  • 21、How to Make Plays More Approachable?

Plays on the page can often feel incomprehensible, academic or irrelevant to the young people studying them, but they shouldn’t be. 【1】

The best way to explore a play is to experience it — either through watching it or performing it yourself. The students can imagine a character or a scene, having them come off stage. 【2】

There are lots of recordings of theatre productions available to stream for free in your classroom covering many set texts and introducing new, bold and challenging plays. 【3】 It’s easy to jump to specific scenes or speeches, or even compare the interpretations and creative decisions of different productions.

If your classroom space allows, push back your tables and get everyone on their feet. When students find it too challenging to read the text of a scene and act it out without practicing, ask them to read it carefully first. 【4】 They can mine the original text for clues, making lists of facts and questions regarding particular characters and situations.

【5】 Think about the various ways in which stagecraft (编剧技术) can transform words on a page into a piece of theatre.

Ask students to explore a character through costume design, or consider how lighting can enhance mood and aid storytelling. Ask students “Why does it matter?” and “What’s the point?”— get them to think about how the play relates to them, and encourage them to express their opinions on it.

A.You might also like to ask them to write a missing scene.

B.In this way, they will remember much more about them.

C.This might help them to ignore the author’s background.

D.And then perform a version of the scene in their own words.

E.If getting on your feet isn’t an option, get creative on paper instead.

F.Time-poor teachers needn’t commit to watching an entire production.

G.Bringing them to life through performance can make them fun, accessible and relatable.

  • 22、The term “seal” is often used to refer to both seals and sea lions, but there are several characteristics that set seals and sea lions apart.

Seals and sea lions are both in the order Carnivora and suborder Pinnipedia, thus they are called “pinnipeds.” Pinnipeds are mammals that are well-adapted for swimming. They usually have a streamlined barrel shape (桶形) and four flippers at the end of each limb (四肢). They also give birth to live young and nurse their young. Pinnipeds are protected by a thick layer of fat under their skin and fur to keep them warm in water. There are three families of pinnipeds: the Phocidae, the earless or true seals; the Otariidae, the eared seals, and the Odobenidae, the walruses.

Characteristics of Phocidae (Earless or True Seals)

Earless seals have no visible ear flaps, although they still have ears, which may be visible as a dark spot or small hole on the side of their head.

    “True” seals:

    Have no external ear flaps.

Swim with their hind flippers. Their hind flippers always face backward and are furred.

Have front flippers that are short, furry and thick in appearance.

Can be found in both marine and freshwater environments.

Characteristics of Otariidae (Eared Seals, Including Fur Seals and Sea Lions)

One of the most noticeable features of eared seals is their ears, but they also move around differently than true seals.

    Eared seals:

    Have external ear flaps.

Are only found in marine environments.

Swim with their front flippers. Unlike earless seals, their hind flippers can turn forward, and they are able to walk, and even run, on their flippers. The seals you may see performing at marine parks are often sea lions.

May gather in larger groups than true seals. Sea lions are much more vocal than true seals, and make a variety of loud, barking noises.

    Characteristics of Walruses

Wondering about walruses, and how they differ from seals and sea lions? Walruses are pinnipeds, but they are in the family, Odobenidae. One obvious difference between walruses, seals and sea lions is that walruses are the only pinnipeds with tusks—a pair of long pointed teeth. These tusks are present in both males and females.

Other than tusks, walruses have some similarities to both seals and sea lions. Like true seals, walruses don’t have visible ear flaps. But, like eared seals, walruses can walk on their flippers by rotating their hind flippers under their body.

【1】According to the passage, which of the following statements about pinnipeds is true?

    A.Pinnipeds are good swimmers.

B.Pinnipeds are afraid of cold weather.

C.Pinnipeds are of the Phocidae family.

D.Seals and sea lions are pinnipeds, while walruses are not.

【2】One way to distinguish a sea lion and a true seal is that ________.

A.the sea lion cannot play ball

B.the true seal cannot hear well

C.the sea lion doesn’t have ear flaps

D.the true seal can’t walk with hind flippers

【3】Which of the following picture best illustrates a walrus?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 23、In Stark County, a group of high school students are working on a solution for a dangerous intersection(交叉路口). They’re in the process of developing technology to make the intersection of Mayfair and Wise roads safer.

At Green High School, while many students are home enjoying their spring break, one group of students are testing out a project they have been working on since October. In their STEM class, they were given the task of coming up with an idea that could be entered into the “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow” project.

