二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Tyler and I stopped by our corner store. A few police cars caught Tyler's attention. 'Mom, can I use my allowance money and buy the policemen some doughnuts to say 'thank you'? ' he asked.

'Certainly! ' I said, feeling proud that I was achieving my aim to raise my children to be grateful, tender-hearted and caring.

After we left the store, Tyler asked a question that would change our lives and the lives of countless others forever.

'Why were the police so happy about the doughnuts? '

I explained some people are not always friendly to police officers. Tyler was very sad to hear this, and instead of shrugging it off, he said that he was going to thank every cop in America and buy them each a doughnut!

I was shocked, but it never occurred to me to say 'no'. In fact, I thought it was an excellent but unachievable idea. I suggested many other options, but nothing was enough for him on the new found mission (使命)

I didn't know how to put this passion into action, but I knew one thing: Tyler had found his purpose, and it was my duty to help him. I e-mailed our local police office and asked if Tyler could host a thank-you event for them. They were delighted. At the event, they called Tyler 'The Donut Boy', a name that has become known throughout the nation.

Then we kept planning thank- you events and many caring people joined. We were invited to TV stations, and flew to Washington, D.C. for National Police Week. It has been three years since a simple act of kindness sparked a wonderful idea in an eight-year-old boy.

In forty-eight states, more than 90,000 doughnuts have been delivered so far, with no end in sight. We've made memories that will last a lifetime, but most importantly, we have served those who serve us daily and made our mark on this world.

1What quality of Tyler made the author feel proud?

    A.Independence. B.Honesty.

    C.Kindness. D.Cautiousness.

2How did the author react to Tyler's wish to thank all the police at first?

A.She praised him for his ambition. B.She told him it was impossible.

C.She expressed her doubt about it. D.She tried to change his idea.

3Which of the following is true according to the text?

A.Tyler got the idea of buying the policemen doughnuts from the author.

B.The policemen were confused about Tyler's behavior.

    C.Tyler has achieved his mission.

D.More people joined Tyler in doing Thank-you events.

4What is the author trying to tell us?

A.A grateful heart can make a difference. B.Curiosity is the key to children growth.

C.It's never too old to learn. D.It's better to be famous at an early age.

  • 22、To the delight of bookworms, anyone who has ever told you burying your head in a book means you’re being unsociable will have to cat their wards. A new study suggests those who regularly read, especially fiction, are actually nicer and more empathetic (善解人意) people.

The study, carried out by Kingston University London, and presented at the British Psychological Society conference in Brighton, UK, last week, also found that those who just watched television seemed to be less kind and understanding of other people.

For the study, the researchers questioned 123 people on their preferences for books, TV shows, and plays. They were also quizzed about the type of entertainment they preferred from comedy or romance to drama. Then they were tested on their interpersonal skills. The researchers asked them about their behavior towards others, whether they understood and respected others’ points of view, and whether they actively helped other people.

Drawing on these responses sheet, the researchers found some mind-boggling results. They discovered that those who read more showed greater positive social behavior and a better ability to empathize with others, while those who preferred watching TV didn’t show the same ability to empathize and were more likely to show unsociable behavior.

They also found the forms of fiction people preferred were linked to their interpersonal skills and behavior. Those who preferred fiction displayed the most positive social skills. Romance and drama lovers showed the ability to see others’ points of view, while comedy fans were particularly, able to relate to others the most.

The researchers concluded that those who read fiction regularly are more well-adapted to see things from other people’s points of view, which makes them better at understanding people. However, they do acknowledge that their study didn’t conclude if the effects are causal — does reading make you nicer and more empathetic, or do more empathetic people tend to read fiction? Even so, picking up a book can’t hurt, and might just make the world a nicer place.

【1】How did the researchers conduct the research?

    A.By making questionnaire surveys.

    B.By comparing experiment statistics.

    C.By observing participants’ behaviors.

D.By referring to previous study reports.

【2】What does the underlined word “mind-boggling” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Embarrassing.

    B.Satisfying.

    C.Amazing.

    D.Disappointing.

【3】What can improve people’s empathetic abilities the most according to the study?

    A.Reading fiction and comedy.

    B.Enjoying romance and drama.

    C.Taking part in social activities.

    D.Watching plays on social media.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.All people support the research result.

B.Further study is needed on this subject.

C.The nicer and kinder people like reading.

D.Reading can help people make more friends.

  • 23、A beloved pet that went missing in the Highlands area of Vancouver Island was found seven days later by an army of volunteers and was reunited with her owner.

