21、Growing up, I understood one thing about my dad: He knew everything. This was our relationship, in sum: I asked him questions and he told me the answers. When I moved out on my own, I called him at least once a week, usually when something broke in my apartment and I needed to know how to fix it: the toilet, the air-conditioning…
But then, eventually, I needed him less. I got married, and my husband had most of the knowledge I lacked about water heaters and nondestructive insect removal. For everything else, we had the Internet. I don’t know when it happened, but our conversations when I called declined to six words. Me: “Hi, Dad.” Him: “Hi, sweets. Here’s Mom.” I loved my dad, of course, but I wondered at times if maybe he had already shared everything I needed to know.
Then, this past summer, my husband, our four kids, and I moved in with my parents for three weeks while our house was being repaired. They own a lake house, and Dad asked me to help him rebuild the bulkhead at their dock (码头的舱壁). It was hard labor. But as we put the new bulkhead together piece by piece, my dad knowing exactly what went where, I looked at him. “How do you know how to build a bulkhead?”
The heavy mallet (木槌) he was swinging paused in midair. “I spent a summer in college building them on the Jersey Shore.” “You did?” I thought I knew everything about my dad—all his random jobs. I knew about the apple farm, the summer at the hot sauce manufacturing plant, and even the diner line-cook position, where he learned how to make the best omelet in the world. But I never knew this.
“Yep. Now let me teach you how to use this saw.”
As he explained the importance of not bending too low, I realized that maybe it’s not that there’s nothing left to say. Maybe it’s just that I’ve spent my life asking him the wrong questions.
A few weeks later, after my family and I moved back into our renovated house, I called my parents. Dad answered. “Hi, sweets,” he said. “Here’s Mom.” “Wait, Dad,” I said. “How are you?” We ended up talking about the consulting job he was working on, a new battery he’d bought for his sailboat, a refinance my husband and I were looking into to relieve our home loan. Nothing life-changing. To anyone else, it would sound like a normal conversation between a dad and his daughter.
But to me, it was novel. A new beginning. I spent the first part of my life needing to talk to my dad. Now I talk to him because I want to.

23、 Have you ever sat down in a restaurant and felt instantly drawn to a particular dish on the menu? The reason might be something as simple as that you love the dish's main ingredient, but it's often more than that.
Scientists are finding that the way food is presented can make a big difference. In one study, for example, party guests were given a glass of a drink called mango lassi. Half the guests were told the lassi was healthy. The rest were told it was unhealthy. Those who had the “healthy” drink considered it 55% less enjoyable than those who drank the “unhealthy” one, though the drinks were exactly the same.
People's choices around what to eat are influenced by lots of small factors unconsciously. But we can make those choices more conscious by arming ourselves with information.
Agriculture accounts for about 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions (排放) warming the planet. But not all foods have equal influences. Globally, the production of animal-based foods accounts for about two-thirds of agricultural emissions, while plant-based foods generally have lower environmental influences.
Increasing the share of plant-based foods in our diets is therefore a key step in reducing agriculture's pressure on climate. That doesn't mean giving up meat, though. We can eat less animal-based food and more plants.
By examining how food decisions are made, scientists have learned that simple pushes can change people's behavior in big ways. Restaurants, hotels, universities, and even cities have begun applying the latest behavioral science to help consumers cut their carbon footprint by choosing more sustainable (可持续的) foods. Burger King began a trial of the plant-based Impossible Burger. At Seattle Pacific University, campus food service provider Sodexo doubled the size of its plant-rich food station.

A.They are harmful to the environment.
B.They are the main reason for climate change.
C.They provide more nutrients than plant-based foods.
D.They are less consumed compared to plant-based foods.
【3】What does the author suggest people do?
A.Pay attention to how food is cooked.
B.Choose healthy foods to live a longer life.
C.Consider climate change when deciding what to eat.
D.Give up meat to reduce pressure on the environment.
【4】What does the last paragraph focus on?
A.Burger King's new plant-based burgers.

24、 As cars have gotten fancier, tiny computers, called microprocessors — commonly known as chips(芯片) — have been added to control many different parts of a car. Modern cars may have as many as 150 microprocessors.
Last year, many car makers had to close their factories because of COVID-19. Since they weren’t making cars, they canceled many of their orders with chip makers, which forced the companies that make microprocessors to stop making so many chips for cars. They began selling lots of chips to other kinds of companies. For example, during the lockdown many people bought computers and video game systems to help pass the time while they were stuck at home. This meant that companies which made computers and video game systems needed a lot of chips for their products. So now demand for new vehicles has returned, but there aren’t enough microprocessors.
One company that studies the car business says that the chip shortage has already caused car makers to produce 500,000 fewer cars. The company expects that number to drop by 300,000 more cars this year. Ford stopped making cars at its Kentucky factory in December, and has slowed up work at a factory in Germany. General Motors has decided to make fewer cars at its factories in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. Honda and Nissan have stopped making cars at some of their factories. However, the problem has not affected the entire auto industry equally. Toyota says it diversified its supply chain and stored a huge number of components after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. And Hyundai didn’t cancel any of its chip orders in 2020 due to COVID-19, so it is almost not affected. But the hit to the industry has been reported at $61 billion.
Another reason for the shortage is that there just aren’t many companies that make chips. Most of the large chip-making companies are in China.
Most experts think the bottleneck is expected to last for months.
【1】Why does the author mention computers and video game systems in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain why car makers lack chips.
B.To show they can help people kill time.
C.To warn they’ll do harm to car making.
D.To prove how important chips are to cars.
【2】What can be inferred about Toyota?
A.It produced new types of cars.
B.It cancelled many chip orders.
C.It prepared for supply chain failures.
D.It united Hyundai for chip shortage.
【3】What is the author’s attitude to the present chip supply?
A.Anxious.
B.Objective.
C.Tolerant.
D.Conservative.
【4】What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Automakers Promote Chip Production
B.Chip Shortage Becomes Common
C.Chip Development Is on the Way
D.Chip Shortage Hurts Car Makers