“Samsung puts out some grant(助学金) money and they challenge students to bond with their community to solve problems for the betterment of the community,” said Green High School science teacher Christopher Kriebel.

The intersection the students chose looks like a normal intersection at first glance, but on closer inspection, there are multiple hills that cause blind spots, leaving only three or four seconds of notice if there’s a car coming in at 45 mph. That’s really dangerous. The students’ solution involves sensors that notice oncoming traffic from distances up to 12 or 13 meters, which then light up a sign.

Though the project started in class, the three students, Erich, Giuliana Ciccarelli-Aloisi and Alec Hemphill, took it on full-time in their science club after their STEM course ended. They spent hours outside of school working to perfect their idea and even getting the city involved, working with the mayor(市长) and engineers.

Now as they continue to work on their invention, these students are in disbelief at what they’ve created. They hope they’ll win the competition on April 5 when they are to submit their final video to Samsung explaining what they’ve done and what they hope to continue to do. The students will test the project at the intersection. If the students make it, they could end up in New York in the top 10.

【1】What are the group of students at Green High School doing?

A.They are brainstorming ideas for future society.

B.They are working to solve a problem for Samsung.

C.They are trying to find a solution to a traffic problem.

D.They are developing technology to be applied to their STEM class.

【2】Why is Christopher Kriebel’s words mentioned in paragraph 3?

A.To present the main idea of the text.

B.To support the author’s point of view.

    C.To provide some background information.

D.To give an example of the students’ commitment.

【3】Which of the following can best describe the group of students?

    A.Creative and devoted.

    B.Intelligent and brave.

    C.Cooperative and cautious.

    D.Generous and determined.

【4】What can be inferred about the students from the last paragraph?

A.They ended up among the top ten.

B.They are excited about their invention.

C.They are disappointed at the test result.

D.They won praise from the city officials.

  • 24、   Now come some money-saving ideas from a web forum (论坛), which may help you save a penny in the UK.

Nancy: Many people nowadays seem to buy clothes, wear then a couple of times and then give them to charity shops so that's where I do my shopping. You can pet some cheap but really good stuff and you know you’re your money is helping other people so it's a win-win situation in my opinion.

Ailsa: I'm a student and I have a part time job during term time and then work full-time during the holidays. You really can find some good bargains at the end of the day when a lot of food is reduced because it has reached its sell-by date (保质期). It's amazing how much you can save that way.

Gary: I must admit I don't think much about how or where I shop but I try to save money on electricity and gas in the house. Instead of turning up the temperature I put on another sweater and I close the doors. I encourage roommates to turn off the lights when they leave and we don't leave the TV or computer on standby (待机) as that uses up unnecessary energy.

Matthew: I've just moved to the UK. Someone told me about the "freecycle" scheme and I've managed to get almost everything without spending any money. Basically, you advertise what you don't need on its website for someone to collect it. No one makes any money so it really is a good exchange.

A.Using the student card for discounts. B.Buying things at lower prices.

C.Getting food from the charity. D.Saving money by earning

    A.In a charity shop. B.In a local supermarket.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的短文。

Last Sunday afternoon, Sandra and I were eager to meet up with a man on Detroit’s east side to help him get ready for a job interview this week. But on the way, we spotted a dog lying near the road next to his owner. We thought he’d been hit by a car. My friend, Sandra Abrahamian, and I had assisted animal rescue groups before and we thought there might be something we could do, so we quickly pulled over to help.

His owner, a woman told us the dog’s name is Bosco, and she was walking him over a mile in the heat to her new home. She said Bosco was an outside dog and no one would give him a ride to her new place. That’s when she and a friend decided to walk the entire way. He was going from a life on a chain in one backyard to another. She said Bosco was having trouble breathing along the way, but they thought he could make it. But just a block away from their destination, Bosco fell down. We could tell he was suffering from heatstroke (中暑). She told us he had thrown up and could no longer stand. Bosco was out of breath quickly; his drool (口水) was also thick. Bosco’s owner said she wanted to give him away because she didn’t have time for him. She said he would never be allowed into her new "home" because her children have allergies (过敏症) and she worried he would dirty the carpet.

I made a call to Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue to ask if they could help Bosco because it was clear that he was going to die without emergency care. To our happiness, Rinaldi said they could help. At once she told the people at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services that a dog which needed critical care was being rushed in and they must be ready to try their best to save him.
