips so you can also do your resolution and you can achieve them all!

·Be realistic: You should always try to reach for the skies with your goals, but things like “I want to win the lottery(彩票)” or “I want to lose 80 pounds in 1 month” are things you shouldn’t have on your list because they will only become frustrations.

·Be detailed: It’s a lot easier to accomplish more specific plans than general ones. Instead of writing “I want to lose weight,” put things like “I will start my Yes You Can! Diet Plan the first Monday of the year” or “I will start a movement routine 3 times a week for 35 minutes.” When we put down concrete activities, we commit ourselves to them and it becomes a lot harder to come up with excuses.

·Think of alternatives: At the beginning of this past year, you put that you were going to start going to the gym as one of your annual plans. During the whole year you intended to take action but you always said that you couldn’t because you came home so tired from work. If this is one of your plans for this year, you should write down how you’re going to achieve it. For example, “I will start going to the gym in the mornings, before work.” That way you prevent what stopped you from achieving your goal last year.

·Focus on goals which depend on YOU: It is very important that all of your plans are for YOU to accomplish, and it is important that you write them down that way. If one of your goals this coming year is to improve a relationship with one of your family members, make sure that you clearly put down what you are going to do for this to succeed. For example, “I will call my sister at least three times a week and I will visit her in the middle of the year.”

Well, I hope that you use these tips so that this year you will accomplish everything you want, and make it the best year ever! Thank you for being with me during everything this past year, and I hope that you keep showing me all of this love and support during the next. Happy new year!

【1】 Why isn’t “I want to win the lottery” recommended as a New Year plan?

    A. Because it is very likely to fail.

    B. Because it is too easy to realize.

    C. Because it is not big enough as a goal.

    D. Because it is not easier than losing weight.

【2】 The underlined word commit in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by the word_______.

    A. devote B. determine C. adjust D. force

【3】When you failed to accomplish your plan last year, you’re advised to ______.

    A. take action instead of writing it down

    B. give up the same plan this year

    C. put down the way to realize it

    D. stop making any plans

【4】According to the passage, which of the following is the best plan?

    A. I will become a millionaire in one month.

    B. I want to be the champion of the marathon.

    C. I will change all of my bad habits in one week.

    D. I will go for a walk after supper in working days.