The mastiff-retriever cross (马士提夫獒犬), named Luna, was found trapped on a narrow cliff ledge (岩架), and was reunited with her owner after a heroic rescue last month. It’s believed that Luna had chased an animal out of her yard and got lost, somehow falling off a cliff and landing on a two-foot-wide ledge. She remained there, alone, as her owner and searchers wildly looked for her.

“It was terrible because it was getting colder and she always sleeps next to me or my daughter,” said Saryta Schaefer, Luna’s owner.

After she’d been missing for several days, there was a break in the case. Across the water, Ron Cheeke had heard Luna’s cries for help. Cheeke decided to record the sound and notify the pet rescue group ROAM. He even went so far as to search the area in a boat to try to locate the exact source of the sound. “I used a pot, and every time I banged on the pot, the dog barked back,” Cheeke told CTV News.

Eventually, after searching on both water and land, a team found the scared dog and used a harness (保护带) to pull her back to safety and to her owner. “I almost fell over when I saw her-it was quite exciting,” said Schaerer.

Cheeke said his own dog had died recently and he was motivated to help. “I lost my dog last year, so it was good,” said Cheeke. “It’s good to see it back with its owners."

“There’s no feeling like it. When you’re involved with this and you get the owner back with the pet, it’s worth all the money in the world,” added ROAM volunteer Andy Carswell.

【1】Which of the following happened to Luna first?

A.Luna was found stuck on a narrow spot.

B.Luna fell off a cliff and remained there.

C.Luna’s owner tried to find her back.

D.Luna ran after an animal and went missing.

【2】Why did Cheeke keep knocking on the pot?

A.To be sure where the cry came from.

B.To draw attention to the passers-by.

C.To encourage Luna to cry for help.

D.To remind volunteers of the cries.

【3】What can we infer from Cheeke’s word in Paragraph 6?

    A.He was determined.

    B.He was adaptable.

    C.He was sympathetic.

    D.He was cooperative.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Volunteers Praised for Saving a Dog

B.A Missing Dog Reunited with Owner

C.A Dog Cried Tears of Joy When Found

D.A Seven-day Rescue Ended in Peace

  • 24、   Is there a single word that motivates us more than “weekend”? It's like the promise of a sweet hereafter following what seems like a lifetime of toil (劳累). It's the spring in our step that gets bouncier with each passing day - until by Friday, we're practically bumping our heads against the ceiling.

The trouble is that the weekend is a rip-off. You think you're getting 48 hours of unconditional downtime, but reality takes a discount. In fact, it takes most of Sunday. That's when anxiety comes creeping in and another countdown begins: 12 hours until Monday. Sure, weekend is free time. But the mounting stress of an incoming Monday can erase any joy you might get from a Sunday evening.

That feeling is so common among the Monday-to-Friday crowd, there's even more than one name for it: the Sunday Scaries, or Sunday Fear Syndrome. Going from a countdown to the weekend to a countdown to Monday can be difficult. Even Monster.com - a website that specializes in yoking humans to the Monday-to-Friday cycle -admits it's a problem. In a survey, Monster found that 76% of Americans have “really bad” Sunday night blues.

For most people, Sunday is no holiday at all. It may all come down to the same problem: We can't stop thinking about tomorrow. Even worse, we may develop some downright unhealthy coping strategies for that transition from weekends to Monday. Some might resist - staying up late, milking every minute of a fleeting Sunday in the form of mind-numbing distractions.

But why should Monday cast such a long and fearful shadow on our lives? Maybe it's because the counter is reset, and the weekend, or happiness, seems at its furthest point. If, like most of us, you have a tolerable job, but don't much like the whole idea of working, there are plenty of ways to make Mondays a little less stressful. Most importantly, don't leave any unsettled Friday business hanging over the weekend. So, clear the decks and tie up loose ends.

【1】What do we know about weekend in paragraph2?

    A.It is hard-earned.

B.It doesn't bring joy as expected.

    C.It adds to people's anxiety.

D.It provides good time to relax.

【2】Why does the writer mention Monster.com in the text?

    A.To support his idea.

    B.To clarify a question.

    C.To show its popularity.

    D.To provide more information.

【3】What does the writer think of the way most people spend the weekend?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Conservative.

    C.Practical.

    D.Unwise.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Why Monday Takes a Bite Out of Sunday

B.Why People Are Stressed Out on Fridays

C.Why a Countdown to the Weekend Is Difficult

D.Why Monday Casts a Fearful Shadow on Our Lives

“This boy’s name is Mark, ” Ms. Green announced. “He comes from another school, and he’s going to be in our class from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly. ”
